  • Along with the rapid increase of the elderly population, our country is facing the elderly problem as a social issue due to nuclear family, the increase of female social activities and recognition changes about the elderly support. In this connection, the welfare services to protect the overall elderly is requested urgently and the countries which have been experiencing aging earlier than our country are studying a lot a community daycare method which delays moving of the elderly into facilities as long as possible, reduces costs and efficiently provides services in order to curtail the big burden to the national economy. As one of these solutions, there is the elderly daycare center and this can be considered to be a compromising service type to correspond to our social changes, make individual and social supports without damage to the sense of value about support. Therefore, the space for the elderly can keep up with the falloff of mental and physical functions, dementia and geriatric diseases according to aging and careful consideration about the space considering stability and convenience is required. At this point, this study has the purpose to plan a daycare center which reflects the characteristics of the elderly to protect them within the community safely and comfortably. As for the research method, case study was conducted to understand the overall situation on the space plan of the daycare center for 5 daycare centers located in Seoul and found out problems. In addition, interview research was conducted for the heads of daycare centers or social workers, care workers and photographing and drawing collection were performed simultaneously. • The objective of this study was to compare early child care center teachers' attitudes for meal and snack guidance between Sweden and Korea. Participants were 251 early child care center teachers (Sweden: 134, Korea: 117) working in Goetebory, Sweden, and Seoul, Korea. The survey was conducted from December in 2003 to February in 2004. SPSS programme was used for statistical analysis. Sixty five point eight percent of the Korean early child care center teachers provided a certain amount of foods for children. But $20.9\%$ of Swedish provided a certain amount of foods for children, $79.1\%$ of them provided the amount a child wanted. Sixty one point seven percent of Korean teachers allowed a child leave foods on the plate, but $95.5\%$ of Swedish teachers asked a child eat all food on the plate. When a child didn't want to eat, $61.1\%$ of the Korean teachers fed him/her, but $11.0\%$ of the Swedish teachers did. Only $42.4\%$ of the Swedish teachers allowed a children eat sweets, but $92.9\%$ of Korean did. The Swedish teachers' perception for food guidance were eating by child himself/herself > washing hands before eating > having appropriate table manner > eating as talking with friends > not playing during the meal time, while the Korean teachers' was taking various food > having appropriate table manner > eating by child himself/herself, not playing during the meal time > washing hands before eating. The Swedish teachers thought 'eating as talking with friends' and 'eating by child himself/herself' is important, where as the Korean's did 'eating without making noise', 'not playing during the mealtime' in the eating behavior. For 'brushing teeth after meal' the Swedish teachers' score (1.5) was lower than the Korean (4.2). The results is necessary to improve meal and snack guidance for Korean early child care center teachers' education.

  • Although the government has revised the child welfare act, institutionalized the establishment of local children's centers, and given financial support for them, there are a number of problems with respect to their operation. Specifically, one of main problems is their limited space. Diverse problems that go with the arrangement of limited space and usability have occurred, however there are only a few strategies to use limited space flexibly. This study assumed variability as one of the methods to solve spatial problems. As a basic research for the assumption, Analyzing the variable method and characteristics of domestic and foreign child-care facility guidelines was performed trying to take advantage of as a basic data in order to seek a variable scheme of local children centers' indoor space. For this purpose, study analysed the methods and characteristics of variability centering on aspects related to variability which are environmental design elements required by local children's centers as suggested in previous studies. The results are as follows. First, the variability of space should be planned according to activity and time, and consider the methods of division, storage, and other facilities necessary. Second, methods of variability in space can be classified into creating areas and structures that are variable. Third, as a result of analysing the environmental design elements required by local children's centers, this study discovered the following characteristics: multi-purpose usability through a combination of variable devices, transition through a variable space medium and setting up areas and expansion of indoor variability assuming usability through internal and external connections.

