  • The use household water purifier is continuously increasing due to the distrust of the piped, rap water, which may be caused by the deterioration of water quality and water supply facilities in Korea. The water purifier distributing in the domestic market is the membrane type that composes of membrane as a basic filter, sediment filter as a prefilter and activated carbon filter instead of one purifying water system. The membrane type using as a water cleaning system is mainly the method of micro filtration(NIF) as well as ultra filtration(UF) and reverse osmosis(RO). The types of MF and UF are using to remove suspended solids and virus, and RO is using to remove ionic compound in chemical organic compounds. At the beginning the household water purifier was imported as end-product or assembled by only importing module from small businesses in Korea. Therefore, people was hard to confide in the product quality because the sales policy and management of water purifier by small business were not effectively organized. However, the defects of water purifier having up to now ate improving by the efforts of special branches of water purifier and large enterprises, and new great products are developing and producing. To develop the best quality product of water purifier in Korea, it should be considered seasonal water characteristrics rather than any other condition. For example, the water purifier can be affected by the water temperature change, increase of suspended solids in the rainy season and inflow of raw water having concentration in a dry season. The subject we have to investigate in the future is to develop the water purifying system adaptable in Korea which can treat the water quality using close analyses of local and seasonal water characteristics.

Synthesis and comparison of pure TiO2 and metal/non-metal doped TiO2 as a photocatalyst

  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are considered hazardous air pollutants and these are emitted from building materials and household products. VOCs can cause global warming as well as human sickness, and even cancer. Photocatalysis provides a way of converting VOCs into harmless materials. Various researches have shown that $TiO_2$ is the most efficient photocatalysts due to its excellent activity. In this study, metal/non-metal doped $TiO_2$ particles are synthesized for the enhancement of the photocatalytic properties of pure $TiO_2$. By metal/non-metal doping, band gap energies of prepared samples were analyzed by UV/Visible spectrophotometer. The physical and chemical properties of synthesized powder were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, by BET for measuring their specific surface area, and by XRD for phase identification and particle size determination. Degradation ability for p-xylene was evaluated through monitoring the concentration in a closed chamber. Relation between their properties and decomposition abilities for VOC were evaluated based on the experimental results.

오존에 의한 암모니아 산화시 과산화수소가 미치는 영향 (Effect on the Hydrogen Peroxide in the Ozonation of Ammonia)

  • Ammonia is used in the manufacture of fertilizers, refrigerants, stabilizers and many household cleaning agents. These wide applications resulted in ammonia contamination in water. Ammonia can be removed from water by physical, biological, and chemical methods. Ozonation is effictive in the treatment of water with low concentration of ammonia. This study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia with or without hydrogen peroxide. The results were as follows; The destruction rate of ammonia increased gradually with the influent hydrogen peroxide concentration up to 0.23 mM and inhibited in the range of 0.23~11.4mM, and the maximum removal rate of ammonia achieved at 0.23mM of hydrogen peroxide, and the overall kinetics was first order. The combination effect of hydrogen and ozone to oxide ammonia in aqueous solution was better than ozone alone. The reacted ammonia was converted completely to nitrate ion.

  • 오일 가격의 폭등에 따른 바이오디젤 사용량의 증가로 인해 글리세롤 부산물의 공급과잉이 유발되었다. 원래 글리세롤은 석유화학,페인트,담배, 생활용품 및 화장품 분야에 원료자체로써 사용되어 왔다. 최근에는 글리세롤을 값싼 원료로 사용하여 고부가가치의 기능성 물질을 개발하는 응용 연구를 통해 고부가가치의 유도체 물질로 상용화되는 사례가 많이 보고되고 있다. 본 총설에서는 글리세롤을 원료로 사용하여 새로운 고부가 글리세롤 유도체로 개발한 연구동향을 검토해 보았다.

브롬촉매에 의한 암모니아의 오존산화시 특성 (Characteristics of ammonia ozonation with bromide)

Ammonia can be removed from water by physical, biological, and chemical methods. Especially ozonation is effective in the treatment of water with low concentration of ammonia. Therefore, this study is undertaken to provide kinetic data for the ozonation of ammonia with bromide. The results were as follows; Ammonia oxidized by ozone with bromide catalysis. The denitrification rate of the ammonia increased proportionally to the concentration of bromide, and the overall reaction order was zero. It was also found that the effect of bromide ion concentration on the denitrification can be expressed by Monod type equation and there was no more effect above a proper bromide ion concentration. The reacted ammonia was converted completely to nitrate ion without bromide, but the denitrification of ammonia by ozone was conducted in the presence of bromide.

