Thermoelectric Properties of Skutterudite FexCo4-xSb12 Synthesized by Mechanical Alloying Process (기계적 합금화에 의한 Skutterudite계 FexCo4-xSb12의 합성 및 열전특성)

  • Fe-doped skutterudite $CoSb_3$ with a nominal composition of $Fe_{x}Co_{4-x}Sb_{12}(0\;{\le}\;x\;{\le}\;2.5)$ has been synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental powders, followed by hot pressing. Phase transformations during mechanical alloying and hot pressing were systematically investigated using XRD. Single phase skutterudite was successfully produced by vacuum hot pressing using as-milled powders without subsequent annealing. However, second phase in the form of marcasite structure $FeSb_2$ was found to exist in case of $x\;{\ge}\;2$, suggesting the solubility limit of Fe with Co in this system. Thermoelectric properties as functions of temperature and Fe contents were evaluated for the hot pressed specimens. Fe substitution up to x=1.5 with Co in $Fe_{x}Co_{4-x}Sb_{12}$ appeared to increase thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) and the maximum ZT was found to be 0.78 at 525K in this study.

  • Powder metallurgy has been employed for the development of SiC particle reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites by means of hot isotropic pressing and vacuum hot pressing. A material model based on micro-mechanical approach then has been presented for the processes. Densification occurs by the inelastic flow of matrix materials during the consolidation, and consequently it depends on many process conditions such as applied pressure, temperature and volume fraction of reinforcement. The model is implemented into finite element software so that the process simulation can be performed enabling the predicted relative density to be compared with experimental data. In order to determine the performance of finished products, further tensile test has been conducted using the developed specimens. The effect of internal void of the materials on mechanical properties therefore can be investigated.

Fabrication of $Si_3N_4-SiC$ Nanocomposites by Hot Pressing (Hot Pressing에 의한 $Si_3N_4-SiC$ 나노복합체의 제조)

  • SiC ultrafine particles of 1, 10, 20 and 30 vol% were dispersed in $\alpha$-Si3N4 matrix and hot-pressed under the condition of 30 MPa at 1800 and 190$0^{\circ}C$ respectively. Physical, mechanical properties and microstructures of sintered Si3N4-SiC nanocomposites were investigated. Flexural strength and density of Si3N4-10 vol% SiC nanocomposites hot-pressed at 190$0^{\circ}C$ represented the 1002 MPa and 97.9%T.D respectively, and it was confirmed as a remarkable improvement of 67% compared to Si3N4 monolith. Fracture toughness was shown as 7.2 MPa.m1/2 when the same composition was hot pressed at 180$0^{\circ}C$. This effect was supposed to be due to the improvement of microstructure by the adequate suppression of the excessive growth of Si3N4 grain with SiC nano-particles.

  • $Bi_{2}Te_{3}-Sb_{2}Te_{3}$, $Bi_{2}Te_{3}-Bi_{2}Se_{3}$ solid solutions are of great interest as materials for thermoelectric energy conversion. One of the key technologies to ensure the efficiency of thermoelectric device is to obtain chemically homogeneous solid solutions. In this work, the new process with rapid solidification followed by hot pressing was investigated to produce homogeneous thermoelectric materials. Characteristics of the materials were examined with XRD, SEM, EPMA-line scan and bending test. Property variations of the materials were investigated as a function of variables, such as excess Te quantity and hot pressing temperature. Quenched ribbons are very brittle and consisted of homogeneous $Bi_{2}Te_{3}$, $Sb_{2}Te_{3}$ solid solutions. When the process parameters were optimized, the maximum figure of merit was 3.073$\times$$10^{-3}K^{-4}$. The bending strength of the material, hot pressed at 45$0^{\circ}C$, was 5.87 kgf/${mm}^2$.

  • The high TcY1Ba2Cu3Ox superconductor has recently gained widespread interest in the scientific community. The principal problems at the present time are how to densify this material and how to raise the critical current density. To date the majority of samples have had densities of 90%(of theoretical) or less. In this study we report that we obtained density of 96% by Hot-Pressing method.

Fabrication and Characterization of Alumina Matrix Composites Reinforced with SiC whiskers

  • Alumina matrix composites reinforced with up to 20vol% of aligned SiC whiskers were fabricated by tape casting and hot pressing. Alumina composited with randomly distribution SiC whiskers were also fabricated in order to investigate the effect of whisker alignment on properties of the composites. XRD and optical microscopy were used to examine the whisker orientation. The fracture toughness increased with increasing whisker content, and it was higher in the direction normal to the tape casting direction.

  • The Hot Stamping process, which is the hot pressing of steel parts using cold dies. can utilize both case of shaping and high strength due to the hardening effect of rapid quenching during the pressing. We carried out experiments of quenching rate and tempering treatments at temperatures of $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ and different soaking times. Tn this study, the mechanical properties and microstructure of micro boron alloyed steels after heat treatments are compared.

  • A Abstract Systematic studies of the effects of crystalline forms of starting powders and p processing variables on the texture of hot - pressed silicon carbide are described. The results I indicate that hot - pressing of $\beta$ - SiC can produce strong textures and composite type duplex microstructure due to the ${\beta} {\rightarrow} {\alpha}$ phase transformation of SiC. The texture variations d during post - annealing have been observed. In the case of using a - SiC as starting pow¬d ders, the degree of preferred orientation by hot - pressing is relatively weak.

  • FeAl matrix composite was fabricated successfully by hot-pressing. The mechanical properties of FeAl alloys have been widely studies, but their behaviors of surface hardening effect by plasma nitriding has not yet been studied. This study was to analysis the relationship between microstructure of the sintered composite by hot-pressing and surface hardening at plasma nitriding treatment. Surface hardening of FeAl base alloys was improved by plasma nitriding with increasing plasma treatment time. Excellent surface hardness in the FeAl alloys could be obtained by plasma nitriding($\textrm{H}_{\textrm{v}}$ 100gf, diffusion layer: 1100~1450kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$, matrix : 330~360kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$). Diffusion layer size increased with increasing plasma nitriding times and decreased with increasing Sic, content.
