Kalman Filter model of demand for residental water and consumption pattern were tested for their ability to explain the hourly residental demand for water in metropolitan distribution system. The hourly residental demand for water is calculated from the daily residental demand and consumption pattern. The consumption pattern which has 24 time rates is characterized by data granulization in accordance with season kind, weather and holiday. The proposed approach is applied to water distribution system of metropolitan areas in Korea and its effectiveness is checked.

Short-term load forecasting(STLF) for electric power demand is essential for stable power system operation and efficient power market operation. We improved STLF method by using hourly temperature as an input data. In order to using hourly temperature to STLF algorithm, we calculated temperature-electric power demand sensitivity through past actual data and combined this sensitivity to exponential smoothing method which is one of the STLF method. The proposed method is verified by case study for a week. The result of case study shows that the average percentage errors of the proposed load forecasting method are improved comparing with errors of the previous methods.

This study examined the characteristics of the hourly demand of city gas in Korea and proposed multiple regression models to obtain precise estimates of the hourly demand of city gas. Forecasting the hourly demand of city gas with accuracy is essential in terms of safety and cost. If underestimated, the pipeline pressure needs to be increased sharply to meet the demand, when safety matters. In the opposite case, unnecessary inventory and operation costs are incurred. Data analysis showed that the hourly demand of city gas has a very high autocorrelation and that the 24-hour demand pattern of a day follows the previous 24-hour demand pattern of the same day. That is, there is a weekly cycle pattern. In addition, some conditions that temperature affects the hourly demand level were found. That is, the absolute value of the correlation coefficient between the hourly demand and temperature is about 0.853 on average, while the absolute value of the correlation coefficient on a specific day improves to 0.861 at worst and 0.965 at best. Based on this analysis, this paper proposes a multiple regression model incorporating the hourly demand ahead of 24 hours and the hourly demand ahead of 168 hours, and another multiple regression model with temperature as an additional independent variable. To show the performance of the proposed models, computational experiments were carried out using real data of the domestic city gas demand from 2009 to 2013. The test results showed that the first regression model exhibits a forecasting accuracy of MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) around 4.5% over the past five years from 2009 to 2013, while the second regression model exhibits 5.13% of MAPE for the same period.
With the growing penetration of distributed generation including from renewable sources, smart grid power system is needed to address the reliability problem. One important feature of smart grid is demand response. In order to design a demand response program, it is indispensable to understand how consumer reacts upon the change of electricity price. In this paper, we construct an econometrics model to estimate the hourly price elasticity of demand. This panel model utilizes the hourly load data obtained from KEPCO for the period from year 2005 to 2009. The hourly price elasticity of demand is found to be statistically significant for all the sample under investigation. The samples used for this analysis is from the past historical data under the price structure of three different time zones for each season. The result of the analysis of this time of use pricing structure would allow the policy maker design an appropriate incentive program. This study is important in the sense that it provides a basic research information for designing future demand response programs.
Energy demands for offices in Korea are surveyed and analyzed to generate communicational models for simulations. Daily energy loads of 13 office buildings scattered in the 6 largest cities in the country are surveyed and analyzed based on energy consumption log sheets. Detailed hourly loads that are frequently required when a detailed operation simulation is performed are measured using remote data acquisition processes for 3 offices. The complete load demand models of electricity, cooling, heating and hot water are established by combining the daily and hourly patterns based on the statistical behavior of the hourly patterns.
High level of accuracy in forecasting heat demand of each district is required for operating and managing the district heating efficiently. Heat demand has a close connection with the demands of the previous days and the temperature, general demand forecasting methods may be used forecast. However, there are some exceptional situations to apply general methods such as the exceptional low demand in weekends or vacation period. We introduce a new method to forecast the heat demand to overcome these situations, using the linearities between the demand and some other factors. Our method uses the temperature and the past 7 days' demands as the factors which determine the future demand. The model consists of daily and hourly models which are multiple linear regression models. Appling these two models to historical data, we confirmed that our method can forecast the heat demand correctly with reasonable errors.

DHV (Design-Hour Volume) for the estimation of number of lanes is determined by design-hour factor (K). The design-hour factor is defined as the proportion between the 30th highest hourly volume and AADT and determines the level of road planning. However, the K-factor estimated by an existing method has a problem because the hourly volumes on holiday and weekend appear in the relatively low rank in real world in spite of expected high volumes. To improve this problem, this study make use of the concept of traffic demand in estimating the design-hour factor. After the congested hourly volumes transfer to traffic hourly demand, the K-factors are estimated on urban expressways and are compared to the existing K-factors. It is perceived that the new K-factors have more realistic values due to utilizing the traffic demand. reflecting the congested flow.
In this paper, the effects of the uncertain hourly load demand are stochastically analyzed especially by the consideration of the average over generation of the Unit Commitment(UC) results. In order to minimize the effects of the actual load profile change, a new UC algorithm is proposed. The proposed algorithm calculates the UC results with the lower load level than the one generated by the conventional load forecast. In case of the worse load forecast, the deviation of the conventional UC solution can be overcome with the lower load level and the more hourly reserve requirements. The proposed method is tested with sample systems, which shows that the proposed method can be used as the basic guideline for selecting the potimal load forecast applying to UC problem.

In recent years, Smart Water Grid (SWG) concept has globally emerged over the last decade and also gained significant recognition in South Korea. Especially, there has been growing interest in water demand forecast and this has led to various studies regarding energy saving and improvement of water supply reliability. In this regard, this study aims to develop a nonlinear ensemble model for hourly water demand forecasting which allow us to estimate uncertainties across different model classes. The concepts was demonstrated through application to observed from water plant (A) in the South Korea. Various statistics (e.g. the efficiency coefficient, the correlation coefficient, the root mean square error, and a maximum error rate) were evaluated to investigate model efficiency. The ensemble based model with an cross-validate prediction procedure showed better predictability for water demand forecasting at different temporal resolutions. In particular, the performance of the ensemble model on hourly water demand data showed promising results against other individual prediction schemes.

Recently, weather information has been increasingly used in various area. This study presents the necessity of hourly weather information for electricity demand forecasting through correlation analysis and multivariate regression model. Hourly weather data were collected by Meteorological Administration. Using electricity demand data, we considered TBATS exponential smoothing model with a sliding window method in order to forecast electricity demand. In this paper, we have shown that the incorporation of weather infromation into electrocity demand models can significantly enhance a forecasting capability.
