Mycelial growth of L. edodes by pretreatments of softwood was studied on a sawdust medium. The sawdust used was from the following softwood species : Larix leptolepis, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis. The pretreatment consisted of cold-water (48 h), hot-water (3 h) and steam extractions (3 h) at a ratio of 500 g : 3,000 mL (sawdust : distilled water). The sawdust medium was a mixture of 76% sawdust, 20% rice bran, 3% glucose, 0.4% potassium nitrate and 0.6% calcium carbonate. Following sawdust pretreatments proved most suitable : L. leptolepis (steam extraction), P. densiflora (hot-water extraction) and P. koraiensis (hot-water extraction). Mycelial growth on P. koraiensis sawdust increased in proportion to an increase in hot-water extraction time. Mycelial growth was optimum on the sawdust extracted for 12 hours, hot-water extraction beyond this period proved unsuitable. With the exception of P. densiflora at 100 ㎍/mL, antifungal activity occurred in every sample. Maximum inhibition of mycelial growth was obtained from following concentration of hot-water extractives : P. densiflora (104 ㎍/mL) and P. koraiensis (104 ㎍/mL). This study has provided useful preliminary information for the cultivation of L. edodes.
Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)(PTT) fiber was pretreated with organic solvent/water solution of various compositions. The organic solvents used in this experiment were benzyl alcohol, n-buthanol, and N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF). Density of the fibers were investigated as a measure of crystallite region. The dye uptake increased in the order of pretreatment with hot water < untreated < 5% benzyl alcohol < 100% benzyl alcohol < 90% benzyl alcohol; hot water < untreated $\risingdotseq$ 5% butanol < 100% beutanol < 90% butanol; hot water $\risingdotseq$ 5% DMF < untreated < 90% DMF < 100% DMF. The dye uptake increases with increase of crystallinity. It seems likely that the recrystallization process during the pretreatment with organic solvent/water solutions leads to an increase in the microvoid and then a large increase in the dye uptake. Also the dyeing rate increased and the dyeing transition temperature decreased with the pretreatments. The results obtained are corresponds with the plasticization of the fiber structure formed during the pretreatrnent.
The microalgae have cellulose as a main structural component of their cell wall and the lignin content in microalgae is much lower than other lignocellulosic biomass. Therefore, fermentable sugar production from microalgae (Tetraselmis KCTC 12236BP) can be carried out under pretreatment without high temperature and high pressure. It was investigated that the effect of hot-water pretreatment using sulfuric acid for lipid extracted algae which is expected to be a next generation biomass. The effects of three major variables including extraction temperature, acid concentration and time on the enzymatic hydrolysis were investigated. Among the tested variables, temperature and acid concentration showed significant effects and optimum pretreatment conditions for the economic operation criteria were obtained as follows: reaction temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, sulfuric acid concentration of 2 mol and pretreatment time of 40 min. Under the optimum conditions of acidic hot water pretreatment, experimentally obtained hydrolysis yield were 95.9% which showed about 2.1 fold higher compared with enzymatic hydrolysis process. Therefore, acid pretreatment under mild condition was proven to be an effective method for fermentable sugar production from lipid extracted microalgae.

This study aimed to increase the sugar and ethanol yield from the mengkuang plant biomass through biological and liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment and their combination. The results showed that biological pretreatments with 5% inoculum of the fungus Trametes versicolor resulted in the highest alpha cellulose content incubated for 30 days, and 10% inoculum resulted in the lowest lignin content. LHW pretreatment decreased the hemicellulose content of pulps from 10.17% to 9.99%. T. versicolor altered the structure of the mengkuang pulp by degrading the lignin and lignocellulose matrix. The resulting delignification and cellulose degradation facilitate the hydrolysis of cellulose into sugars. The alpha cellulose content after biological-LHW pretreatment was higher (78.99%) compared to LHW-biological pretreatment (76.85%). Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that biological-LHW combinated treatment degrades the cell wall structures. The ethanol yield for biological-LHW pretreated sample was observed 43.86% (13.11 g/L ethanol by weight of the substrate, which is much higher than that of LHW-biological pretreatment (34.02%; 9.097 g/L). The highest reducing sugar content about 45.10% was observed with a resulting ethanol content of 15.5 g/L at LHW pretreatment temperature of $180^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.
Anaerobic fermentation was attempted to produce methane from the wood chip (Eucalyptus globulus). By the pretreatment of the wood chip using hot water with high temperature, NaOH, and steam explosion, the production of methane gas was enhanced. The pretreatment using Steam explosion resulted in more amount of methane gas produced than the treatment using either hot water or 1% (w/w) NaOH with high temperature, and the steam explosion at a steam pressure of 25 atm and a steaming time of 3 min was the most effective for the methane production. The amount of methane gas produced depended on the ratio of weight of Klason lignin, a high molecular weight lignin, in the treated wood chip.

