A study was conducted in Korea on the leaching behavior and possibility of recovery of vanadium and other valuable metals from domestic vanadium titanomagnetite (VTM) by direct acid leaching. In this study, a VTM concentrate containing 0.8% V2O5 was used, and the ratio of magnetite to ilmenite was calculated as 1.9:1 by using the HSC program. The leaching behavior of vanadium from the VTM was similar to that of iron, and it was affected by the concentration of sulfuric acid and temperature. Further, titanium could be leached in the form of TiOSO4 at a temperature higher than 75℃. To improve the leaching efficiency of V, Fe, and Ti in VTM, reductive sulfuric acid and oxidative sulfuric acid leaching were performed. When Na2SO3 was used as a reducing agent, the leaching rate of vanadium was 80% of that in that case of leaching by sulfuric acid. Similarly, the leaching rate of titanium increased from 20% to 50%. When Na2S2O8 was used as an oxidation agent, most of the vanadium was leached, and the main residue found by XRD analysis was ilmenite. In studies on the possibility of recovering valuable metals, the selective extraction of metals is hardly achieved by solvent extraction from oxidation leaching solutions; however, in this study, Cyanex 923, a solvation extractant from reductive leaching solutions, could selectively extract Ti.

The method of concrete mix design used in this study aims to achieve the identical specified design strength, applying different types and replacement ratio of mineral admixtures and afterwards, fire tests were conducted using the standard time-temperature curve specified in the ASTM E119 to identify the influences of the types of mineral admixtures on the fire resistance performance of high strength concrete(HSC). The least spalling was observed in the test specimen containing blast furnace slag as a partial replacement of cement, while the most significant spalling phenomena were observed in the blast furnace slag test specimen that silica-fume was added in. In particular, the reasonable volume of spalling was observed when solely replaced by silica fume. However, the influence of the cement replacement by silica fume and blast furnace slag on the increases of spalling can be explained through blocked pores by the fine particles of silica fume, leading to decreases in permeability.

The aim of this study was to investigate that Injinoryung-san-Ga-Samchilgun(IJORS) has an inhibitory effect on the development of liver fibrosis in rats. The influence of IJORS on liver stellate cell viability in rat was measured by the MTT assay, and proliferation was measured by the BrdU assay. The mRNA expression of procollagen type $1{\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}-SMA$, TIMP1, and TIMP2 all of which are associated with liver fibrosis, were analyzed by RT-PCR. The inhibitory effect of IJORS on procollagen production in hepatic stellate cell was examined using by enzyme immuno assay(procollagen Type 1 C-Peptide EIA). And after IJORS was orally administered to experimental rats with thioacetamide(TAA)-induced liver fibrosis for 4 weeks, the body weight, liver function test, complete blood and the change of portal pressure were measured. IJORS prevented hepatic stellate cell viability and proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. IJORS reduced the mRNA expression of procollagen type $1{\alpha}2$, ${\alpha}-SMA$ and TIMP1 and the production of procollagen protein. IJORS inhibited the increase of AST, ALT, WBC and portal pressure in rats administered by TAA. IJORS is considered to prevent liver fibrosis by inhibiting the activation of stellate cell and production of procollagen and prevent the progress of liver fibrosis by inhibiting the inflammation of liver tissue complicated in many liver disease.