  • Head-space method를 이용하여 살충제에 대한 VOCs의 배출특성을 평가한 결과 모든 제품에서 다양한 VOCs가 검출되었으며, 제품에 따라 다소 차이는 있지만 대부분의 생활용품에서 유해한 오염물질이 검출되었다. 국내 제조회사나, 동일제품의 종류, 제품의 형태에 따라 VOCs의 종류가 유사한 것도 있지만, 대부분 배출특성의 차이가 있을 수 있다고 사료되어진다.

  • Several instances of synergistic interaction have been identified between alkyl amine oxide and long chain fatty acohol polyethoxylates in various surfactant formulation. The purpose of this study was examined whether these benefits could be observed within the framework of generic hand-surface cleaning formulations. Comparative evaluation were also carried out to determine the performance characteristics of low-and zero-phosphate systems in which amine oxide and alcohol ethoxylates are used. Best cleaning was observed with 1:1 mixtures of the subject surfactants, but substantial improvements over fatty alcohol ethoxylate alone also were noted with formulations that contained lower ratios of amine oxide.

방전 프라즈마 화학반응을 이용한 유해물질의 분해 (Decomposition of Hazardous Gaseous Substances by Discharge Plasma)

  • In this study, in attempt to develop a new application technique of discharge plasma, we employed a kind of discharging method called SPCP ( short for Surface discharge induced Plasma Chemical Process). Applications of SPCP have been widely used for years. Compact ozonizers to deodorize household equipments like refrigerators we a part of such applications. We took advantages of the compactness and durability of the SPCP electrode to set up an experimental apparatus for decompositing vapor of aromatic hydrocarbons such as toluene, benzene and xylenes, which are major substances given off In painting or washing processes and aggravate working conditions. Results obtained from this study are summarized as follows. 1) Aromatic hydrocarbon vapors of up to 2,000ppm were almost thoroughly decomposed at the flow rate of 4ℓ/min or lower under the discharge with electric power of 400 Watts. 2) In dry air, as the decomposition progresses, tar-like substance deposits on the discharging areas, which deteriorated the decomposition rate in the end. This substance, however, was almost thoroughly removed by keeping discharge in dry air containing no solvent vapor.

Effect of rearing season, host plants and their interaction on economical traits of tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta Drury- an overview

  • Tropical tasar silkworm, Antheraea mylitta (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is a polyphagous silk producing forest silkworm of commercial importance in India. Forest dependent people rear its larvae on different forestry host plants twice or thrice in a year for small household income. Larvae of A. mylitta feeds on many forest tree species, but always show a great degree of selectivity as a function of its behavioural responses to physical structure and chemical features of the host plants. Cocoon crop of A. mylitta is influenced by heterogeneity of tasar food plants and climatic conditions of the habitat. The role of host plants, temperature, humidity, rainfall, photoperiod and climatic variables on the growth and development of insects have clearly been demonstrated. This article entails an in-depth analysis on ecological and nutritional aspects of A. mylitta, which may provide selective information to researcher and forest managers, who are particularly associated with livelihood improvement of the poor people in forested area through location specific forest insect industry.

Flexible Thin Layer Battery가 부착된 lontophoretic Gel Patch를 이용한 Vitamin C 유도체의 경피 흡수 증진 (Enhanced Transdermal Delivery of Vitamin C Derivative using lontophoretic Gel Patch with Flexible Thin Layer Battery)

  • 비타민 C는 강력한 환원제로서 멜라닌 색소의 합성을 저해하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 그러나 일반적인 화장품 제형에서는 낮은 안정성과 경피 흡수의 문제점으로 만족할 만한 효과를 나타내지 못한다. 본 연구에서는 안정성이 개선된 비타민 C의 유도체인 ascorbyl glucoside (AsAG)을 유효성분으로 하여 경피흡수를 증가시키고자 하였다. 본 실험에서는 유연하면서도 박막 형태의 배터리를 장착한 패치 화장품을 제조하고 안정성과 경피흡수성을 평가하였다. 피부에 낮은 전류를 증가하는 이온토포레시스를 활용하여 피부에 적용하는 전류의 세기를 증가시키면 물질의 경피흡수는 증가한다. 그러나 전류의 세기를 증가시키면 피부 부작용이 증가하기 때문에 본 연구에서는 한국인의 피부에 맞는 적절한 전류를 선택하여 피부 부작용을 최소화하였다. 이런 결과들을 바탕으로 유연하면서도 가벼운 박막 배터리를 개발하였으며, 2%의 AsAG을 함유한 이온토포레시스 패치의 안전성, 경피흡수정도, 미백효과 등을 검토한 결과 피부에 가하는 최적의 전류는 1.5 V의 배터리를 사용하여 피부 부작용과 경피흡수를 고려하여 평균 0.1 mA이었다. 또한 패치의 임상실험 결과 유의한 수준의 미백효과를 보였으며 피부 자극도도 통상의 화장품 수준을 나타냈다.
