  • Stainless steel has poor corrosion resistance in marine environment due to the breakdown of a passive film caused by chloride. It suffers electrochemical corrosion like pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion crack (SCC) in marine environment. In general, it indicates that the passive film of $Al_2O_3$ has better corrosion resistance than that of $Cr_2O_3$ in seawater. This paper investigated the damage behavior 304 stainless steel and hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Various electrochemical experiments were carried out including potential measurement, potentiodynaimic experiment, Tafel analysis and galvanostatic experiment. As a result of anodic polarization experiment, higher pitting damage depth was indicated at 304 stainless steel than hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel. In addition, relatively higher corrosion current density was shown at hot-dip aluminized stainless steel as a result of Tafel analysis.

  • To improve corrosion resistance and reduce the hydrogen uptake of 22MnB5, up to 5% Mg was added to the AlSi coating of 22MnB5. After hot-stamping and electrocoating were done on the metallic-coated specimen, the surface characteristics of the steel, hydrogen uptake content, and corrosion resistance were examined by transmittance electron microscopy, thermal desorption spectrometry, cyclic corrosion testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Mg was investigated as MgO on the surface layer after hot-stamping while it existed as Mg2Si before hot-stamping. The total hydrogen content of 22MnB5 was decreased along with the Mg content. However, there was no difference at 0.2 wt% or more. When a small amount of Mg was added, the coating corrosion resistance was decreased, but when it was added at around 1.0 wt%, the greatest corrosion resistance increase was seen. However, when 3 wt% or more was added excessively, the corrosion resistance was decreased. MgO on the surface was considered to suppress H uptake by the AlSi melting solution and increase the barrier effect of the coating.

  • High performance Nd-Fe-B magnets can be manufactured by both sintering and hot deformation. The corrosion behaviors of the magnets prepared by the two processes were compared. Effect of microstructure on the corrosion resistance of Nd-Fe-B magnets was also investigated. A neutral salt spray test (NSS) was performed for the different-processed magnets. The weight losses of the samples after the corrosion test were measured. The corrosion microstructures were observed using a scanning electron microscope. It shows that the corrosion resistance of hot deformed magnets is much better than that of the sintered ones because the grain size and the distribution of Nd-rich phases of the hot deformed magnets are much finer and more uniform than those of the sintered ones. The different microstructure between the sintered and the hot deformed magnets causes the different corrosion behavior.

  • For the purpose of improving the hot corrosion resistance of Ni-base superalloy, Inconel 600, aluminide and chromium-aluminide coatings by pack cementation process were studied. The morphology of these coatings is dependent on the type of process employed. And their overall composition depends on the composition of the base alloy and on the nature of the cement. Therefore the different aluminide and chromium-aluminide coatings obtained on a superalloy do not possess the same resistance to oxidation and hot corrosion. The mechanisms governing the formation of the coatings and the composition of the coating were varied by pack composition and temperature, and cyclic hot corrosion resistance of the auluminide coating formed by one-step process was inferior to that of the coating formed by two-step process. and Cr-Al composite coating showed good resistance for cyclic hot corrosion.

  • Due to various types of Zn coatings for many decades for various applications, it is imperative to study and compare their corrosion resistance properties of some of these. Here, we introduce a systematic methodology for evaluation and validation of corrosion protection properties of metallic coatings. According to this methodology, samples are were exposed in an advanced cyclic corrosion test chamber according to ISO 14993, and removed at the end of each withdrawal for respective corrosion and electrochemical characterization to evaluate both barrier and galvanic protection properties. Corrosion protection properties of coatings were evaluated by visual examination according to ISO 10289, mass loss and subsequent corrosion rate measurements, electrochemical properties, and advanced electrochemical scanning techniques. In this study, corrosion protection properties of a commercial zinc rich coating (ZRC) on AISI 1020 mild steel substrates were evaluated and benchmarked against hot dip galvanized (HDG). Results were correlated, and corrosion protection capabilities of the two coatings were compared. The zinc rich coating performed better than hot dip galvanized coating in terms of overall corrosion protection properties, according to the exposure and experimental conditions used in this study. It proved to be a suitable candidate to replace hot dip galvanized coatings for desired applications.

