Gender Wage Gap in Rural Labour Markets: An Empirical Study of North East India

  • Even after three decades of economic reforms, India's labor market is characterized by stark inter-gender differences in terms of both participation rate and working time. Identification of the causes is necessary to remove the disparity and unequal sharing of economic opportunities to make way for women's empowerment. This research attempts in that direction, examining the prevalence of these inequities in rural areas of North-East Indian states using unit-level data from the 2017-18 Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS). The methodology for the estimation here is based on Blinder- Oaxaca decomposition method after correcting for sample bias forwarded by Heckman. The analysis shows that in both labor force participation and the wage gap, the females in the region lag behind their male counterparts by a huge margin. Further, the analysis shows that one of the main factors leading to the difference is the disparities in human capital assets. On top of female educational enrollment being low, there is also a huge lack of higher educational attainment, while males have accomplished much better in both the parameters. Moreover, the presence of social stigma against women working and discrimination put the female labor outcomes in a gloomy state.

노인의 인적자본이 생활만족도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Human Capital on Life Satisfaction of the Elderly)

  • 본 연구는 노인의 인적자본이 생활만족도에 미치는 영향을 파악하고자 하였다. 연구대상자는 국민노후보장패널조사 8차 부가조사 자료를 활용하였으며 대상자는 1,987명이었다. SPSS 20.0을 이용하여 기술통계, t-test, ANOVA, 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 성별, 연령, 교육수준, 경제활동 상태, 세대구성 형태, 배우자유무, 운동 형태가 생활만족도에 유의한 차이를 보였다. 생활만족도와 건강상태는 가장 높은 정(+)의 상관관계를 나타냈고, 월평균소득과 교육수준은 가장 높은 부(-)의 상관관계를 나타냈다. 생활만족도에 유의한 영향을 미치는 인적자본으로는 남성보다는 여성이, 비취업자보다는 취업자가, 부부세대의 가족형태인 경우에, 건강할수록, 월평균 소득이 높을수록, 규칙적인 운동을 할수록 생활만족도가 상대적으로 높았다.

  • The concept of inclusive development provides equal opportunities for all participants in access to the labor market and resource allocation. This concept emphasizes the equality of human capital, the ecological state of the environment, social protection and food security. This concept is fundamentally different from the standard perception of economic growth, because it has broader goals than simply increasing incomes and GDP. It rejects the position that positive results are an automatic consequence of growth; here the basic condition is human development and increase of its well-being, reduction of poverty. Therefore, it is not the result of distribution that becomes primary, but the involvement in the process of social reproduction. An alternative system of characterization of the country's position according to the resulting indicator of the Inclusive Development Index was presented at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In this research the methodical development of the system of estimation of the index of inclusive development for regions of the NUTS 4 level of the European classification is resulted.

The Role of Investment Attraction in Vietnamese Industrial Parks and Economic Zones in the Process of International Economic Integration

  • This study aims to assess the attraction of foreign direct investment in Vietnamese economic zones (including industrial zones and economic zones). The main research method used are synthesis and comparison analysis based on the data collected from the surveyed group comprising of enterprises operating in the economic zones in the Middle (Chu Lai, Nhon Hoi, Dung Quat) and the Southern (the largest island: Phu Quoc). After conducting surveys, research results show that there is a difference between the assessment and the level to meet the requirements of investors with business environment, expressed through the following criteria: (1) the infrastructure; (2) quality of public services; (3) preferential policies; (4) labor; (5) market; and (6) social services. Based on the assessment of the identified criteria, this paper had suggested six number of recommendations to promote the role of attracting foreign direct investment capital into the economic zones in Vietnam: (1) implementing the "one-stop-shop" policy; (2) continuing to improve the infrastructure of economic zones; (3) prevent and ensure the security of economic zones; (4) implementing vocational training activities to improve quality of human resources; (5) development of supporting industries; (6) raising the quality of capital invested in the economic zone.

The Effects of Social Capital and Community Resources on the Cost of Child Rearing

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the economic burden and cost of child rearing, mainly between families with job-holding mothers and job-exit mothers. The sample consisted of 665 mothers with at least one child aged one year or less from the 2009 Panel Study on Korean Children. We found social capital reduced the child rearing costs for both job-holding and job-exit mothers, while community resources significantly reduced the costs of child rearing only for job-holding mothers. Based on these results, implications for family policy for families with young children are suggested.

한국의 IFDI유입이 지역성장에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on the Effect of IFDI on the Regional Growth in Korea)

  • 본 연구는 2000~2014년 기간 동안 한국의 16개 지역에 유입된 IFDI가 지역성장에 미치는 영향을 동태적 패널모형인 시스템 GMM을 적용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과, 한국에 유입된 IFDI는 지역 내 경제성장 즉 자본형성, 고용창출, 수출확대 등에서 정(+)의 효과가 나타났으나, 수입은 부(-)의 효과가 발생하였다. 반면, 인적자본은 정(+)의 효과를 보였으나 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 한편 권역별로 유입된 IFDI의 성장효과를 살펴보면, 수도권과 동남권은 GRDP의 성장에 부(-)의 효과를 보인 반면, 대경권에서는 정(+)의 효과를 보였다. IFDI유입과 인적자본 간 보완관계에서도 유사하게 나타났다. 본 연구는 한국에 유입된 IFDI가 지역성장에 중요한 요인이지만, 지역 내 GRDP에 미치는 성장효과는 지역특성에 따라 차이가 존재한다는 것을 확인하였다. 따라서 지역 내 유입된 IFDI의 성장효과를 확대하기 위해서는 지역특성에 맞는 IFDI유치전략과 함께 산업구조개편이 시급하다고 판단된다.

