  • Objectives: The study aims to develop an understanding of the experience of migrant husbands with their South Korean in-laws, specifically from the perspective of migrant husbands from developing countries who reside in South Korea. Method: In total, 13 semi-structured interviews were carried out. Results: The themes drawn from the interview data were "attempting to be accepted as sons-in-law by the in-laws," "interacting closely with in-laws," and "building a nest of their own." When it comes to "struggling to be recognized as sons-in-law" by their Korean families, the migrant husbands in this study met with a high level of opposition from in-laws and sometimes their own family members, made considerable efforts to be accepted as sons-in-law, and then were finally accepted as sons-in-law (although not every migrant husband achieved this). Regarding "interacting closely with in-laws," migrant husbands tried to be recognized as real family members, became hyoja (filial sons) for the sake of their wives and children, and felt a burden about mismatched expectations regarding family roles and obligations. Regarding the final theme, "building a nest of their own," the men tried to be themselves, to attain an equal position to their in-laws, and to maintain a moderate distance between themselves and their in-laws. Conclusions: The study has significant implications for existing government programs designed for multicultural families and how they can be made more inclusive, as well as how new programs can help to improve the relationships between Korean in-laws and migrant husbands.

  • The current study investigated how elderly husbands and wives' marital satisfaction and depression change over time and examined how changes in marital satisfaction account for changes in depression between and within the dyads. The longitudinal dyadic data from the first wave(2006) to the fifth wave(2014) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA), collected by the Korea Employment Information Service, were used for the analyses. Because husbands and wives are interdependent within couples, we applied statistical models for dyadic data. The dyadic growth model(DGM) was used to model the trajectories of marital satisfaction and depressive symptoms. In order to analyze the association of these growth factors, we proposed the dyadic growth actor-partner interdependence model(DG-APIM) and applied the model to the data. The results showed that on average the husbands' marital satisfaction was higher but decreased faster over the course of the study than the wives'. It also showed that the average depression of the husbands was lower than that of the wives but the husbands' depression increased faster than the wives' over the course of the study. The variance of the averages of husbands' (wives's) depression was accounted for by that of wives'(husbands') marital satisfaction, showing a partner effect. The variance of the slopes of husbands'(wives') depression was accounted for by that of marital satisfaction of themselves, showing an actor effect. The results showed that there is a longitudinal interdependence between husbands and wives' marital satisfaction and depression and supported the marital discord model of depression.

  • This study sought to investigate the presence and characteristics of postulated variables(involvement & empathy) that may moderate the need for overt conflict - resolving behavior when husbands and wives disagree on a certain purchasing subdecision and that may explain husband - wife decision - making patterns. For the above purpose, the analyses of this study are based on response of 180 husbands and wives(90 couples) to questions concerning 11 subdecisions of house and sofa-set purchasing decisions. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Income, education, and wives job do not significantly differenciate the levels of involvement and empathy except that education does the levels of wives involvement and empathy and that wives job does the levels of husbands involvement. 2) Husbands and wives indicate significantly different levels of involvement and empathy on most subdecisions. i. e., wives regard all subdecisions importantly. and on 3 subdecisions of joint decision - making pattern, they have the higher consideration for their husband's preferences. 3) Incongruency in husband - wife responses to the questions of decision - making patterns are moderate. 4) Husbands and wives involvement / empathy discriminate well the patterns of decision - making on various subdecisions within 2 product classes. Wives empathy accounts for much discriminating power in both instances. Thus, the need to add these involvement and empathy variables to models of family decision - making is sugguested.

  • This study was to examine the effects of economic, social, psychological, and marital resources on the relationship between retirement related stress and life satisfaction among the retired husbands and their wives. Economic resources included actual income, the amount of reduced income after retirement, and perceived adequacy of income, while social resources consisted of the supports from children, relatives, friends and neighbors. Psychological resources constituted sense of mastery and marital resource was measured by the emotional supports from the spouse. Data from 178 couples in Seoul revealed that retirees and their spouse perceived retirement as a very stressful extent, with husbands viewing their retirement as more stressful than their wives. The retirement related stress was found to be the most significant predictor on the life satisfaction of the couples. For retired husbands, life satisfaction was closely associated to sense of mastery and supports from children and relatives. The health status, perceived adequacy of income, sense of mastery, and supports from children and relatives were related to life satisfaction for wives. Therefore, the effects of personal resources on life satisfaction were smarter than that of retirement related stress for both retired husbands and their wives. Along with discussions, implications for retirement education and suggestions for future study are provided.
