  • Under water wet welding is an economically alternative for the repair of offshore structures. In this paper investigations on the fatigue strength of a wet welded pipe structural member have been reported. For the connection a special sleeve patch design has been developed. The joint was fatigue tested. The evaluation of the test was carried out by means of the hot-spot approach with regard to several extrapolation rules of the hot-spot stress. Obtained results have been compared to actual classfication rules and recommendations.

  • The effect of out-of-plane loads on the fatigue strength of welded steel structures is examined through fatigue tests with weldment of two fillet weld joint types. The results of the fatigue tests are compared with those under axial loads, on the basis of the hot spot stress range at the weld toe. From the result of the comparison, a method on how to incorporate the effect of the out-of-plane bending stress is proposed using design S-N curves derived from fatigue tests under the axial load. The proposed method is useful for rational assessment of the fatigue strength of fillet-welded structures, where combined stresses of the in-plane axial stress and the out-of-plane bending stress are induced simultaneously due to the complexity of applied loads and structural geometry.

  • A transient numerical simulation was conducted to have variation of temperature on an element of resistive Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) under quench condition. It is very important engineering information for an optimum design of cryogenic system for cooling of a resistive SFCL element. A bifilar coil for resistive SFCL for 10 MVA system was incorporated as a model in this numerical study. From the numerical simulation result, it was found that the averaged temperature on the shunt and Bi-2212 element at 500 kW, 100 ms was 711.1 K and 198.4 K respectively. The temperature variation with the change of the hot-spot size and time is also obtained. The maximum temperature was continuously increased in all cases until the hot-spot stops at 100ms and it was going down after then. Such as, the details of temperature distribution on the SFCL element obtained from this numerical study and it should be very valuable information on the decision of the cooling capacity of cryogenic system.

  • We have found cool homopause temperatures (Kim et al. 2016) of 180 - 250 K for the 8-micron North Polar Hot Spot (8NPHS) of Jupiter, which has been observed to be stationary at 180 deg (SysIII) longitude since the early 1980s. The 3-micron spectro-images of Jupiter that we analyzed were obtained with GNIRS, Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph at Gemini North on January 13, 2013(UT), and at $8{\mu}m$ on Feburary 6, 2013(UT) with TEXES, the Texas Echelon Cross Echelle Spectrograph at the NASA IRTF. The cool homopause was unexpected, and a possible implication of the relatively cool 8NPHS homopause compared with those of other auroral regions will be presented.

  • Variation of decision variables for optimal remediation using the pump-and-treat method is examined to estimate the effect of the degree of concentration constraint. Simulation-optimization method using genetic algorithm is applied to minimize the total pumping volume. In total volume minimization strategy, the remediation time increases rapidly prior to significant increase in pumping rates. When the concentration constraint is set severer, the more wells are required and the well on the down-gradient direction from the plume hot-spot gives more efficient remediation performance than that on the hot-spot position. These results show that the more profitable strategy for remediation can be achieved by increasing the required remediation time than raising the pumping rate until the time reaches a certain limitation level. So, the remediation time has to be considered as one of the essential decision variables fer optimal remediation design.

정적상태에서의 표면온도는 Block(1937)과 Jaeger(1942)에 의해 이론적으로 소개하였다.

  • This is a partial report of the investigation of fatigue behaviour of hollow section T-joints with circular brace members and rectangular chord members (CRHS). Hot spot stresses and the stress concentration factors (SCFs) were determined experimentally. Fatigue testing was carried out under constant amplitude loading in air. The experimental SCF values for CRHS joints were found to be below those of circular-to-circular (CCHS) and rectangular-to-rectangular (RRHS) hollow section joints. The fatigue strength referred to experimental hot spot stress was in reasonably good agreement with current fatigue design codes for tubular joints.

  • The PV modules are affected by heat. The hotter the PV module, the lower the power output, then the life time will be short. If the cell temperature rises above a certain limit the encapsulating materials can be damaged, and this will degrade the performance of the PV module. This is called the ‘hot spot’ formation. This paper presents that the PV module temperature can be estimated by using a thermal analysis program, and demonstrates the thermal characteristics of the PV module.

  • Stainless steel sheets are widely used as the structural material for the railroad cars and the commercial vehicles. These kinds of structures used stainless steel sheets are commonly fabricated by using the gas welding. For fatigue design of gas welded joints such as fillet and plug type joint, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of gas welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of gas welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. Thus, in this paper, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were obtained by fatigue tests. Using these results, ${\Delta}P-N_f$ curves were rearranged in the. ${\Delta}{\sigma}-N_f$ relation with the hot spot stresses at the gas welded joints.

  • This study introduces a fatigue assessment procedure using mesh-insensitive structural stress method based on the Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers by considering important factors, such as mean stress and thickness effects. The fatigue assessment result of mesh-insensitive structural stress method have been compared with CSR procedure based on equivalent notch stress at major hot spot points in the area near the ballast hold for a 180 K bulk carrier. The possibility of implementing mesh-insensitive structural stress method in the fatigue assessment procedure for ship structures is discussed.
