  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the characteristics and pollutant loadings of non-point pollutants that flowed in the streams on precipitation for pollutant loading reduction of Hwa-sung lake inflow streams. Although it has been made an effort to improve the water quality of Hwa-sung basin through the strategies for the preservation of water quality, it is shown that the water quality is not greatly improved. Because it has been industrialized and urbanized near Hwa-sung basin so that it is difficult to reduce the water pollution due to the increase in pollutant loadings of point and non-point sources. In this study, it is investigated the outflow characteristics of non-point pollutants that discharged with storm runoff and estimated the effect of runoff on Hwa-sung basin. The final goal of this study is to utilize the basic information for proper management and strategies of non-point sources on Hwa-sung basin. At the result of inflow streams, Ja-an stream that has the greatest pollutant loadings on precipitation is strongly influenced on the water quantity of Hwa-sung basin. On the other hand, it is shown that Nam-yang stream is strongly influenced on the SS concentration of Hwasung basin among them. Also, all streams; Nam-yang, Ja-ahn, Ah-eun stream; has the degree of slope more than or near 1 in the correlation results so that they have strong pollutant loading impact and the concentration of SS is the highest among other pollutants. So, specific studies on initial rain phenomena are more necessary to manage the pollutants economically. Also, the proper control of SS concentration is required to manage the effluent pollutants effectively on precipitation. So, it is necessary to consider the strategies for non-point pollutants as well as point pollutants when the new management is imposed to reduce the pollutant load for improvement of Hwa-sung basin.

  • Seasonal variation of biogeochemical characteristics was determined in Lake Shihwa from October 2002 to August 2003. When the lake was artificially constructed for the freshwater reservoir in 1988, the development of the strong haline density stratification resulted in two-layered system in water column and hypoxic/anoxic environment prevailed in the bottom layer due to oxidation of accumulated organic matters in the lake. Recently, seawater flux to the lake through the sluice has been increased to improve water quality in the lake since 2000, but seasonal stratification and hypoxic bottom layer of the lake still developed in the summer due to the nature of artificially enclosed lake system. As the lake is still receiving tremendous amount of organic matters and other pollutants from neighboring streams during the rainy summer season, limited seawater flux sluicing into the lake may not be enough for the physical and biogeochemical mass balance especially in the summer. The excess of accumulated organic matters in the bottom layer apparently exhausted dissolved oxygen and affected biogeochemical distributions and processes of organic and inorganic compounds in the stratified two-layered environment in the summer. During the summer, ammonia and dissolved organic carbon remarkably increased in the bottom layer due to the hypoxic/anoxic condition in the bottom layer. Phosphate also increased as the result of benthic flux from the bottom sediment. Meanwhile, dissolved organic carbon showed the highest value at the upstream area and decreased along the salinity gradient in the lake. In addition to the sources from the upstream, autochthonous origin of particulate organic carbon from algal bloom in the lake might be more important for sustaining aggravated water quality and development of deteriorated bottom environment in the summer. The removal of trace metals could be attributed to scavenging by strong insoluble metal-sulfide compounds in the hypoxic/anoxic bottom layer in the summer.

  • Physiochemical factors, phytoplankton biomass (Chl ${\alpha}$) and primary productivity were investigated seasonally in the three lakes of Dongbok, Juam, and Yeongsan during April 2004${\sim}$March 2006. Microphytoplankton dominated (>60%) in Dongbok lake, and phytoplankton biomass was high in the upper area, especially during April 2004, whereas they were high in the lower area during June 2004. In Juam lake, the high phytoplankton biomass in April 2004 was contributed by nanophytoplankton. In Yeongsan lake, chlorophyll a was high in August with high contribution of nanophytoplankton. Primary production was highest in Dongbok lake, and then followed by Yeongsan and Juam lakes. Regression analysis in Dongbok take showed that Chl ${\alpha}$ and primary production had close relations with secchi depth. In Juam lake, phosphate were correlated with the Chl ${\alpha}$, while temperature and TN was correlated with primary production in the lower area. In Yeongsan lake, Chl ${\alpha}$ have positively correlation with TN/TP. Primary production in the upper have high relationship with secchi depth, however, in the lower have high relationship with turbidity. Linear regression analysis showed that nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorus should be reduced for the protections in Juam and Dongbok lakes. We suggested that suspended solids and phytoplankton growth related to turbidity are needed to manage in Yeongsan lake.

  • A 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model has been applied to understand water circulation pattern in Lake Deacheong. The simulation results have been used in sediment transport modeling. A sediment transport model using a particle tracking method has been developed to simulate sediment transport in the ocean, river and reservoir. The model was applied to estimate transport track of particulate pollutants in the lake. The hydrodynamic model was verified for water level variations and showed good agreements. Through the results we found out that water velocity is less than 5 cnysec for mean yearly flow and more than 120 cnysec at some points for the simulated flood flow. The incoming sediment particles in flood season reached into the Daecheong Dam. But the incoming sediment particles in the mean flow were settled down at riverbed and didn't move into the dam. These results can be used in setting up water quality management plan in the lake.

  • In this study, It classified type of irrigation water development in islands district. As result, the types which were type of reservior, fleshwater lake, pumped storage, ets. Most of islands district has developed reuse irrigation system as a pumped storage system. But, Irrigation water-reuse ratio doesn't define a basis clearly and the value of measurement for water-reuse ratio doesn't exist so far. so, we measured Irrigation water-reuse to clarify for water-reuse ratio in a pumped storage system.

  • The marine Transmission tower infrastructure erected in the SI-HWA lake is deteriorated and damaged by the various environment effect, and then, there is a possibility of going bad in the safety. The appropriate maintenance to ensure the security of the structure during life cycle is necessary. Specially the Jacket or the steel file foundation in the sea is apt to be corroded quickly. In this research, to establish life management system of 345kV Yonghung marine transmission tower structure, the actual durability research facility which can obtain the actual proof data is constructed. the maintenance guideline and procedure of the structure are established. Hereafter, there is a plan which will advance the research against the composition of the life prediction model, which is based on the data acquired from the actual durability research facility.

  • This study was conducted to examine the impact of the correlation between habitat suitability of the Saemangeum lake area for otters and spatial variables (watersides, wetlands, farmlands, urban areas, roads, etc.) on the inhabitation of otters. As a result of the habitat suitability analysis, it was found that 380grids of 1097 grids (34.6%) studied are most suitable and suitable, whereas 413 grids of 1097 grids (37.7%) of the total are marginal and unsuitable. Comparatively analyzing otter traces data against for each spatial variable in the Saemangeum area revealed that the distance to the road or man-made areas is directly proportional to the number of otter traces, while more traces of otters were found areas close to waters. Despite the impact from the internal construction of Saemangeum lake, there found 2 to 6 times more otter traces in the area farthest from the urban areas and roads compared to the area nearest to the urban areas and roads. Thus, when restoring habitats for otters, a minimum of 500(m) distance to roads or urban areas, which can be considered as a threat to the habitats, must be secured.
