  • Extensive width reduction of slabs is an important technology to achieve continuous production between the steelmaking and hot rolling processes. Conventionally, a vertical roll process has been used to achieve extensive width reduction. However, it is impossible to avoid the defects such as dog-bone, fish tail and camber. The deformation behavior in the width sizing process is more favorable than that in conventional vertical rolling edger, i.e. the material better flows toward the center of slab. This study is carried out to investigate the deformation of slab by two-step sizing press. The FE-simulation is utilized to predict plastic deformation mode in compression by a sizing press of slabs far hot rolling. In this paper, the various causes of the asymmetrical rolling phenomena are mentioned for the purpose of understanding of rolling conditions. Analytical results of slab-deformation by sizing press are presented below in this study.

  • When hot strip is trimmed in the side trimming process at the entry side of tandem cold rolling mill, due to bad quality of trimming face and burr, product quality(saw ear)becomes so bad that it causes drop of yield and claim from customers. Therefore, it was examined that applying ultrasonic vibration is an effective method to improve quality of strip trimming face and decrease burr magnitude by decreasing shear force acting between strip trimming face and knife in side trimming process of cold rolling.

  • A set of approaches suggested to control the eccentricity is discussed in this paper. Among these, filter-integrator method is used to design the controller, which also includes the input signal synchronization, stabilizing filter and eccentricity source discrimination. Using the S/W that is coded for real time application of that controller, we simulated the operations of that one. The simulation results show the characteristics of eccentricity compensation and eccentricity discrimination. However, from these results, we can see that only proper stabilization strategy certificates the safe eccentricity control.

  • An integrated finite element computer simulator is presented for the prediction of three dimensional heat transfer and metal flow occurring in the strip, and heat transfer and thermo elastic phenomena occurring in the rolls in 4 high mill hot strip rolling. Basic finite element models are described, with emphasis on combining each model to deal rigorously with the coupled aspect of the thermo-mechanical behaviors of the rols and strip through an iterative solution procedure. A series of process simulation are carried out to investigate the effect of various parameters under the actual process conditions. The results are shown and discussed.

  • In the cold rolling mill, it is very important that a constrained static flow stress of rolled strip and rolling force calculation model be exactly considered to improve an prediction accuracy for rolling forces. Therefore, in this study, the values of the constrained static flow stress are used by deriving the regression equation which is a function of rolling conditions(FDT, CT) and chemical compositions(C, Si, Mn), previously applied by making the tables of yield strength for hot coils with size. And with the consideration that an elastic deformation part of an rolled strip appears at the entry and delivery side of the contacting area between the work roll and rolled strip is calculated. By applying these methods, the more accurate prediction for rolling force is obtained. As a results, the deviation of thickness is significantly reduced in the rolling direction.

  • This paper deals with a design problem of a decentralized controller with a strongly connected two-input two-output multivariable system. To this end, we present a classical design approach which consists of two main steps: one is to decompose the multivariable plant into two single-input single-output systems by means of the Individual Channel Design (ICD) concept, the other is to design controller of each channel by the Coefficient Diagram Method (CDM) so that it satisfies, especially, time domain specifications such as settling time, overshoot etc.. A design procedure was proposed and then was applied to a 2$\times$2 hot rolling mill plant. Simulation results showed that the proposed method has excellent control performances.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of alloying and rolling condition on the mechanical properties and to develop high strength line pipe steels with good toughness. Tests were carried out by the laboratory experiments followed by mill trials and mass production. It was found that a small addition of microalloying elements, such as Nb, V with Mo or Ti remarkably increased the strength and toughness of hot strips. The optimum condition of thermomechanical rolling on low carbon microalloyed steel improved the toughness through the formation of a fine and uniform microstructure. Based on this mill trials following the fundamental research, the production technology of line pipe steels, grade X70∼X100 with high toughness, has been established. These grade steels exhibit excellent low temperature toughness (vTs= under -80$^{\circ}C$) and sufficient strength in both the base metal and the ERW seam weld position, respectively.

  • In hot strip rolling, sound prediction of the temperature of the strip is vital for achieving the desired finishing mill draft temperature (FDT). In this paper, a precision on-line model for the prediction of temperature distributions along the thickness of the strip in the finishing mill is presented. The model consists of an analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the inter-stand zone, and a semi-analytic model for the prediction of temperature distributions in the bite zone in which thermal boundary conditions as well as heat generation due to deformation are predicted by finite element-based, approximate models. The prediction accuracy of the proposed model is examined through comparison with predictions from a finite element process model.

  • 유한요소법을 통하여 유성압연기에 의한 스테인리스 강관 압연공정을 연구하였다. 3개의 롤에 의한 만네스만 공법을 압연공정에 적용하였다. 보통 유성압연은 냉간가공으로 시작하여 열간가공으로 종료되며, 기존의 압출공정에 비해 공정단축과 생산비절감의 장점을 갖고 있다. 압연공정은 다양하고 복합적인 공정변수를 가지고 있으며, 각각의 변수들은 성형결과에 영향을 미친다. 따라서 유성압연의 다양한 공정변수가 해석에 고려되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 스테인리스 강관성형의 가능성과 생산성을 검토하였고, 소재예열 및 자전속도, 제품두께 변화를 해석에 반영하였다. 스테인리스 강관 압연공정은 성공적으로 시뮬레이션 되었고 최적의 압연조건을 결정하는데 유용할 것이다.

A Self-Tuning PI Control System Design for the Flatness of Hot Strip in Finishing Mill Processes

  • A novel flatness sensing system which is called the Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper(FlatSIL) system is suggested and a self-tuning PI control system using the FlatSIL is designed for improving the flatness of hot strip in finishing mill processes. The FlatSIL system measures the tension along the direction of the strip width by using segmented rolls, and the tension profile is approximated through the tension of each segmented roll. The flatness control system is operated by using the tension profile. The proposed flatness control system as far as the tension profile-measuring device works for the full strip length during the strip rolling in finishing mills. The generalized minimum variance self-tuning (GMV S-T) PI control method is applied to control the flatness of hot strip which has a design parameter as weighting factor for updating the PI gains. Optimizing the design parameter in the GMV S-T PI controller, the Robbins-Monro algorithm is used. It is shown by the computer simulation and experiment that the proposed GMV S-T PI flatness control system has better performance than the fixed PI flatness control system.
