Recently, natural disasters including earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, and snowstorms, in addition to disasters of human origin such as arson, and acts of terror, have caused numerous injuries and fatalities around the world. During such disasters, victims need to obtain information such as the exact location of the disaster and appropriate evacuation routes in order to relocate to safe areas. In this study, We propose the algorithm for Emergency Rescue Evacuation Support System(ERESS). In case a emergency disaster occurs, ERESS is possible to detect it quickly using through the movement of people. The mobile terminal analyzes behavior and location of indoor pedestrian. And it sends the result to the server. The server determines whether an emergency situation occurred or not based on the received transmission information. When an emergency situation occurs, the server will notify it to the mobile terminal. Then, indoor pedestrian conduct emergency evacuation using mobile terminal.
Recently, the safety assessments with using the various evacuation programs are performed for improving the performance of fire and evacuation safety in the building. Generally, the evacuation programs can simulate the human behavior in fire situation by applying the variation of the movement speed and Fractional Effective Dose (FED) index in the smoke. However, if the simulation is performed without optional setting around the fire, the agents do not avoid the fire and they move through the fire. Therefore in this study, we define the radiative repulsion force which exists between the fire and the agents. Moreover, we modify the Helbing's movement model by adding the radiative repulsion force. As a result of the modified movement model, all agents move around the fire and they do not enter the upper bound area of radiative heat flux, $2.4kW/m^2$. From these results, we verified the reliability of the modified movement model.

Disaster mythology is "beliefs about human behavior in disaster that have been proven to be wrong through scientifically conducted research studies." Disaster researchers have discovered a series of disaster myths. The results of research survey based on 491 individuals confirm prior research representing widespread belief in disaster mythology such as panic, looting, crime, evacuation and lethargy. This study also indicates that, while high, the percentage of local government officials demonstrating belief in disaster myths was lower than the public except for looting. The probability of believing disaster myths was greater for individuals who were female (panic and evacuation), old (evacuation and lethargy), in their twenties and thirties (looting), and officials with disaster related work experience (panic, looting and crime). The results indicate the importance of understanding public belief to make effective emergency plans.
Owing to our rapidly aging society, accessibility evaluation to enhance the ease and safety of access to indoor and outdoor environments for the elderly and disabled is increasing in importance. Accessibility must be assessed not only from the general standard aspect but also in terms of physical and cognitive friendliness for users of different ages, genders, and abilities. Meanwhile, human behavior simulation has been progressing in the areas of crowd behavior analysis and emergency evacuation planning. However, in human behavior simulation, environment models represent only "as-planned" situations. In addition, a pedestrian model cannot generate the detailed articulated movements of various people of different ages and genders in the simulation. Therefore, the final goal of this research was to develop a virtual accessibility evaluation by combining realistic human behavior simulation using a digital human model (DHM) with "as-is" environment models. To achieve this goal, we developed an algorithm for generating human-like DHM walking motions, adapting its strides, turning angles, and footprints to laser-scanned 3D as-is environments including slopes and stairs. The DHM motion was generated based only on a motion-capture (MoCap) data for flat walking. Our implementation constructed as-is 3D environment models from laser-scanned point clouds of real environments and enabled a DHM to walk autonomously in various environment models. The difference in joint angles between the DHM and MoCap data was evaluated. Demonstrations of our environment modeling and walking simulation in indoor and outdoor environments including corridors, slopes, and stairs are illustrated in this study.
