  • Ring-stiffened cylinders are widely used as the pressure hull of submarines and underwater vehicles. For large ring-stiffened cylinders cylindrical shells are fbricated by cold rolling of flat plates and then welding of curved shells. After forming cylinders ring-stiffeners are welded on th the cylinders. Due to these cold roiling and welding initial shape imperfections and residual stresses exists in fabricated ring-stiffened cylinders. It is well known that the initial shape and material imperfections affect the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders significantly. In this paper previous researches on the effects of initial shape imperfections and residual stresses are briefly reviewed Recently a numerical analysis computer program was developed to predict the ultimate strength of ring-stiffened cylinders subjected to hydrostatic pressure, which is based on the Dynamic Relaxation technique. This program was employed to numerically investigate those effects. The numerical predictions were substantiated with relevant experimental results.

  • The present paper studies the ultimate torsional strength of stiffened box girders with large deck opening due to the influence of cracks. Three types of hull girders with different spans are provided for comparison. Potential parameters which may have effects on the torsional strength including the mesh refinement, initial deflection, material strain hardening, geometric properties of crack and stiffener are discussed. Two new concepts that play an significant role in the ultimate strength research of damaged box girders are introduced, one of which is the effective residual section (ERS), the other is the initial damage of the failure zone (IDFZ) for intact structures. New simple formulas for predicting the residual ultimate torsional strength of cracked stiffened box girders are derived on the basis of the two new concepts.

  • In this study, we attempted to find substitute materials, swelling rice hull, cocopeat, corncob and coconut sawdust, for sawdust in bottle cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus. Chemical characters of mixture substrates with four substitute materials for pine sawdust were not different significantly. By comparison in mycelial growth and yield of fruitbody, mixture substrate of cocopeat were showed the same level in P. ostreatus. Therefore, it is suggested that cocopeat was substituted for sawdust for cultivation of P. ostreatus.

  • This study is focused on the skill to prevent RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) from sinking. For better ability to prevent sinking, single hypalon tube is replaced by double TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) tube that is excellent at frictional wear strength and oil-resisting qualities. High buoyant materials are arranged in empty spaces of ship so that ship's spare buoyancy is increased. And for restoration of stable position of ship, the self-righting system is installed. Aluminium alloy is used for increasing hull strength.

  • Carbon fiber is an excellent structural material, which has been proven in many industries, and the shipbuilding industry is no exception. In particular, in advanced maritime countries, special ships of the Navy and Coast Guard with carbon fiber composite hulls have already been deployed. In Korea, carbon fiber composite materials have been applied to a 10-ton class leisure craft or a 30-ton class patrol, but no research has been done on a hundred of tons or more vessels. In this study, the feasibility study of a 500-ton patrol vessel with a carbon fiber composite hull was conducted through an analysis of similar cases abroad. As a result, it was recognized that the developed hull can be reduced in weight by about 21% to 25% compared to the existing aluminum or FRP hull. It was also confirmed that this light-weight effect can induce the improvement of the maximum speed and the improvement of the operating range via simulations.

  • An attempt was made for the application of porous reticular metal to a heat dissipation material in semiconductor process. For this aim, the electrodeposition of Fe/Ni alloy on the porous reticular Cu has been performed to minimize the thermal expansion mismatch between Cu skeleton and electronic chip. Preliminary tests for the electrodeposition of Fe/Ni alloy layer were conducted by using standard Hull Cell to examine the effect of current density on the composition of alloy layer. It seemed that mass transfer affected significantly the composition of Fe/Ni layer due to anomalous codeposition in the electrodeposition of Fe/Ni alloy. A paddle type stirring bath, which was employed to control the mass transfer of electrolyte in the work, was found to allow the electrodeposition Fe/Ni with a precise composition. result showed that the thermal expansion of Fe/Ni alloy layer was much lower than that of pure copper. From the tests of heat dissipation by using the apparatus designed in the work the heat dissipation material fabricated in the work showed the excellent heat dissipation capacity, namely, more than two times as compared to that of pure copper plate.

