  • Several methods for electrode fabrication of phosphoric acid fuel cell(PAFC) have been studied. The conventional methods that include a coating method and a rolling method, have disadvantages of a very complicated drying process and a hot pressing process for making a large electrode. In this study, to solve these problems, the mixing method of coating and rolling processes has been developed. In the mixing method, the electrode was coated on the electrode support and, after drying the coated layer, was rolled at room temperature and then sintered at $350^{\circ}C$. The single cell performances of the electrodes fabricated by several methods were examined and the mixing method appeared a good cell performance of 0.65 V, $260\;mA/cm^2$. Also the single cell with an area of $2000\;cm^2$ was manufactured and its performance attained 0.593 V, 300 A.

  • This paper presents an investigation of the effect of inclined stiffeners on the load-carrying capacity of simply-supported hot-rolled steel I-beams under various load conditions. The study is carried out using finite element analysis. A series of beams modeled using 3-D solid finite elements with consideration of initial geometric imperfections, residual stresses, and material nonlinearity are analyzed with and without inclined stiffeners to show how the application of inclined stiffeners can offer a noticeable increase in their lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) capacity. The analysis results have shown that the amount of increase in LTB capacity is primarily dependent on the location of the inclined stiffeners and the lateral unsupported length of the beam. The width, thickness and inclination angle of the stiffeners do not have as much an effect on the beam's lateral-torsional buckling capacity when compared to the stiffeners' location and beam length. Once the optimal location for the stiffeners is determined, parametric studies are performed for different beam lengths and load cases and a design equation is developed for the design of such stiffeners. A design example is given to demonstrate how the proposed equation can be used for the design of inclined stiffeners not only to enhance the beam's bearing capacity but its lateral-torsional buckling strength.

  • The HR Plates made hot rolled coils is lower than general structural steel plates in price. No difference between general steel plates and HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm are found in most characters such as cutting operation, fabrication and even welding. It can be concluded that HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm can be applied to flanges and webs of any girders as well as longitudinal ribs, longitudinal and vertical stiffeners of steel bridges appropriately. To increase the demand of HR Plates with thickness up to 22mm, it is necessary that HR Plates is applicable to full member in steel bridge including main girder. In this study, availabilities of the narrow steel box girder of light railway transit with HR Plate width as a main member are discussed. For application of HR Plate to steel bridge with 50m span or more, new support systems in three types are presented. Computational analysis is performed in 15 bridge models of light railway transit with beam element and plate element. As a analysis results, three models in light railway transit are presented. We finally come to the conclusion that HR Plates can be apply to narrow steel box girder in the light railway transit.

  • We have developed the hybrid prototype load cell structures. These developed load cell structures may increase the reliability of the load sensing by deriving the load values through the double sensing method through the vertical maximum deflection and bending stress of the simple beams. For this purpose, the structure design was performed so that the load value, the deflection and stress value could be output to the same value through the optimal structure design. The structurally designed dimensions reaffirmed the accuracy of the design through the structural analysis program and the matching of the load value and the deflection value. Based on the designed structural dimension, the prototype form was constructed through laser cutting and production using hot rolled steel materials. The developed prototype load cell structure can be used as good educational material in various subjects such as material mechanics, steel structure design, measurement engineering, and mechatronics engineering. It is also believed that the measurement system ideas can inform the occurrence of errors in the event of a problem, and if a major accident caused by a sensing error is predicted, it will show good utilization to prevent accidents.

  • Shear connectors are key elements that ensure integrity in a composite system. The primary purpose of a shear connector is to bring a high degree of interaction between composite elements. A wide variety of connectors are available for hot-rolled composite construction, connected to the beam through welding. However, with cold-formed members being very thin, welding of shear connectors is not desirable in cold-formed composite constructions. Shear connectors for cold-formed elements are limited in studies as well as in the market. Hence in this study, three different types of shear connectors, namely, single-channel, double channel, and self-tapping screw, were considered, and their performance assessed by the Push-out test as per Eurocode 4. The connection between channel shear connectors and the beam was made using self-tapping screws to avoid welding. The performance of the connectors was analyzed based on their ultimate capacity, characteristic capacity, ductility, and slippage during loading. Strength to weight ratio was also carried out to understand the proposed connectors' suitability for conventional ones. The results showed relatively higher initial stiffness and ductility for double channel connectors than other connectors. Also, self-tapping screws had a higher strength to weight ratio with low ductility.

