  • Nand flash memory requires an Erase-Before-Write operation structurally. In order to solve this problem, it can be solved by classifying a page (hot data page) where data update operation occurs frequently and storing it in a separate block. The MHF (Multi Hash Function Framework) technique records the frequency of data update requests in the system memory, and when the recorded value exceeds a certain standard, the data update request is judged as hot data. However, the method of simply counting only the frequency of the data update request has a limit in judging it as accurate hot data. In addition, in the case of a technique that determines the persistence of a data update request, the fact of the update request is recorded sequentially based on a time interval and then judged as hot data. In the case of such a persistence-based method, its implementation and operation are complicated, and there is a problem of inaccurate judgment if frequency is not considered in the update request. This paper proposes a lightweight hot data determination technique that considers both frequency and persistence in data update requests.

  • Recently, NAND flash memory, which is used as a storage medium, is replacing HDD (Hard Disk Drive) at a high speed due to various advantages such as fast access speed, low power, and easy portability. In order to apply NAND flash memory to a computer system, a Flash Translation Layer (FTL) is indispensably required. FTL provides a number of features such as address mapping, garbage collection, wear leveling, and hot data identification. In particular, hot data identification is an algorithm that identifies specific pages where data updates frequently occur. Hot data identification helps to improve overall performance by identifying and managing hot data separately. MHF (Multi hash framework) technique, known as hot data identification technique, records the number of write operations in memory. The recorded value is evaluated and judged as hot data. However, the method of counting the number of times in a write request is not enough to judge a page as a hot data page. In this paper, we propose hot data identification which considers not only the number of write requests but also the persistence of write requests.

  • In this paper, we propose a Small Active Command scheme which reduces the power consumption of the command bus to DRAM. To do this, we target the ACTIVE command, which consists of multiple packets, containing the row address that occupies the largest size among the addresses delivered to the DRAM. The proposed scheme identifies frequently referenced row addresses as Hot pages first, and delivers index numbers of small caches (tables) located in the memory controller and DRAM. I-ACTIVE and I-PRECHARGE commands using unused bits of existing DRAM commands are added for index number transfer and cache synchronization management. Experimental results show that the proposed method reduces the command bus power consumption by 20% and 8.1% on average in the close-page and open-page policies, respectively.

  • Hard disks, which have long been used as secondary storage in computing systems, are increasingly being replaced by solid state drives (SSDs), due to their relatively fast data input / output speeds and small, light weight. SSDs that use NAND flash memory as a storage medium are significantly different from hard disks in terms of physical operation and internal operation. In particular, there is a feature that data overwrite can not be performed, which causes erase operation before writing. In order to solve this problem, a hot data for frequently updating a data for a specific page is distinguished from a cold data for a relatively non-hot data. Hot data identification helps to improve overall performance by identifying and managing hot data separately. Among the various hot data identification methods known so far, there is a technique of recording consecutive write requests by using a Bloom filter and judging the values by hot data. However, the Bloom filter technique has a problem that a new bit array must be generated every time a set of items is changed. In addition, since it is judged based on a continuous write request, it is possible to make a wrong judgment. In this paper, we propose a method using a counting filter for accurate hot data verification. The proposed method examines consecutive write requests. It also records the number of times consecutive write requests occur. The proposed method enables more accurate hot data verification.

  • Peach (Prunus persica) has been recognized as a food allergen for over 20 years. However, there is little information about cross-reactivity with other foods. The aim of this study was to research cross-reactivity of Korean cherry and hot pepper on patients allergic to peach and its stability by digestive enzyme treatment. Peach, Korean cherry, and hot pepper proteins were extracted and separated by Tricine-SDS-PAGE analysis. The protein extracts had a wide range of molecular weight, from 3 kDa to more than 26 kDa, and displayed different patterns of protein bands on Tricine-SDS-PAGE. Peach allergic patients' sera were used to detect the allergenic protein in three samples. Three peach allergic patients' sera reacted strongly with 9 kDa protein of peach, which was the expected lipid transfer protein (LTP) as the major allergen of peach and was detected with anti-LTP1 polyclonal antibody. However, the reactivity of the 23 kDa protein in Korean cherry and hot pepper protein was stronger than that of the 9 kDa protein. The stability of protein extracts on digestive enzyme treatment was examined using simulated gastric fluids (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluids (SIF), in which digestive enzyme stability is one of the characteristics of allergen potentially causing food allergy. Findings confirmed that allergenic proteins in peach, Korean cherry, and hot pepper were not completely digested by SGF and SIF treatments from results of SDS-PAGE analysis. These results confirmed that Korean cherry and hot pepper might cause cross-reactivity in peach allergic patients, and its allergenic proteins have stability against digestive enzymes.

  • We examined the drying characteristics and the drying rate model equation of garlic(allium sativum L.) using computer aided convective drying. The drying chanacteristic curve of garlic divided into constant rate drying period and 2 stage of falling rate drying period. The drying rate was fairly affected by hot air temperatures during the total drying period, but air flow rates has nearly no effect on the drying rate except initial drying period. Of the several model equation, r2 values of page model equation was the highest, and the estimated drying profiles were comparatively coincided with the observed drying profiles. Page model equation was suitable to predict the drying rate and moisture content during drying of sliced garlic.

  • This paper proposes an efficient page-level mapping algorithm that reduces the erase count in the FTL for flash memory systems. By maintaining the weight for each write request in the request buffer, the proposed algorithm estimates the degree of temporal locality for each incoming write request. To exploit temporal locality deliberately for determination of hot request, the degree of temporal locality should be much higher than the reference point determined experimentally. While previous LRU algorithm treats a new write request to have high temporal locality, the proposed algorithm allows write requests that are estimated to have high temporal locality to access hot blocks to store hot data intensively. The pages are more frequently updated in hot blocks than warm blocks. A hot block that has most of invalid pages is always selected as victim block at Garbage Collection, which results in delayed erase operation and in reduced erase count. Experimental results show that erase count is reduced by 9.3% for real I/O workloads, when compared to the previous LRU algorithm.

  • In this paper, we propose a new page allocation scheme for flash memory file system. The proposed scheme allocates pages by exploiting the concept of Purity, which is defined as the fraction of blocks where valid Pages and invalid Pages are coexisted. The Pity determines the cost of block cleaning, that is, the portion of pages to be copied and blocks to be erased for block cleaning. To enhance the purity, the scheme classifies hot-modified data and cold-modified data and allocates them into different blocks. The hot/cold classification is based on both static properties such as attribute of data and dynamic properties such as the frequency of modifications. We have implemented the proposed scheme in YAFFS and evaluated its performance on the embedded board equipped with 400MHz XScale CPU, 64MB SDRAM, and 64MB NAND flash memory. Performance measurements have shown that the proposed scheme can reduce block cleaning time by up to 15.4 seconds with an average of 7.8 seconds compared to the typical YAFFS. Also, the enhancement becomes bigger as the utilization of flash memory increases.

  • Hot air drying of Lentinus edodes was studied using the microcomputer drying system that can control the drying parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity and a weight-loss of water. The physico-chemical properties of dried products were measured in order to investigate the drying characteristics. The mechanism of water movement during air drying of Lentinus edodes closely followed the Page model. That was $M-M_c/M_0-M_c\;=\;\exp\;(-0.275t^{1.154})$ at $50^{\circ}C$ and 20% RH. The free amino acids increased with increased relative humidity. The color and browning degree increased with increased air temperature and relative humidity. The rehydration rate was low when the air temperature and relative humidity were high.