  • Through an examination of future societal development, it was found that the demographic structure is gradually aging, thus placing higher demands on elderly welfare centers. This study conducted surveys on three elderly day care centers in the entire region, aiming to enhance the pivotal role of elderly day care centers in the welfare facilities for the elderly. The current usage status, interior architectu/ral evaluations, and questionnaire surveys of these centers were analysed. The results of investigation into the architectural environment of the elderly day care centers showed that in terms of physical environment, smaller-scale centers did not lag behind larger ones in internal facilities, but larger-scale centers excelled in spatial utilization. Furthermore, the results of questionnaire survey results revealed correlations between family relationships, health status, level of assistance required, and satisfaction with facility usage, while no correlation was found between usage time, health status, and satisfaction with facility usage. This study conducted basic investigations such as architectural and physical surveys, and questionnaire surveys on elderly day care centers. Based on the survey results, future design practices should continuously explore and innovate to meet the needs of an aging society, further improve the community care system, provide more comprehensive and meticulous services for the elderly, and lay the foundation for enhancing the quality of life for the elderly and providing comfortable services.

  • A smart home system improves the elderly's quality of life by monitoring and analyzing their movements and health conditions with better health-care and social support services. Therefore, there has been an effort to adopt a smart home system for the independently living elderly. However, to the best of our knowledge, no study has investigated the usability of a smart home system on actual independently living elderly housing in long-term settings. Thus, this study aims to demonstrate the usability of a smart home system on independently living elders in living lab conditions. The BLE smart band and the BLE receiver were chosen for the smart home system to monitor the movement of the participants in their homes as well as to monitor the heart rates, step counts, sleep index. Nine independent living elderly from the senior welfare center in Kimjae participated in this living lab demonstration experiment for ten months. This demonstration experiment confirmed the effectiveness of low-cost and easily adoptable IoT-based BLE sensor sets on independent living elders and discussed the troubles and limitations of the experiment. By grasping the pros and cons of IoT-based BLE sensor sets, this study seeks to improve the accessibility and usability of smart home systems for the elderly population in independent living arrangements.

  • The aim of this research is to understand the characteristics and status of existing public facilities, in order to propose the necessary basic materials for the planning and development of improved public facilities to assist communities. Objects of this research are the public facilities provided by the Government throughout the 25gu in Seoul. The methods of this research were carried out through the home page of each facility, telephone inquiries and gujung backseo. Investigations were carried out 3 times between the periods of January-June and September in 2009. Results of the research are as follows - 1) Through the investigations of classifications and distribution status of 5 public facilities over 25gu, quantity supply problems were analyzed. 2) Building distributions of 5 public facilities were classified by types and analyzed. 3) A number of compound facilities were classified and analyzed to determine the complexities of the 5 public facilities. 4) Complex types and characteristics of public facilities in 25gu in Seoul were analyzed. Based on the results of the research, the following conclusions are drawn: 1) Public facilities throughout the 25gu in Seoul have common characteristics and functions and they are spread out evenly in each gu. This means that public facilities are standardized in Seoul. Characteristic public facilities suitable to each gu should be planned accordingly. 2) Public facilities in Seoul show a single form of one facility. Therefore, initiative plans for the complexity of facilities are required. 3) Complex public facilities in Seoul need to be the center of community life in each gu. It is necessary to take into account the diverse life styles and classified needs of residents for complex facilities. Based on the research, complex types such as public administrative+cultural facilities, culture+welfare facilities, medical+welfare facilities can be presented. These complex types should not be classified according to any particular use, but they should be commonly used by diverse generations and every social class. The inquiries of users of public facilities and the programs of each public facility are not included in this research. Thus, the reseaarch limits the proposals for complex public facilities. In the future, the characteristics of each gu in Seoul should be studied and understood, so that appropriate public facilities and their complex plans can be researched continuously and necessarily.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the educational program that is offered on the information menu in the homepage (Familynet) of the Healthy Family-Support Center (HFSC) and suggest developmental directions. For this purpose, first, it deduced that the managerial principles of the education program, from related theories, are included in the family-system, family-structure, family-structure analysis, family life-cycle and ecological system theories. Second, it analyzed the educational programs of 44 local centers that are connected to the homepage (familynet.or.kr) of HFSC. Finally, it suggested developmental directions for managerial improvements of educational programs. As a result, the most popular part in the educational program was parent education, especially the visiting-father education program. The number of couple-related education programs were fewer than those for parent education, because it is difficult for couples to be present at the same time. Family and Self-Cognition programs cover insufficient contents in the parent-education program. Though total program in familylife education is quite large, the number of programs in each separate part is far too small for such a wide subject. So, each part in the program should be made more sufficient. Finally, it suggested the development of an evaluation system and a coaching process as special services for families that are in different development stages and have different family experiences, resources, needs and goals.