  • A field trial in an ice-covered sea is one of the most important tasks in the design of icebreaking ships and offshore structures. To correctly estimate the ice load and ice resistance of a ship's hull, it is essential to understand the material properties of sea ice during ice field trials and to use the proper experimental procedure for gathering effective ice data. The first Korean-made icebreaking research vessel, "ARAON," had her second sea ice trial in the Arctic Ocean during the summer season of 2010. This paper describes the test procedures used to obtain proper sea ice data, which provides the basic information for the ship's performance in an ice-covered sea and is used to estimate the correct ice load and ice resistance of the IBRV ARAON. The data gathered from the sea ice in the Chukchi Sea and Beaufort Sea during the Arctic voyage of the ARAON includes the temperature, density, and salinity of the sea ice, which was believed to be from two-year old ice floes. This paper analyses the gathered sea ice data in comparison with data from the first voyage of the ARAON during her Antarctic Sea ice trial.

  • The study aims to improve the previous theory-based algorithm on the lightweight design of laminate structures of a composite ship based on the mechanical properties of fiber, resin, and laminates obtained from experiments. From a case study on using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of e-glass fiber woven roving fabric/polyester resin used as the raw material for the hull of a 52 ft composite ship, the equation for calculating the weight of laminate was redefined, and the relationship between decreasing mechanical properties and increasing glass content was determined from the results of material testing according to ASTM D5083 and ASTM D790. After applying these experimental data to the existing algorithm and improving it, a possible laminate design that maximizes the specific strength of the composite material was confirmed. In a case study that applied the existing algorithm based on rules, the optimal lightweight design of composite structures was achieved when the weight fraction of e-glass fiber was increased by 57.5% compared with that in the original design, but the improved algorithm allowed for an increase of only 17.5%.

  • In the case of hull material. large sized merchant ships are made of steel, on the other hand FRP or wood are used for small sized fishing boats. At present in Korea approximately 88,500 fishing boats are in operation of which 70% are made of FRP In the meantime, stainless steel is frequently used as shaft materials of the small-size FRP fishing boat. Namely, the kinds of shaft materials are STS 304(18Cr-8Ni), STS 316(18Cr-12Ni-2.5Mo steel) and STS 630(17Cr-Ni-Nb steel)etc. Among these things, STS 304 which is the cheapest and having ordinary corrosion resistance is most widely used as 2nd class shaft material. But, using STS 304 for shaft system material of the small-size FRP fishing boat on seawater environments entails a severe corrosion which causes shaft system troubles. Particularly, the corrosions tend to be concentrated of the stern and bow side, propeller shaft surface of inside of stern tube and the boat having no stern cooling pipe line system. As a solution for those problems, research on the ways to mitigate corrosion on the part of 2nd class stainless steel shaft have been undertaken. In the result, not only clarification for the reason of corrosion of the part of stainless steel shaft used mainly for the small-size FRP fishing boat was done, but also most optimal corrosion protection system was developed by experimenting shaft's protection simulation based of the electrochemical cathodic protection principle. In addition, verification through the field test on the optimal cathodic corrosion protection method by means of aluminum sacrificial anode was carried out. In this study, effective and economical shaft's protection system is suggested to the small-size FRP fishing boat operator by substantiating the results obtained from the research on the optimal cathodic protection.

  • We examined the effects of crude and eight pure material (${\beta}$-sitosterol, ${\beta}$-sitosterol-${\beta}$-D-glucoside, 1-tetratriacontanol, hentriacontane, orizaterpenoid, stigmas-5-en-$3{\alpha}$ 26-diacetate, stearic acid, myristic acid), extracted from rice hull, on growth inhibition of toxic cyanobacterium, Microcystis aeruginosa NIER 10010. Strains of M. aeruginosa and Daphnia magna, obtained from the NIER (Korea) and BBE (Germany), were cultured in the CB medium with hard water. For all four treatment concentrations 0, 10, 100 and $1,000{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) of the crude extract, the cell number of M. aeruginosa was reduced by $59{\sim}73%$ during the 7-day test period. Among eight kinds of pure extracts, ${\beta}$-sitosterol-${\beta}$-D-glucoside, hentriacontane and orizaterpenoid $(1,000{\mu}g\;L^{-1})$ exhibited relatively higher growth inhibition compared with other pure extracts. The mixture of three pure extracts (${\beta}$-sitosterol-${\beta}$-D-glucoside, hentriacontane and orizaterpenoid) showed the highest growth inhibition at $1,000{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$. Therefore, the synergistic effect was significantly highlighted by a mixture of the three pure extracts (p<0.05). Under the condition of $1,000{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ in the crude extracts, D. magna exhibited survival rate by >85% for 96 hours. In conclusion, the growth inhibition of M. aeruginosa was probably attributed to the synergistic effect of various compounds extracted from the rice hull.