Acacia wood (Acacia mangium Willd.) is the most popular fast growing tree species planted in timber estate in Indonesia and is considered to be very valuable raw materials for structural composite products. The objective of the research was to evaluate the properties of OSB prepared from A. Mangium wood with or without immersing the strands to hot water at $80^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. MDI adhesive was used in 3 levels i.e., 3%, 5%, and 7%. The moisture content of strand was 7%. The results indicated that immersing strands in hot water for 2 hours at $80^{\circ}C$ prior to manufacture OSB improved significantly the mechanical peoperties (i.e., MOR and MOE) of OSB. The higher the adhesive content resulted in the better the dimensional stabilisation (i.e., water absorption and thickness swelling) and the mechanical properties (i.e., MOR, MOE and IB) of OSB. OSB prepared from hot-water immersed strands with 5% adhesive content has met all parameters requirement on the JIS A 5908 (2003) standard.
Purpose of this research is deducing optimum pretreatment method of electric arc furnace slag from comparing and investigating the properties of electric arc furnace slag and electric arc furnace slag concrete by existing pretreatment method and surface pretreatment method being used by this research. Besides, as the surface pretreatment method, the method of naturally drying for 6 hours after impregnating with an inorganic type silica solution for 1 day was used. From the results, comparing the hot water treatment method, surface treatment method being used by this research is more effective. Therefore, it is judged that surface treatment method is more effective in the decrease of expansibility of electric arc furnace slag and practical use.
Velvet antler (VA) is a historically traditional medicinal supplement and is well known in Asian countries for its pharmaceutical and health benefits. The objectives for this study were to optimize the hot water extraction (HWE) of VA for the Korean VA industry, and to determine the most effective pretreatment method among microwave (MW), ultrasonication (US), and enzymatic (EZ) techniques. Using response surface methodology, optimum extraction temperatures and times were determined by central composite design configuration based on extraction yield and sialic acid content. Various quality parameters of VA extract including yield, soluble solid, protein, and sialic acid contents were also compared with the conjunction of HWE and pretreatment. The yield and sialic acid content of VA extract were determined to be 40% and 0.73 mg/g, respectively, under an optimum temperature of 100℃ at 24 h of extraction time. The yields from VA extracts pretreated with MW, US, and EZ were 17.42%, 19.73%, and 29.15%, respectively. Among the tested commercial enzymes, pepsin was the most effective proteolytic enzyme and led to the highest yield (47.65%), soluble solids (4.03 °brix), protein (1.12 mg/ml), and sialic acid (3.04 mg/ml) contents from VA extract.

Laver, Porphyra, is distinctive for its high content of proteins and polysaccharides such as porphyran and hemicellulose. The chemical properties of the polysaccharides extracted with different extraction methods such as hot water, dilute acid(pH 4.0) or alkali solution(2N NaOH) were examined to investigate the suitable extraction conditions for porphyran and hemicellulose from laver. For porphyran extraction, dilute acid solution was more preferable to hot water and alkali solution because of its higher 3,6-anhydrogalactose content and lower protein content. However, alkali solution was more suitable to extract the hemicellulose because of higher mannose content indicating the extraction of mannan. To decrease contamination of the polysaccharides with protein, the dried lavers were pretreated with enzymes (Protamex, Flavourzyme, Alcalase, Viscozyme) before hot water extraction. All enzyme pretreatments increased the yield of polysaccharides by compared with control (enzyme unpretreated) and Flavourzyme pretreatment was most effective to decrease protein contamination in the polysaccharide. All viscosities of porphyran solutions pretreated by enzymes were lower compared to the control porphyran solution and showed pseudoplastic behavior with yield stress. In case of alkali extraction of residues obtained after enzyme hydrolysis and hot water extraction, protease pretreatment increased the mannose contents in the polysaccharide while the xylose content was increased by Viscozyme pretreatment.
A comparative study of pretreatment and extraction methods was conducted to investigate their effects on nutritional and bioactive components during hot-water extraction of Acanthopanax senticosus. The herb samples, ground and sifted $(8\~20\;mesh)$ were pretreated with ultrasound (20 kHz), microwave (2,450 MHz) or roasting $(180^{\circ}C)$ for 10 min, and then extracted by a boiling $(180^{\circ}C)$ under atmospheric pressure or a pressured boiling $(121^{\circ}C)$ for 2 hr. In general, the pretreatments improved the extraction efficiency and the DPPH radical scavenging activity of extract. Particularly, the extraction yields of soluble solids, total sugar and phenolic compounds were increased in microwaving methods, and the protein yield and the radical scavenging activity were higher in roosting pretreatment. Yields of soluble solids, total sugar, protein and phenolic compouds in pressured extraction were higher than those in nonpressured extraction. These results suggested that pretreatment including microwave radiation, sonication and roasting and pressured extraction can be utilized for improving the extraction efficiency of A. senticosus.