  • The history of rehabilitation of disabilities in Korea began with the foreigners and missionaries who were interested in it after Korean War. In 1981, Disabled Persons Welfare Act was enacted and the 88 Paralympics brought the nations attention to the welfare and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. Since then, the facilities and the services for the disabled persons have expanded rapidly and the rehabilitation treatment and nursing intervention are drawing more attention. Against this background, the survey on the current status of disabilities, welfare service, facilities, and rehabilitation nursing was conducted. The results of this survey are as follows. 1. According to the 2000 census of disabilities, the number of persons with disabilities in Korea is estimated at 1,449,500, or 3.09% of the entire Korean population, 0.74% up from 2.35% in 1995. 2. Disability Types in 2000 The 2000 census showed that the persons with disabilities numbered 1,449,496 out of the total population and 1,024,371 persons are registered for disability, making up 70.7% of the estimated disabled population. Among them, physically disabled persons accounted for the largest 41.7% (605,127) and mentally retarded persons stood at the smallest 9% (13,481). 3. Percentage of Disability Presence The survey showed that more than 90% of disability were acquired. However, 44.8% of mental disability and 61.4% of hearing/speaking disability were not acquired after birth. This means that these disabilities happened by congenital cause or birth accident. 4. Yearly Figure of Registered Disabled Persons In 1989, 218,601 persons registered for disability and, in 2000, the number increased by 4.7 times to 1,024,371. These figures are different from the actual number of disabled persons. According to the 1995 census, 1,053,486 were disabled persons but only 378,323registered for disability. And, in the 2000 census, 1,024,371 out of the 1,449,496 of disabled persons registered for disability. 5. Welfare Service for Persons with Disability 62.6% of the total disabled people are registered and physically disabled persons accounted for the highest percentage of 96.7%. 26.5% of non-registered disabled people said that they didnt know the registration procedure. The rest of them replied that they didnt think they were disabled or that registration didnt seem to give any benefits. 6. Welfare Policies for Disabled Persons The welfare benefits given to the disabled are as follows: Issuance of disabled sign for car drivers, Permission to use LPG fuel, Communication fee reduction, Tax exemption related to cars, Reduction of public facility fees, Household allowance, Tax reduction or exemption, Medical allowance and education subsidy for children, and Housing. 7. Current Condition of Welfare Facilities by Disability Type The welfare institutions for disabilities numbered 188 in total and they can accommodate 16,823 persons. Categories of these institutions are physical disability(37), visual disability(10), hearing/speaking disability(14), mental retardation(59), and sanatoriums(68). 8. Human Resource of Rehabilitation of Disabilities Advanced education programs include rehabilitation nursing in its curriculum and this was selected as the program of Korean Academic Society of Nursing in 1990. In November 1997, Korean Academic Society of Rehabilitation Nursing was launched and many academic meeting and seminars were held. This organization is also making efforts to develop the education program for qualified rehabilitation nursing professionals and to develop the standards of rehabilitation nursing practice. In the professionals of the rehabilitation, there are rehabilitation specialist, physical therapist, speech therapist, occupational therapist. It is needed to come up with the measures to supply stable human resources following the demand of disabled persons and to recognize the private certificates for rehabilitation professionals as official ones after reviewing the education and training programs of private institutions. 9. Rehabilitation Nursing 1) Rehabilitation nursing was taught as an independent subject in 11 undergraduate programs and 9 graduate programs. 2) Research on rehabilitation nursing in Korea were 24 experimental research and 11 non-experimental research. The intervention of experimental research were mostly education and exercise rehabilitation programs. 3) In the three rehabilitation hospitals, nursing is divided into two categories, direct nursing and education & counseling. Direct nursing includes tracheostomy or nasogastric tube care, urination and defication, skin care, pain control, complication prevention and care, prevention of injury from a fall, etc.
