Objective: The aim of this study is to reclassify human errors and to develop hands-on tools to apply the new classification for preventing human error accidents in highway construction site. Background: The main cause of accidents in highway construction was reported as the carelessness of workers. However, such diagnosis could not help us operationally prevent accidents in real workplace. Method: The accidents in highway construction were reanalyzed and the causes of human error were reclassified in order to educate and improve the awareness of human error in highway construction. Field survey and interview with safety managers and workers were conducted to find the causal relationship between the actual accidents and the human errors. Results: The most frequently observed human errors in highway construction were classified into six categories such as mis-perception, distraction, memory fail, slip, cognition error and mis-judgment. In order to provide hands-on tools to increase the awareness of human error in construction field, the human error checklist and card sorting diary were developed. Especially, the card sorting diary was designed to increase the ability in human error inspection of safety manager at construction site. Moreover, posters were developed based on actual accident cases. Conclusion: We suggested that the improved awareness and analytical report on checklist, card sorting diary and posters for construction field could collectively prevent the accident. Application: The classification of human error, hands-on tools and posters can be directly applicable on highway construction site. This analytical and collective approach preventing human error-related accident could be extended to other construction workplaces.
We define that the end effector is the device which interact environment or objects with contact to execute tasks. Up to now, many researchers developed anthropomorphic robotic hands as end effectors. In this paper, we will discuss a problem on the development of a human-scale and motor-driven anthropomorphic robot hand. In this paper, design concept, actuator and transmission, kinematic design and sensing device are presented. By imitating the physiology of human hands, we devised new metacarpalphalangeal joint and interphalangeal joint suitable for human-size robot hands
This paper discusses a physiological approach motivated by the study of human hands for robot hand force control. It begins with an analysis of the human's grasping behavior to see how humans determine the grasp forces. The human controls the grasp force by sensing the friction force, that is, the weight of the object which is felt on his hand, but when slip is detected by sensing skin acceleration, the grasp force becomes much greater than the minimum force required for grasping by adding the force which is proportional to the acceleration. And two methods that can predict when and how fingers will slip upon a grasped object are considered. To emulate the human's capabilities, we propose a method for determination of as grasp force, which uses the change in the friction force. Experimental results show that the proposed method can be applied to control of robot hands to grasp objects of arbitrary weight stably without skin-like slip sensors.
A variety of research has been conducted on anthropometric dimensions and their applications to various products and space architecture, Also robust research has been conducted on various parts of human body and the possibility of applications. However, research on the specific dimensions regarding fingers and characteristics of hands have rarely been conducted in Korea. In addition, except for the NASA Anthropometric Source Book that suggests measures for specific purposes such as gloves and hand-operated device, almost no literature can be found on this topic, The primary objective of this study was thus to provide anthropometric dimensions of Korean hands and fingers and recommend appropriate product design solutions for human hands. Six hundred Korean male and female subjects aging from 11 to 93 were selected, Thirteen different hands and fingers were measured along with demographic data(e.g., age, stature, weight} to determine the relationships among these obtained data, The results of this study should be considered in ergonomic design for every hand-used products and hand-operated control devices.
In the current study, we measured the hands and other representative body items of 223 elementary school girls using Martin Anthropometer and a digital camera so that we would be able to provide information on both size and shape of hands for design of hand-related products. As time goes on, hands get bigger, yet they get thinner at the same time. The data implies that the frame of hands grows, but the skin fat lessens, which could be a determinant factor in the size system of hand-related products. According to the results of a factor analysis on 26 hand items, 5 factors including hand laterality and linearity, fingertip shape, finger breadth, and hand depth, have been extracted. Pearson's correlation showed that most of hand-related factors were strongly associated with other body items. Finger breadth and hand depth, however, were found less related to other body items. The ANOVA test used in testing the difference of hand factors showed, in most items, a difference by ages, but there was no significant differences in fingertip breadth, the third factor, Interestingly, in hand depth, the fifth factor, lower grade girls' hands were thicker than higher grade girls'. This research suggests that the size system of uniformly increasing the size of all hand parts by age groups should be reconsidered and leaves much for improvement.

The purpose of this research is to comprehend experimentally the nature of human static load to wall for making use of the result as basic data to evaluate resisting force of lightweight wall. Human motions exerting static load are classified to 4 types, and two-hands pushing and shoulder pushing are defined as the instantaneously forcing motions with hands or shoulder put on the load plate, respectively. Back leaning and one-hand leaning are defined as motions of taking a rest in their respective comfortable posture. Measurement of static horizontal load caused by each motion showed that the highest load ratio depends on hardness of load plane and was 1.17~1.25 times of weight in two-hands pushing, 0.95~0.99 times in shoulder pushing, 0.16~0.18 times in back leaning, and 0.12~0.15 times in one-hand leaning.

The present study was designed to see what the local cooling of different body regions especially head and neck, hands and feet effect physiological responses in cold environment. Four male subjects wore garments covering whole body except face and rested for 20 min and then they rested for 40 min with uncovered head, neck, hands and feet, respectively in a cold environment(10$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$, 50$\pm$5%R.H.) 1. Rectal temperature increased when hands and feet were exposed to cold environment respectively, and when head and neck, hands and feet were exposed to cold environment together. 2. Exposed skin temperatures fell in cold environment. And hands temperature was lower than any other exposed skin temperatures. The hands temperature was significantly lower when head was exposed than when head was covered. And the feet temperature were significantly lower when hands were exposed than when hands were covered. 3. Mean skin temperature was the lowest when head and neck, hands and feet were exposed simultaneously, In conclusion, skin temperatures of extremities were decreased due to exposure to the cold environment. Especially upper extremities were lower than lower extremities by exposed parts of the body. It seemed that the extremities played the role of cold receptors but head and neck didn't. And there were large heat losses from the unprotected head and neck. In cold environment of 1$0^{\circ}C$ , thus, it is suggested for the purpose of thermoregulatory responses that head and neck would be covered and extremities would be exposed, especially upper extremities.

One of challenging topics for humanoid hands is to modulate a human-like motion of humanoid fingers handling an object. To this end, recognizing the motion behavior of human fingers is very important aspect. Based on this concept, this paper identifies the .joint trajectories of human fingers for an operation of hand opening and closing, and specifies an empirical model that coordinates an inter-articular relationship of human fingers doing the given motion. It is expected that the inter-articular model presented in this paper is applicable for humanoid fingers to mimic the natural motion of human fingers.

This paper presents a system which recognizes dynamic hand gestures for virtual reality(VR). A dynamic hand gesture is a method of communication for a computer and human who uses gestures, especially both hands and fingers. Since the human hands and fingers are not the same in physical dimension, the same form of a gestrue produced by two persons with their hands may not have the same numerical values which are obtained through electronic sensors. In this paper, we apply a fuzzy min-max neural network and feature analysis method using fuzzy logic for on-line pattern recognition.