Distribution of Factors Affecting Foreign Direct Investment in ASEAN Countries

  • Purpose: Research on attracting foreign direct investment plays an important role in ASEAN countries. ASEAN has needed FDI capital for development and integration with many developing countries. Research design, data and methodology: This study is conducted to assess the impact of factors: inflation (INF), economic growth (GDP), population (POP), and trade (TRADE) on attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) of ASEAN countries. The study will find out how factors distribution contributes to FDI attraction. The study collects data from 10 ASEAN countries from 2010 to 2020. With data collected for ten countries from 2010 to 2020, data analysis with panel data will be used in this study. The Regression with Driscoll-Kraay standard errors correction model will be used in the study. Results: Panel data analysis shows that economic growth and population positively impact FDI attraction in ASEAN countries. However, two factors: INF and TRADE, do not affect FDI. Conclusions: Countries need to focus on economic development, create many good conditions for people and domestic enterprises and create opportunities for foreign investors to pay more attention. improving the quality of domestic human resources will help to better improve the working quality factor when the demand for high-quality human resources increases.

대학생의 사회적 자본과 문화적 자본이 직업 포부에 미치는 효과 분석 (Occupational Aspirations of College Students in Korea : The Effect of Social Capital and Cultural Capital)

  • 한국 대학생들의 장래 희망 직업은 어떤 요인에 의하여 결정될까? 시월(William H. Sewell)과 동료들이 개발한 위스콘신 모형의 결론에 따르면, 교육과 직업 획득에 사회심리학적 요인들이 통계적으로 의미 있는 영향을 미친다. 높은 수준의 직업적 지위를 갖기를 원하는 젊은이들이 결국에는 더 높은 사회적 지위를 가진다는 것이다. 그러한 점을 고려할 때, 젊은이들의 직업 포부를 결정하는 요인을 파악하는 작업은 매우 중요하다. 우리는 직업 포부를 트라이만(Donald J. Treiman)이 개발한 표준국제직업위신척도(Standard International Occupational Prestige Scale: SIOPS)를 이용하여 측정하였고, 중회귀분석을 이용하여 독립변수들의 통계적 유의성을 검정하였다. 사회적 자본 변수는 린과 듀민(Nan Lin and Mary Dumin)의 '직업위계를 이용한 사회적 자원 측정 방법'(position generator)을 적용하였고, 문화적 자본 변수는 부르디외(Pierre Bourdieu)의 개념 정의에 기초를 두고 우리가 개발한 척도로 측정하였다. 분석에 사용한 자료는 '2004년도 한국 대학생의 의식과 생활에 관한 조사연구'의 원 자료인데, 유효 표본 수는 1,947명이다. 분석결과, 성별, 인적 자본, 아버지 직업 등 기존 연구를 통해 알려져 있는 변수들과 더불어, 사회적자본과 문화적 자본이 장래 희망 직업을 결정하는 데 통계적으로 유의미한 영향력을 미친다는 점을 발견하였다.

Analysis of Financial Status for the Self-Employed - Effect of Economy Change and Comparison of the Self-employed and Earners -

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the changes in financial structure of the self-employed brought on the economic crisis in Korea.. We use financial ratio analysis, such as income to expenditure ratio, liquidity ratio, debt ratio, and capital accumulation ratio to analyze financial well-being of self-employed households. This study used a 1997 and 1998 Korean Household Panel Study collected by Daewoo Economic Research Institute. The average amount of holding of each type of asset showed that the investment of self-employed households decreased in the banking industry and the stock market in 1998 compared to 1997. On the other hand, asset allocation in bond and real estate increased, which implied preference for a stable type of asset with the increase in uncertainty of the future and economic instability. Devaluation of real estate allowed households to easily obtain real estate and increase preference for asset allocation in real estate after the crisis. The changes in financial ratio for the year 1998 shows that such ratios as income to expenditure, liquidity, and capital accumulation, decreased compared to the year 1997. Among those ratios, the income to expenditure ratio showed the biggest decline because of reduced income of self employed households. The results implied that the income structure of the self-employed is unstable, thus the self-employed were likely to be greatly affected during the economic downturn. Earners have more average income and net assets than the self-employed. However, using financial ratios, it was found that self-employed households were more stable than employees. The results shows that the financial ratio analysis is better tool to estimate households financial status. Implications for financial educators, counselors, and planners are offered. The results will provide implications for policy makers to establish appropriate policies for the self-employed and help them financially survive.

경제발전에 있어서의 경영효율에 관한 연구 (A Study on Managerial Efficiency in Economic Development)

  • The standard theory of production treats human and non-human inputs in the same way. Inert Areas Theory drops this assumption. One distinction is obvious. Human capital, the source of human inputs, can not be purchased outright by firms. Usually what is purchased are units of labor time. What is critical is directed effort, at or beyond some level of skill. Direct effort, however, involves choice and motivation, and these are the critical variables left out of the standard theory. Leibenstein introduces the concept of "inert areas" by which he means "a set of effort positions whose associated levels of utility are not equal but in which the action required to go from a lower to a higher utility level involves a utility cost that is not compensated for by the gain in utility." This idea is used when discussing the behavior of firm's management.f firm's management.
