  • Due to the increasing interest in SNPs and mutational hot spots for disease traits, it is becoming more important to define and understand the relationship between SNPs and their flanking sequences. To study the effects of flanking sequences on SNPs, statistical approaches are necessary to assess bias in SNP data. In this study we mainly applied Markov chains for SNP sequences, particularly those located in intronic regions, and for analysis of in-del data. All of the pertaining sequences showed a significant tendency to generate particular SNP types. Most sequences flanking SNPs had lower complexities than average sequences, and some of them were associated with microsatellites. Moreover, many Alu repeats were found in the flanking sequences. We observed an elevated frequency of single-base-pair repeat-like sequences, mirror repeats, and palindromes in the SNP flanking sequence data. Alu repeats are hypothesized to be associated with C-to-T transition mutations or A-to-I RNA editing. In particular, the in-del data revealed an association between particular changes such as palindromes or mirror repeats. Results indicate that the mechanism of induction of in-del transitions is probably very different from that which is responsible for other SNPs. From a statistical perspective, frequent DNA lesions in some regions probably have effects on the occurrence of SNPs.

  • This study presents an experimental investigation of the effect of the wake on mass transfer about a circular cylinder in crossflow. The flat-plate wake was generated by merging two mirror images of turbulent boundary layers that were well developed along the both sides of flat plate with a sharp trailing edge. The velocity field was measured by a hot-wire system and the mass transfer rate by a naphthalene sublimation method. The mixing and developing stages of the wake were addressed to identify flow conditions. The mass transfer effects of different developing stages of the wake was discussed in detail. It is noted that a local maximum appears not at the front stagnation point but at a point a little downstream when the cylinder is located in the nearwake region and much more elevated mass transfer rate is obtained compared to effect of free-stream turbulence.

  • With increases in recent security requirements, biometric technology such as fingerprints, faces and iris recognitions have been widely used in many applications including door access control, personal authentication for computers, internet banking, automatic teller machines and border-crossing controls. Finger vein recognition uses the unique patterns of finger veins in order to identify individuals at a high level of accuracy. This paper proposes new device and methods for touchless finger vein recognition. This research presents the following five advantages compared to previous works. First, by using a minimal guiding structure for the finger tip, side and the back of finger, we were able to obtain touchless finger vein images without causing much inconvenience to user. Second, by using a hot mirror, which was slanted at the angle of 45 degrees in front of the camera, we were able to reduce the depth of the capturing device. Consequently, it would be possible to use the device in many applications having size limitations such as mobile phones. Third, we used the holistic texture information of the finger veins based on a LBP (Local Binary Pattern) without needing to extract accurate finger vein regions. By using this method, we were able to reduce the effect of non-uniform illumination including shaded and highly saturated areas. Fourth, we enhanced recognition performance by excluding non-finger vein regions. Fifth, when matching the extracted finger vein code with the enrolled one, by using the bit-shift in both the horizontal and vertical directions, we could reduce the authentic variations caused by the translation and rotation of finger. Experimental results showed that the EER (Equal Error Rate) was 0.07423% and the total processing time was 91.4ms.

  • Recently, many researches about making more comfortable input device based on gaze detection technology have been done in human computer interface. However, the system cost becomes high due to the complicated hardware and there is difficulty to use the gaze detection system due to the complicated user calibration procedure. In this paper, we propose a new gaze detection method based on the 2D analysis and a simple user calibration. Our method used a small USB (Universal Serial Bus) camera attached on a HMD (Head-Mounted Display), hot-mirror and IR (Infra-Red) light illuminator. Because the HMD is moved according to user's facial movement, we can implement the gaze detection system of which performance is not affected by facial movement. In addition, we apply our gaze detection system to 3D first person shooting game. From that, the gaze direction of game character is controlled by our gaze detection method and it can target the enemy character and shoot, which can increase the immersion and interest of game. Experimental results showed that the game and gaze detection system could be operated at real-time speed in one desktop computer and we could obtain the gaze detection accuracy of 0.88 degrees. In addition, we could know our gaze detection technology could replace the conventional mouse in the 3D first person shooting game.

  • How to measure the creepage distance of an insulator quickly and accurately is a problem for the power industry at present, and the noticeable concern is that the high voltage insulation equipment cannot be measured online in the charged state. In view of this situation, we develop an on-line measurement system of creepage distance for high voltage insulators based on binocular stereo vision. We have proposed a method of generating linear structured light using a conical off-axis mirror. The feasibility and effect of two ways to solve the interference problem of strong sunlight have been discussed, one way is to use bandpass filters to enhance the contrast ratio of linear structured light in the images, and the other way is to process the images with adaptive threshold segmentation and feature point extraction. After the system is calibrated, we tested the measurement error of the on-line measurement system with a composite insulator sample. Experimental results show that the maximum relative error is 1.45% and the average relative error is 0.69%, which satisfies the task requirement of not more than 5% of the maximum relative error.

  • This study evaluated the effect of aspect ratio of an enclosure with a heated inner circular cylinder on three-dimensional natural convection. The immersed boundary method was used to model the inner circular cylinder based on the finite volume method. The Rayleigh number was varied between $10^5$ and $10^6$, and the Prandtl number was maintained at 0.7. The aspect ratio of the three-dimensional enclosure was changed in steps of 1 within a range of 1-4 by increasing the width of the enclosure. In this study, the flow and thermal fields in the enclosure reached the steady state, and showed a mirror-symmetric pattern with respect to the center plane (x=0). In addition, the surface-averaged Nusselt number of the inner circular cylinder increased, while the total surface-averaged Nusselt number of the enclosure walls decreased with increase in the aspect ratio of the enclosure.

  • This study was carried out on the crack healing of three types of SiC ceramics based on a $SiO_2$ additive, taking into account the roughness of the polishing plate used for polishing the specimens. The mixtures were subsequently hot-pressed in $N_2$ gas for one hour under 35 MPa at 2053 K. In these specimens, the optimized crack-healing condition was 1373 K for one hour in air. The crack-healing material of the cracked part was the glassy phase of $SiO_2$ that was formed by the oxidation of SiC. In the optimum healing condition, the bending strength of non-polished SiC ceramics was not completely recovered. However, the bending strength of the SAY specimen was excellent, considering the economic aspects of SAY, SAYS-1, and SAYS-2. The SAY specimen is definitely superior to the others after an hour of heat treatment. There was a decrease in the number and size of defects in the specimen polished by using a $125-{\mu}m$ polishing plate; however, the micro-surface defects were not completely repaired. The specimen polished by using a 40-${\mu}m$ polishing plate showed little voids or surface defects after an hour of heat treatment. The bending strength of the specimen mirror-polished by using a 6-${\mu}m$ polishing plate was completely recovered.
