  • An approach to model a high-speed monohull vessel is introduced. The high-speed monohull form belonging to the category of multihull is drawing new attention, due to the rapidly growing trend of fast passenger ships and military purpose. Multihull forms are much thinner in their overall shape, compared to those of the conventional commercial vessels. Moreover, the parent hull forms are not readily obtainable when a new design is intended, which makes it hard to perform various technical calculations in terms of hull optimization, hydrodynamic computation, structural design, and so forth. In this paper, a parametric technique is used to design a high-speed hull form. To model a hull form, NURBS (Non Uniform Rational B-Spline) representation is used. The goal of research is to provide a fast and convenient tool to design an initial hull form with fewer parameters available in the early design stage. The technique employed in this paper will be applied to the design of multihull forms, such as catamaran, trimaran, and semi-swath.

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), which are becoming more and more important in ocean exploitation tasks, needs energy conservation urgently when sailing the complex mission path in long time cruise. As hull lines optimization design becomes the key factor, which closely related with resistance, in AUV preliminary design stage, uncertainty parameters need to be considered seriously. In this research, Myring axial symmetry revolution body with parameterized expression is assumed as AUV hull lines, and its travelling resistance is obtained via modified DATCOM formula. The problems of AUV hull lines design for the minimum travelling resistance with uncertain parameters are studied. Based on reliability-based optimization design technology, Design For Six Sigma (DFSS) for high quality level is conducted, and is proved more reliability for the actual environment disturbance.

This paper presents a hydrodynamic design of an underwater cleaning robot and its evaluation for an underwater ship hull cleaning robot. The hydrodynamic design process of the robot body is described in detail. Optimal body design process with compromises among conflicting design requirements is given. Experimental results on the hydrodynamic performance of the robot are given.

  • After many casualties of conventional bulk carriers in recent years, a double hull bulk carrier was proposed to enhance the structural safety of a side shell and a transverse bulkhead. In this paper, two alternative structural designs of a double hull bulk carrier were carried out based on the Lloyd's rule. One has the double sided hull with longitudinal stiffeners and the other has that with a girder. The final structural design was examined in comparison with an existing single hull bulk carrier from the viewpoints of cargo hold capacity and the increases of weight and construction cost. Generally, the construction cost of a ship consists of the costs of material, labor and overhead cost. But, in this study, the relative construction cost concept was introduced to compare the economical validity more precisely. In this concept, fixed overhead cost is excluded in the assessment of construction cost, and only the variable overhead cost is added up to labor cost. As the result of this study, a double hull bulk carrier can be constructed within 1% increase of weight and construction cost.

  • Recently oil price has got lower, but energy efficiency has been considered as an important factor to minimize ship operational costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For the reason, it is necessary that energy efficiency improvement for hull form design and operational performance reflect an understanding of the vessel's operational profile. Throughout the life of the vessel, this can lead to important economies of fuel, even if, in some cases, a small penalty can be taken for design condition. In the present paper, hull form was developed for 5,000TEU class container carrier at given operation profile. As a CFD result at several design point, optimized hull form has improved resistance performance in comparison with the basis hull form. To reducing the viscosity and the wave resistance at multi draft and multi speed, the hull form was investigated for Cp-curve, frame and local shape. Numerical study has been performed using WAVIS & Star-CCM+ and verified by model test in the towing tank.

  • The IACS Common Structural Rules are to be applied for double hull tanker of more than 150m length with contracted after 1 April 2006. The objectives of the rules are to make more robust, safer ship and to ensure transparency of the technical background. In compliance of CSR, we had carried out prescriptive rules scantling determination and 3-D hold FE analysis of AFRAMAX TANKER. Prescriptive rules scantling determines the minimum required scantling, hull-girder longitudinal bending and shear strength, hull girder ultimate strength, local strength of plate and stiffener, strength of primary supporting member and fatigue assessment of the longitudinal stiffener end connections to the transverse bulkhead. 3-D hold FE analysis assesses the structural adequacy of the vessel's primary hull structure and major supporting members using yielding and buckling failure modes. So we could verify the strength assessment of AFRAMAX TANKER applied CSR.

  • Yacht design is significantly affected by the hull geometrical characteristics. Therefore, it is necessary to closely examine the relation between hull and performance, before considering characteristics of sea condition. In this study, Genetic Programming is used to derive a formula the relationship between hull geometric characteristics and performance. Using the formula, a new guideline is proposed to determine performance of a yacht.

  • The proposed design methodology represents a new approach to optimize the propeller-hull system simultaneously. In this paper, two objective functions are considered, the first objective function is Lifetime Fuel Consumption (LFC) and the other one is cost function including thrust, torque, open water and skew efficiencies. The variables of the propeller geometries (Z, EAR, P/D and D) and ship hull parameters (L/B, B/T, T and $C_B$) are considered to be optimized with cavitation, blades stress of propeller. The well-known evolutionary algorithm based on NSGA-II is employed to optimize a multi-objective problem, where the main propeller and hull dimensions are considered as design variables. The results are presented for a series 60 ship with B-series propeller. The results showed that the proposed method is an appropriate and effective approach for simultaneously propeller-hull system design and is able to minimize both of the objective functions significantly.

  • This paper presents hull form design details and performance characteristics of the SWATH ship 'SEON JIN' built as an underwater test support ship. The hull form is developed systematically varing sets of 11 form parameters which define a unique hull under waterline. Using this geometry variation scheme we have generated a number of alternatives and selected the final hull which fulfills the design objectives and matches the design constraints. After selecting the final hull form we have investigated performances thoroughly through model tests, and confirmed through sea trials that the performance goals be achieved.

  • From the results of model tests, statistical regression analysis for EHP estimation based on hull form parameters is adopted in this study. From this result, the method for estimation of EHP and optimization of hull form parameters at the initial design stage of fishing boats is developed. This method is applied to two standard fishing boats with chine lines. The EHP s are estimated and compared to experimental results. From the optimization of four principal hull form parameters of these fishing boats, approximately 19% of resistance reduction at the design speed is achieved and thus certifies that this method can be used efficiently for the initial design of hull forms of fishing boats.
