  • This study aimed to identify the flowering and fruiting characteristics of 2 varieties (Chunpoong and Yunpoong), 3 superior lines (KG103, KG104, KG105) and Hwangsookjong selected for development of varieties of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. The flowering date of Yunpoong and KG103 line showed earlier than any other lines or variety. Fertility ratio of KG104 was higher than others and the lowest with KG103 showing over 60% in all varieties and lines tested. On the fruiting type of lines, ratio of single ovary type of Chunpoong and KG105 was higher than double ovary type while Yunpoong, KG104 and Hwangsookjong were formed more double ovary type. Seed yield of KG104 per stem was the highest but Yunpoong showed the highest per kan (90 ${\times}$ 180 cm). Seed size of KG103 was the biggest among the lines tested, meanwhile that of Chunpoong and Hwangsookjong were smaller.

  • To study the optimal cultivation for paddy soil, growth characteristics and ginsenoside content was investigated by both of poor drainage class (PDC) and imperfect drainage class (IDC) in three-year-old ginseng of varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS), and Jakyeongjong (JK). Root yield of IDC was higher than that of PDC by 3.6 times because stem length, leaf area, and chlorophyll contents were increased, while discolored leaf ratio was decreased. Root yield of HS in PDC was highest among four varieties because chlorophyll contents, leaf area, and survived plant ratio were relatively high. Root yield of CP in IDC was highest among four varieties because of high leaf area and survived plant ratio, and low discolored leaf ratio. Ratio of rusty-colored root showed significant difference by varieties, which was the highest in HS and the lowest in CP among four varieties irrespective of drainage classes. Total ginsenoside contents showed significant difference by drainage classes, which were high in IDC of good growth and low in PDC of poor growth. Total ginsenoside contents were high in JK and CP, while low in HS and YP both of drainage classes.

  • Root yield and quality of ginseng cultured in paddy soil was low relatively compared with that of upland soil because of moisture injury in root during rainy season. Drainage class in soils generally divided into 6 classes, and it is possible to cultivate ginseng practically in imperfectly drainage class (IDC). This study carried out to select the varieties that is suitable for paddy soil, which is easy to be generated rusty-colored root and physiological-discolored leaf. Experiment plot arranged with the condition of soil humidity contents such as poorly drainage class (PDC) and imperfectly drainage class (IDC), and upland soil. Growth characteristics and root yield were investigated in four-year-old ginseng of varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS), and Jakyeongjong (JK). CP among four varieties showed the highest yield in IDC and CP was the lowest ratio in leaf discoloration and rusty-colored root. HS was followed by CP in the order of root yield, but it had the weakness that the ratio of rusty-colored root was high respectively.

Effect of Variety and Shading Material on Growth Characteristics and Ginsenoside Contents of 2-Year-Old Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) Grown in Imperfectly Drained Paddy Soil (배수약간불량 논토양에서 품종 및 해가림 피복물 종류가 2년생 인삼의 생육과 진세노사이드 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • To selection of optimal shading material, two-year-old ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) of new cultivar, 'Cheonpoong' (CP), and native species 'Hwangsookjong' (HS) were cultured under three kinds of shading materials such as three-layered blue and a one-layered black PE (polyethylene) net (TBSB), blue PE sheet (BS), and aluminium coated PE sheet (AS) in imperfectly drained paddy soil. Growth characteristics, yield and ginsenoside contents were investigated under three shading materials. Yield and ginsenoside contents of ginseng were distinctly affected by intensity and quality of sunlight penetrated through shading materials. Light transmission ratio, air and soil temperature according to shading materials were higher in order of BS, AS, and TBSB. However, ratio of aerial phase and porosity of the soil were higher in order of AS, BS, and TBSB, respectively. There was no significantly difference in the ratio of rusty colored root by shading materials. CP showed higher stem length, leaf area, and root weight than that of HS, while the former showed distinctly lower discolored leaf ratio than that the other. Eight kinds of ginsenosides content of CP were higher than that of HS in $Rg_1$, Re, Rf, $Rb_1$ and Rc except $Rg_2$, $Rb_2$, and $Rb_3$. Total ginsenoside contents of CP was distinctly higher than that of HS. Total ginsenoside contents as affected by shading materials was higher in order of BS, TBSB, and AS in CP, while TBSB, BS, and AS in HS.

  • To select adoptable varieties in paddy soil with relatively high content of soil moisture, the growth characteristics and ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng was investigated in paddy soil with two types of drainage conditions such as poorly and imperfectly drained class, using 4 varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS) Jakyeongjong (JK). The ratio of survived plant in poor drainage conditions was higher than that in imperfect drainage conditions, and the ratio of discolored leaf in the former was lower than that in the latter. The ratio of survived plant was highest in HS, while lowest in YP. The ratio of discolored leaf was lowest in HS, while highest in YP among 4 varieties. Root weight per plant and yield were more distinctly decreased in poor drainage conditions than those in imperfect drainage conditions. Descending order of yield in poor drainage conditions was JK, CP, YP and HS, while CP, YP, JK and HS in imperfect drainage conditions. Varietal difference of rusty colored root was more distinct than that between poor and imperfect drainage conditions. The ratio of rusty colored root was relatively low in CP and JK, while high in YP and HS. Total ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng grown in poor drainage conditions was increased more than that in imperfect drainage conditions due to full growth of root. Regardless of different drainage conditions total ginsenoside content was highest in YP, while lowest in HS among 4 varieties, and there were no distinct difference between CP and JK.