  • In this study, Mg films were prepared on hot dip aluminized steel (HDA) by using a sputtering method as a high corrosion resistance coating. The corrosion resistance of the Mg films was improved by controlling the morphology and the crystal structure of films by adjusting the Ar gas pressure during the coating process. Anodic polarization measurement results confirm that the corrosion resistance of the Mg films was affected by surface morphology and crystal structure. The corrosion resistance of the Mg coated HDA specimen increased with decreasing crystal size of the Mg coating and it was also improved by forming a film with denser morphology. The crystal structure oriented at Mg(101) plane showed the best corrosion resistance among crystal planes of the Mg metals, which is attributed to its relatively low surface energy. Neutral salt spray test confirmed that corrosion resistance of HDA can be greatly improved by Mg coating, which is superior to that of HDG (hot dip galvanized steel). The reason for the improvement of the corrosion resistance of Mg films on hot dip aluminized steel was due to the barrier effect by the Mg corrosion products formed by the corrosion of the Mg coating layer.

  • It is very important to choose optimal material having good corrosion resistance and capabilities for the part materials such as the automotive exhaust system under a hot salt corrosion atmosphere. Generally, two types of corrosion come into the automotive exhaust system. One is 'Condensate Corrosion', which is occurred by exhaust gas condensate formed at the inner surface of exhaust system heated up during driving, which results in the acid condensate pitting. The other is 'High Temperature Salt Corrosion' occurring from the interaction between the chloride ion coming from salt at the seaside district or snow salt and the outer surface of exhaust system. By the corrosion attack, the main muffler is firstly damaged and the life cycle of an automobile is significantly decreased. It has been investigated that the hot salt corrosion properties of a STS 409L and 436L ferritic stainless steels which are well-known for the materials of the automotive exhaust system. In addition, the corrosion properties of hot dip aluminum coated STS 409L have been compared with uncoated steels. Aluminum coated STS 409L showed a superior corrosion resistance than uncoated STS 409L, and futhermore showed a better corrosion resistance than a STS 436L, which is an expensive ferritic stainless steel having a excellent corrosion resistance caused from more chromium content of an alloying element.

  • Chemistry and microstructure of steel reinforcement bars play an important role to control the corrosion in concrete environments. In present study, we have chosen two different microstructure of steel rebars produced from companies and assessed their corrosion characteristics in simulated concrete pore (SCP) solution with prolonged exposure periods. Hot rolled steel rebar showed more corrosion resistance compare to thermo-mechanically treated (TMT) one. The growth of passive is greater in hot rolled (A) than TMT (B) due to orientation of microstructure. TMT steel rebar exhibit distorted microstructure with many micro cells which enhances the galvanic coupling and induce the deterioration while on the other hand hot rolled rebars exhibit fine grain boundary which responsible in growth of uniform, adherent and protective passive film resultant improved impedance was observed.

  • The authors have studied on the corrosion resistance of the hot stamped steel sheets for the application to automotive parts. Recently automotive companies have focused on the hot stamped parts to meet the light weighting needs and the safe reason. Because of the cost reduction of the hot stamped parts, automotive companies increase the usage of the coated steel sheets, especially Al-Si coated steel sheets. The coated layer of Al-Si coated steel sheets contains up to 50% of Fe, which was diffused from the steel sheet, after hot stamping. The hot stamped steel sheet was not phosphated due to the oxidation layer of the coating, however, the result of the water resistance test is similar to that of the conventional GA steel sheets. The pitting depth and the weight reduction of the coated layer of hot stamped steel sheets are less than those of GA steel.

  • Due to the electric power shortage in summer season and regulation of freon refrigerant, the application of gas absorption refrigeration and hot water systems are considerably increasing trend. But, this system consists of condenser, heat exchanger, supply pipe and radiator etc. which are easily corroded by acidity and dissolved oxygen and gases. In result, this system occurs scale attachment and corrosion damage like pitting and crevice corrosion. In this study, electrochemical polarization test of heat exchanger tubing material (copper, aluminium brass, 30% cupronickel(30% Cu-Ni)) was carried out in 60% lithium bromide solution at $95^{\circ}C$. As a result of polarization test, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and local corrosion. such as galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion behavior, of tubing materials was investigated. The main results obtained are as follows: (1) The effect of pitting and crevice corrosion control of 30% cupronickel in 60% LiBr solution at $95^{\circ}C$ is very excellent. (2) Dissimilar metal corrosion of 30% cupronickel coupling to aluminium bronze is the most sensitive. (3) Current density behavior of tube materials by impressed potential is high in order of copper > aluminium brass > 30% cupronickel.