There are several studies on the effects of emissions of highly reactive volatile organic compounds (HRVOC) from the industrial sources in the Houston-Galveston-Brazoria (HGB) area on the high ozone events during the Texas Air Quality Study (TexAQS) in summer of 2000. They showed that the modeled atmosphere lacked reactivity to produce the observed high ozone event and suggested "imputation" of HRVOC emissions from the base inventory. Byun et al. (2007b) showed the imputed inventory leads to too high ethylene concentrations compared to the measurements at the chemical super sites but still too little aloft compared to the NOAA aircraft. The paper suggested that the lack of reactivity in the modeled Houston atmosphere must be corrected by targeted, and sometimes of episodic, increase of HRVOC emissions from the large sources such as flares in the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) distributed into the deeper level of the boundary layer. We performed retrospective meteorological and air quality modeling to achieve better air quality prediction of ozone by comparison with various chemical and meteorological measurements during the Texas Air Quality Study periods in August-September 2006 (TexA QS-II). After identifying several shortcomings of the forecast meteorological simulations and emissions inputs, we prepared new retrospective meteorological simulations and updated emissions inputs. We utilized assimilated MM5 inputs to achieve better meteorological simulations (detailed description of MM5 assimilation can be found in F. Ngan et al., 2012) and used them in this study for air quality simulations. Using the better predicted meteorological results, we focused on the emissions uncertainty in order to capture high peak ozone which occasionally happens in the HGB area. We described how the ozone predictions are affected by emissions uncertainty in the air quality simulations utilizing different emission inventories and adjustments.
Ecological instream flow was quantitatively calculated based on the river characteristics and fish habitat in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir. The river bed and width did not change from 1988 before the am construction to 2004 after the dam construction, but the bed sediment size was attenuated a little in 2004. According to result that investigate fishes, 4 family 11 species including Acheilognathus koreensis were collected. Among them, Zacceo koreanus of cyprinidae was dominant, and Coreoleuciscus splendidus did sub-dominant. The habitat suitability indexes were estimated for two fish species Zacco koreanus and Coreoleuciscus splendidus using Physical Habitat Simulation System (PHABSIM) considering the river characteristics. In Gamdong and Daeti sites, the optimal ecological flow for Z. koreanus and C. splendidus were $13.90\sim12.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$ and $15.50\sim11.60\;m^3\;s^{-1}$, respectively. In contrast, the optimal flow for the two species in Bunam site were $7.00\;m^3\;s^{-1}$. The ecological instream flow in the downstream of Yongdam Reservoir was between normal and high flow rate.
In this study, the structural performance of high strength concrete (HSC) column-normal strength concrete (NSC) slab connection was investigated according to confinement effects, aspect ratio (h/c) and strength ratio ($f^{\prime}_{cc}/f_{cs}$). The study was conducted by using finite element analysis. To verify the analysis methods, the experiments and analyses results were compared. The specimens were classified by connection types including interior column, edge column, corner column and isolated column. As a result, ultimate strength of interior column was larger than other specimens. Also, the axial stresses of connection were decreased when the aspect ratio was increased. As the strength ratio between column and slab was increased, the ultimate strength of specimens was also increased until the strength ratio was reached to 1.83.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the physicochemical properties of different batches of Saururus chinensis using different roasting temperature that were dried at different using different roasting temperatures and their were determined the antioxidative activities of water and 70% ethanol extracts. Methods: Extracts were examined for the total phenolic acid content, the and flavonoids contents and the antioxidant properties, including DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTs scavenging activity and, the reducing power. Results: Moisture content was significantly higher in the LSC and the crude ash content was significantly higher in the HSC. The crude protein content was higher in the LSC (although not significantly), and the crude fat and carbohydrate contents were higher in the HSC (although not significantly). The total phenolic content was lower in the samples extracted with water, but there was no significant difference. However, the extracts extracted with 70% ethanol at a high drying temperature were significantly higher. The low temperature and high drying