  • Purpose - This study reviews changes in the steel export-import structure between Korea and Japan to strengthen the competitive advantage of the Korea Steel industry using a trade-related index. Design/methodology - This study focuses on analyzing comparative advantage based on the trade intensity index (TII), revealed comparative advantage index (RCA), and trade specialization index (TSI). Findings - Korea's steel import from Japan increased due to the domestic supply shortage of HR (Hot Rolled Coil) and Plate, rather than the sharp decline of the domestic steel industry's competitiveness in 2010. However, after the completion of Hyundai Steel's blast furnace, the Korea Steel industry solved the supply shortage. Additionally, the import of Japanese steel products had decreased significantly from 2009 to 2019. Originality/value - This study attempts to analyze Japanese steel products' competitiveness in trade and the domestic influence of high-quality Japanese steel products. These results are connected to domestic steel supply and demand structure and relations with the Japanese steel industry. After completing Hyundai Steel's blast furnace, the Korea Steel industry solved the supply shortage, and the import of Japanese steel products has decreased significantly from 2009 to 2019.

  • Bridge fire hazard has become a growing concern over the last decade due to the rapid increase of ground transportation of hazardous materials and resulting fire incidents. The lack of fire safety provisions in steel bridges can be a significant issue owing steel thermal properties that lead to fast degradation of steel properties at elevated temperatures. Alternatively, the development of composite action between steel girders and concrete decks can increase the fire resistance of steel bridges and meet fire safety requirements in some applications. This paper reviews the fire problem in steel bridges and the fire behavior of composite steel-concrete bridge girders. A numerical model is developed to trace the fire response of a typical bridge girder and is validated using measurements from fire tests. The selected bridge girder is composed by a hot rolled steel section strengthened with bearing stiffeners at midspan and supports. A concrete slab sitting on the top of the girder is connected to the slab through shear studs to provide full composite action. The validated numerical model was used to investigate the fire resistance of real scale bridge girders and the effect of the composite action under different scenarios (standard and hydrocarbon fires). Results showed that composite action can significantly increase the fire resistance of steel bridge girders. Besides, fire severity played an important role in the fire behavior of composite girders and both factors should be taken into consideration in the design of steel bridges for fire safety.

  • Built-up Double-I (BD-I) columns have been commonly used for mid-rise steel-frame structures in Iran. These columns consist of two hot rolled IPE sections which are connected by two cover plates and fillet welds. Until 2017, BD-I columns were employed in intermediate moment resisting frames (MRF) using welded flange plate (WFP) connections. To evaluate the seismic behavior of the connections, four samples were made and tested based on cyclic loading according to AISC 341-16. It was concluded that typical samples cannot satisfy the seismic provisions related to intermediate MRFs. In contrast, the proposed connections retrofitted with two-part external diaphragms were able to satisfy not only the seismic requirements related to intermediate MRFs but also those related to special MRFs according to AISC. The numerical modeling of these samples was performed using ABAQUS finite element software. This study compared the hysteresis moment-rotation curves, plastic strains, and behavior modes in both experimental samples and numerical models.

  • This study is performed for investigating the effects of stripping and counter punching forces on shearing characteristics in fine blanking of T-shaped products, such as camber, burr-height and dimensional accuracy, etc by experiments. Conventional hydraulic press is used for experiments so that both the stripping force and counter punching force can be arbitrarily adjusted by another hydraulic unit connected to the fine blanking die. Specimens are selected as hot rolled steel sheet and carbon steel sheet commonly used in auto- mobile company. Based on the experimental results, both the dimensional accuracy and the burr height are not influenced by the stripping and counter punching forces, wherease the camber height representing dish- shaped deflection is much influenced by them, it can be seen through this study that the finely cut surface of T-shaped blank can be obtained even in conventional hydraulic press if additional equipments and specially designed die are employed.

  • This study presents similarities and differences between Turkish Building Code for Steel Structures, which are TS 648 and SDCCSS (Specification for Design, Calculation and Construction of Steel Structures) in terms of the design of the members. Hot-rolled I-shaped steel sections for symmetrical and U-shaped steel sections (i.e., channels) for monosymmetric sections were elaborated in detail. The design strength of tension members under tensile load, compression members under axial load and flexural members under flexure and shear were examined separately. Connection details for tension members, slenderness for compression members and distance between lateral supports for flexural members were considered as prime variables. Analysis results revealed the design strength of the tension members where at least one of the cross-sectional parts is not connected to the connection plates, I-shaped compression members where a slenderness ratio is below 39 (𝛌<39), U-shaped compression members and flexural members where Lb is between Lp and Lr (Lpb≤Lr) designed based on TS 648 are greater than those designed based on SDCCSS 2018. Strength differences between the specification can reach 79% for tensile members, 13% for compression members and 9% for flexural members.