The 2005 west off Fukuoka earthquake with Mjma 7.0 occurred in the vicinity of Fukuoka city with 1.4 million populations, which had been regarded as rather seismically inactive in Japan. The strong motion records by K-net indicated PGV of 64 cm/s in Fukuoka city and some condominium buildings sustained extensive non-structural damages. In this study, we conducted a questionnaire survey for residents of 8 condominium buildings located in the downtown area of Fukuoka city after the earthquake. The results indicate that damaged nonstructural walls and distorted doors disrupted evacuation route for many occupants, and furniture and content damage on upper floors became severer resulting in higher rates of human casualty. Earthquake preparedness for indoor safety was raised after the earthquake, though further safety measures can be advised. In the phase of post-earthquake emergency and restoration period, residents' management organizations play important roles, so that neighborhood activities to promote communication networks are important in urban environment with aging population.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, many reports and books that compiled testimonies of adult victims were published. Thus, refugee situations are well known, but information on the refugee situations of Japanese students is not. This is because what actions the students took and how they sought refuge from an earthquake or tsunami have not been fully recognized. The purpose of this study was to examine and analyze students' refuge behavior in the Great East Japan Earthquake and to predict the refuge behavior of students affected by future disasters. The results of the study showed that students passively acquired information about earthquakes and tsunamis and that their refuge behavior was highly dependent on adults. Immediately after an earthquake, people tended to protect themselves and stay in place until the shaking stopped. However, they tended to move to another place after the shaking occurred frequently. Students living on ria coastlines were likely to move to high places to escape the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis, whereas students living in plain regions were likely to move vertically to tall buildings, such as schools. As for the mode of movement to refugee shelters, the students arrived at the final refugee shelters in one move, and it is assumed that the refugee shelters should be decided in advance and the students should move there.
This study is a preparation for the application of FSA (Formal Safety Assessment) to the fire safety of ships. FSA is the new-fashioned methodology proposed to prevent ships from the accidents. To make a base of the fire safety assessment about ship's fire protection design and Classification Society rule, statistical informations for the fire safety engineering are investigated. From results, the necessity of new criterion for ship's fire safety design, the need to study the human behavior in the evacuation from fire, and the development of new fire progress model considering special situations in ships are acknowledged.
The purpose of this study is to suggest the development direction of fire safety through the analysis of previous researches in the field of fire fighting. To this end, 929 papers published in the Journal of Korean Institute of Fire Science and Engineering have been sorted by field of study and analyzed for frequency. Accordingly, it was confirmed that researches were conducted in the order of fire chemistry and physics, detection and extinguishing system, fire safety design and management, evacuation and human behavior. In contrast, very little research has been conducted on human behavior, fire safety education, or training. This result is discussed in the article, and suggestions for future research objectives are made.

Even though the passengers' safety has priority on Passenger ship, there is no criterion on the evacuation performance related with human behavior. To uncover the potential problems of domestic criteria on safety of passenger ships, this study performed simulation ad analysis the evacuees safety before and after the Sewol's remodelling. It is clear that the assembly stations of both before and after Sewol remodelling have sufficient areas to satisfy the domestic criterion by simply human- body's-area, but those are failed to assemble all the passengers by the simulation tool that reflects the human behaviors' characteristics. For the healing angle as 0 degree, and the criteria of SOLAS, it was found out that all the passengers can safely evacuate from each cabins to the embarkation stations for both of the before-and-after the Sewol remodelling. But for the healing angle as 20 degree, both of the before-and-after Sewol remodelling are evaluated as possible to make all the passengers evacuate for day scenario and impossible for night scenario of SOLAS criteria. And because of the worse conditions after the remodelling, the probabilities of Sewol(before) are showed wide band comparing to Naminoue (after).
The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of occupant's path selection on the shape of the pictogram and the opening/closing of the door. This study was carried out through a simulation experiment using computer virtual reality. Exit light pictogram for exit door and exit light pictogram for passage were arranged for each scenario in type T corridor and type + corridor. The computer graphic was used to carry out the simulation. In addition, we analyzed the response of human behavior according to the two directions (left and right) of exit light pictogram for exit door and the effect of opening direction of doorway. In addition, the change of decision-making according to the presence or absence of exit light pictogram for passage was confirmed. The results of the direction selection response were as follows. First, in the case of the T-shaped corridor, if the exit light was not installed on the door, it was influenced by the opening direction of the door. Second, when the exit light is attached to the door, the selectivity in the direction that matches the exit light pictogram direction is high. As a result, it was confirmed that the pictogram direction of the exit light influenced the evacuation route selection of the occupants.