temperature batches of Saururus chinensis were significantly higher in the samples extracted with 70% ethanol than those extracted with 70% ethanol. The total phenolic acid content, the total flavonoid content and the electron donating ability were highest in the ethanol extract of Saururuschinensis treated at a high temperature. However, the ABTs radical activity was highest in the water extracted, high-temperature treated Saururuschinensis. The 70% ethanol extract of high temperature roasted Saururuschinensis had the highest antioxidative activities of all the Saururuschinensis batches. Conclusion: The total phenolic acid contents, total flavonoid contents, electron donating activity and reducing power activity were highest in all the 70% ethanol extraction batches of the high-temperature treated samples.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is the leading cause of community-acquired pneumonia throughout the world. The bacteria invade through lung tissue and cause sepsis, shock, and serious sequelae, including rheumatic fever and acute glomerulonephritis. However, the molecular mechanism associated with pneumonia's penetration of lung tissue and invasion of the blood stream are still unclear. We attempted to investigate the host cell response at protein levels to S. pneumoniae D39 invasion using human lung cancer epithelial cells, A549. Streptococcus pneumoniae D39 began to change the morphology of A549 cells to become round with filopodia at 2 hours post-infection. A549 cell proteins obtained at each infection time point were separated by SDS-PAGE and analyzed using MALDI-TOF. We identified several endoplasmic reticulum (ER) resident proteins such as Grp94 and Grp78 and mitochondrial proteins such as ATP synthase and Hsp60 that increased after S. pneumoniae D39 infection. Cytosolic Hsc70 and Hsp90 were, however, identified to decrease. These proteins were also confirmed by Western blot analysis. The identified ER resident proteins were known to be induced during ER stress signaling. These/ data, therefore, suggest that S. pneumoniae D39 infection may induce ER stress.

Coculture of HSC with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) is one of used methods to increase cell numbers before transplant to the patients. However, because of difficulties to purify HSCs after coculture with BM-MSCs, it needs to develop a method to overcome the problem. In the present study, we have examined whether a culture insert placed over a feeder layer might support the expansion of HSCs within the insert. $CD34^+/ $ cells isolated from the umbilical cord blood by using midiMACS were divided into three groups. A group of 1 $\times$$10^5$ cells were grown on a culture insert without feeder layer (Direct). The same number of HSCs was directly cocultured with BM-MSCs (Contact). The third group was placed onto an insert below which BM-MSCs were grown (Insert). To distinguish feeder cells from HSCs, BM-MSCs was pre-labeled fluorescently with PKH26 and 1 $\times$$10^5$ cells were seeded in the culture dishes. After culture for 13 days, the expansion factor (x) of HSCs that were grown without feeder layer (Direct) was $26.6 \pm 8.4.$ In contrast, the number of HSCs directly cocultured with feeder layer was 59.6 $\pm$ 0.5 and that of HSCs cultured onto an insert was $46.9 \pm 8.4.$ The percentage of BM-MSCs cells remained being fluorescent was $97.9 \pm 0.3%$ after culture. Immune-phenotypically large proportion of cultured cells were founded to be differentiated into myeloid/monocyte progenitor cells. The ability of BM-MSCs, fetal lung, cartilage and brain tissue cells to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs was also examined using the insert. After 11 days of coculture with each of these cells, the expansion factor of HSCs was 15.0, 39.0, 32.0 and 24.0, respectively. Based upon these observations, it is concluded that the coculture method using insert is very effective to support ex vivo expansion of HSCs and to eliminate the contamination of other cells used to coculture wth HSCs.

Along the fire resisting capacity of high strength concrete has been brought up as a social issue, and the Ministry of Land also had notified the control standard about it, the researches for improving the fire resisting capacity have been considerably activated these days. In this study, we performed a research for developing a high strength concrete, contains the fiber cocktail, which is a hybrid of polypropylene fiber as organic matter, and steel fiber. As we analyzed the temperature of the steel part during the fire test with 100 MPa high strength concrete, there was a tendency that the lower temperature comes out with the larger cross section, and the $600{\times}600mm$, $800{\times}800mm$ cross sectioned can secure the fire resistance capability, so the $600{\times}600mm$ is deducted as the optimal size if we consider the double economic feasibility. As well, among them the best qualified $600{\times}600mm$ shapes, the fiber cocktail hybrid of $1.5kg/m^3$ PP fiber and $40kg/m^3$ of steel, comes out the best ratio.
