  • As multimedia technologies develop, three-dimensional (3D) technologies are attracting increasing attention from researchers. In particular, video quality assessment (VQA) has become a critical issue in stereoscopic image/video processing applications. Furthermore, a human visual system (HVS) could play an important role in the measurement of stereoscopic video quality, yet existing VQA methods have done little to develop a HVS for stereoscopic video. We seek to amend this by proposing a 3D visual attention (3DVA) model which simulates the HVS for stereoscopic video by combining multiple perceptual stimuli such as depth, motion, color, intensity, and orientation contrast. We utilize this 3DVA model for pooling on significant regions of very poor video quality, and we propose no-reference (NR) stereoscopic VQA (SVQA) method. We validated the proposed SVQA method using subjective test scores from our results and those reported by others. Our approach yields high correlation with the measured mean opinion score (MOS) as well as consistent performance in asymmetric coding conditions. Additionally, the 3DVA model is used to extract information for the region-of-interest (ROI). Subjective evaluations of the extracted ROI indicate that the 3DVA-based ROI extraction outperforms the other compared extraction methods using spatial or/and temporal terms.

  • A method for image compression based on decomposition is presented. We design the efficient coding technique for upper band image signals. This coding technique with directive 1-D DPCM is based on the statistical properties of upper bands. Lower band image signals is encoded using 2-D DPCM. The directive 1-D DPCM is performed, scanning upper bands according to edge direction. And then the predicted error signals of upper band sis coded using B1 and Huffman code, and the predicted error signals of lower band is coded using Huffman code. The proposed system shows improved performance when compared with other existing methods with respect to peak signal to noise ratio(PSMR) and human visual system(HVS) properties.

  • In this paper, an adaptive cosine transform coding scheme which incorporate human visual properties into the coding scheme is investigated. Human vision is relatively sensitive to mid-frequency band, and insensitive to very low and very high frequency band. These property was mathematically modelled with MTF(Modulation Transfer Function) through many psychovisual experiment. DCT transforms energy in spatial domain into frequency domain, so can exploit the MTF very efficiently. Another well-known visual characteristics is spatial masking effect that visibility of noise is less in regions of high activity than in regions of low activity. Proposed coding scheme imploys quantization matrix which represent the properties of these spatial frequency response of human vision, and adaptively quality of an image. To compute the activity index of an image block, simple operation is performed in spatial domain, and according to activity index. block of low activity region is more exactly quantized relatively than that of high activity region. Results showed that, at low bit rate, the subjective quality of the reconstructed images by proposed coding scheme is acceptible than that of coding scheme without HVS properties.

  • This paper integrates human visual system (HVS) characteristics into compressed sensing recovery of color images. The proposed visual weighting of each color channel in group-sparsity minimization not only pursues sparsity level of image but also reflects HVS characteristics well. Additionally, an edge-preserving filter is embedded in the scheme to remove noise while preserving edges of image so that quality of reconstructed image is further enhanced. Experimental results show that the average PSNR of the proposed method is 0.56 ~ 4dB higher than that of the state-of-the art group-sparsity minimization method. These results prove the excellence of the proposed method in both terms of objective and subjective qualities.

  • In this paper, we propose novel scene change detection and key frame selection techniques, which use two feature images, i.e., DC and edge images, extracted directly from MPEG compressed video. For fast edge image extraction. we suggest to utilize 5 lower AC coefficients of each DCT. Based on this scheme, we present another edge image extraction technique using AC prediction. Although the former is superior to the latter in terms of visual quality, both methods all can extract important edge features well. Simulation results indicate that scene changes such as cut. fades, and dissolves can be correctly detected by using the edge energy diagram obtained from edge images and histograms from DC images. In addition. we find that our edge images are comparable to those obtained in the spatial domain while keeping much lower computational cost. And based on HVS, a key frame of each scene can also be selected. In comparison with an existing method using optical flow. our scheme can select semantic key frames because we only use the above edge and DC images.

  • In this paper, a new hierarchical image segmentation algorithm based on human visual system(HVS) characteristic is proposed which can efficiently reduce and control transmission information quantity without the degradation of the subjective and objective image quality. It consists of image segmentation based on mathematical morphology and region merging considering HVS characteristic for the pairs of two adjacent regions at each level of the hierarchy. Image segmentation is composed of 3-level hierarchical structure. In the region merging structure of each level, we extract the pairs of two adjacent regions which human vision can't discriminate, and then merge them. The proposed region merging method extracts pairs of two neighbor regions to be merged and performs region merging according to merging priority based on HVS characteristics. The merging priority for each adjacent pair is determined by the proposed merging priority function(MPF). First of all, the highest priority pair is merged. The information control factor is used to regulate the transmission information at each level. The proposed segmentation algorithm can efficiently improve bottleneck problem caused by excessive contour information at region-based very low bit rate coding. And it shows that it is more flexible structure than that of conventional method. In experimental results, though PSNR and the subjective image quality by the proposed algorithm is similar to that of conventional method, the contour information quantity to be transmitted is reduced considerably. Therefore it is an efficient image segmentation algorithm for region-based very low bit rate coding.

  • New very low bit rate segmentation video image coding technique is proposed by segmenting image into textually homogeneous regions. Regions are classified into one of three perceptually distinct texture classes(perceived constant intensity, smooth texture, and rough texture) using the Human Visual System(HVS) and the fractals. To design very low bit rate video image coder, it is very important to determine the best block size for estimation the fractal dimension and the thresholding of the fractal dimension for each texture class. Good quality reconstructed images are obtained with about 0.10 to 0.21 bit per pixel(bpp) for many different types of imagery.

  • The current JPEG-2000 standard is a wavelet based scheme because wavelet transform have some advantages compare to DCT transform. In compressed images, there are some image degradation factors like contrast distortion by Quantization process. This factor is very important to HVS (Human Visual System). Therefore, In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for contrast enhancement using the properties of wavelet coefficients. This algorithm is processed in the wavelet domain and so it can be applied efficiently to JPEG-2000.

  • In this paper, we propose new features for describing texture images by using multi-channel Gabor filter and log-polar transform based on human visual system (HVS). Gabor features are extracted by the mean and standard deviation of energy in Gabor response, followed by Fourier series extension. Log-polar features are extracted by log-polar transform and projection. The proposed texture descriptor performs reasonably well with less number of features than other texture descriptors, which has been verified by experiments using some texture images of MPEG-7 data set.

  • We propose a new logo watermark scheme for digital images which embed a watermark by modifying middle-frequency sub-bands of wavelet transform. Independent component analysis (ICA) is introduced to authenticate and copyright protect multimedia products by extracting the watermark. To exploit the Human visual system (HVS) and the robustness, a perceptual model is applied with a stochastic approach based on noise visibility function (NVF) for adaptive watermarking algorithm. Experimental results demonstrated that the watermark is perfectly extracted by ICA technique with excellent invisibility, robust against various image and digital processing operators, and almost all compression algorithms such as Jpeg, jpeg 2000, SPIHT, EZW, and principal components analysis (PCA) based compression.
