  • A field experiment was conducted in the arid interior of British Columbia, Canada to assess the seasonal soil temperature and moisture regimes in an American ginseng garden. As a consequence of the man-modified microclimate (elevated shade canopy and surface covering of mulch), the growing environment of the crop was fundamentally altered when compared to adjacent agricultural growing environments. In the ginseng garden, soil temperatures were found to remain low throughout the growing season whereas soil moisture remained high when compared with the outside garden environment. These results indicate that even in the hot, arid environment of the interior of British Columbia, the growing of ginseng is undertaken in sub-optimal conditions for the major part of the growing season. This poses challenges for the producers of the crop to modify the architecture of the gardens to enhance the soil regime without creating a deleterious aerial environment.

  • During summer season, the weather condition of Korea is hot and humid. So humidity elements are very important relating to building envelope condition. The purpose of this investigation is to measure and analyze characteristics of summer's environmental elements such as relative humidity, dry bulb temperature and air velocity in the clay/cement envelope materials using a granite dome model. According to the variation of exterior humidity, the state of interior relative humidity for clay model has an equal tendency, although a little range of variation is shown in comparison to the cement model.

  • Seongjeonggak Hall in Changdeokgung Palace, although built after the Japanese Invasion in 1592, displays the architectural style and structure of Early Joseon period. It did not include ondol (Korean floor heating system) and contained Early Joseon style window frames. Later, King Jeongjo installed ondol as he repaired the building into a more convenient office. The initial construction of Seongjeonggak Hall was based on the architectural ideology of the Early Joseon Period, which divided up the space according to the season. Thus, the initial structure of the building consisted of a joint of a one-story building and a two-story building with the top floor of the latter specialized for hot and humid season. The two-story building was called 'chimnu(寢樓)', and its top floor was called 'nu-chimsil(樓寢室)'.

  • CFD analysis was performed to analyze the temperature distribution of the inner space of the curing house according to blocking the opening of the gang-form with a tent in case of concrete pouring and heat curing of the apartment house during the winter season. If the gang-form opening is closed with a tent during internal heating using a hot air blower in the winter, the internal temperature rises compared to the non-reserved due to air-tightness of the curing spaces, and uniform temperature distribution can be ensured. In addition, it is possible to increase curing efficiency by reducing the amount of heat supplied and shortening the heating time.

  • Studies were made by measuring number of bacteria, water content, acidity and sugar content on spoiling at different kinds of containers in Summer season, to determine better kinds of containers adoptable for storing cooked rice being the most important food for Korean. It was found that brass, aluminum and porcelain containeres are not recommendable, whereas wooden containers such as a bamboo case (Sokori), a wooden box and a gourd pitcher (Bakaji) are quite useful for at least 24 hour storage even in hot Summer time.

  • The dominant colour - types of fundatrices of green peach aphid, Myzsts persicae 5. were yellow - green, red and green. Yellow type was the minority among nymphs produced by field collected alatae. Rate of producing dead nymphs was over 34.0% in red and yellow types apterae grown from tobacco plants in early summer. Brown and green were the dominant colour - type in apterae throughout tobacco growing season. Brown type on tobacco, and yellow type on hot pepper and tomato grew better and produced more nymphs than other colour - types.

  • Due to the electric power shortage in summer season and regulation of freon refrigerant, the application of gas absorption refrigeration and hot water systems are considerably increasing trend. But, this system consists of condenser, heat exchanger, supply pipe and radiator etc. which are easily corroded by acidity and dissolved oxygen and gases. In result, this system occurs scale attachment and corrosion damage like pitting and crevice corrosion. In this study, electrochemical polarization test of heat exchanger tubing material (copper, aluminium brass, 30% cupronickel(30% Cu-Ni)) was carried out in 60% lithium bromide solution at $95^{\circ}C$. As a result of polarization test, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and local corrosion. such as galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion behavior, of tubing materials was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pitting and crevice corrosion control of 30% cupronickel in 60% LiBr solution at $95^{\circ}C$ is very excellent. (2) Dissimilar metal corrosion of 30% cupronickel coupling to aluminium bronze is the most sensitive. (3) Current density behavior of tube materials by impressed potential is high in order of copper > aluminium brass > 30% cupronickel.

  • This paper shows how weather derivatives can be used to hedge against the price risk and volume risk of purchasing relatively large amounts of electricity. Our specific approach to designing new contracts for electricity is to focus on the return over a summer season rather than on the daily levels of demand and price. It is shown that correct market signals can be preserved in a contract and the associated financial risk can be offset by weather options. The advantage of combining a forward contract with a weather derivative is that the high prices on hot days or when the temperature is high reflect the underlying high cost of producing power when the load is high and that the combined contract with a weather derivative substantially reduces the volatility of the return.
