  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the relationship of hardiness, job stress, and burnout in nurses, and to identify predictors of burnout. Method: Empirical data were collected from 154 staff nurses at one university hospital in Gwangju city. Self- reported questionnaires were composed of the Personal Views Survey(PVS), job stress scale, Tedium scale, and 7 items asking nurse's general characteristics. Data analysis was done with a SAS package. Result: In correlation analysis, hardiness, job stress, and nursing satisfaction had significant correlation with burnout. In stepwise multiple regression, 28.7% of the variance in burnout was accounted for by nursing satisfaction (19.9%), job stress (6.0%), and hardiness (2.8%). Among subscales of hardiness, only commitment was a significant predictor, so nursing satisfaction, job stress, and commitment explained 28.9% of variance in burnout. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, the development of program for nurses to increase nursing satisfaction is needed, and more studies to examine causal relationship between nursing satisfaction and burnout is also highly recommended.

  • The demands of nursing home for the dementia are rapidly increasing. However, there are no enough nursing homes and design guidelines for it. This study was intended to examine the needs of the staff for the nursing home design and suggest the design guidelines of the Korean nursing home for the dementia. The subjects were 15 nurses and 18 care givers who worked in D hospital for the elderly with dementia in Busan. Data were collected by the self-administered questionnaire. The findings were as follows; First, the most important design element in nursing home for the dementia which the staff mentioned was 'healing environment' and then 'function' and 'maintenance' Second, the care-givers were more satisfied with their facility design than the nurses. Third, the staff pointed out that 'the relation between individual room and nursing station', namely, short distance between them, and 'enough wandering space' had to be considered at first in design process of nursing home with dementia. Also, the comfort and intimate interior mood, fresh air and sunlight were also pointed out as the important elements in nursing home design for the dementia.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a nursing salary guideline for Korean hospitals. Methods: Literature review and a mobile survey were conducted regarding staff nurses' salary. Regression analysis and simulation model were applied to develop the nurses' salary guideline. Results: The United Kingdom, Australia, and Germany have standard salary guidelines which demonstrated the standard salary of nurses. These were determined mainly by nursing experience and expertise. The results of the mobile survey indicated that the maximum to minimum ratio of the salary was as high as 4.5 among staff nurses working in Korean hospitals. Two models (exponential and linear) for a standard nursing salary guideline were developed and the simulation results demonstrated an improved salary structure for staff nurses. Conclusion: This developed salary guideline for staff nurses is recommended to be applied in Korean hospitals which provide total nursing care services.

  • Changing concepts of health care, are stimulating the demand for health care, thereby orienting society to health care rights to such an extent that they are deemed as fundamental ones inalienable to man. Concomitantly, qualitative as well as quantative improvement is being sought in the nursing service field. Today, efforts are being made in various areas, especially to qualitatively improve nursing services. A second issue concerns proper staffing. It is important to study staffing, in as much as it continues to be the most persistent and critical problem facing hospital nursing administrators today. It involves quantity, quality, and utilization of nursing personnel. A great deal of attention has been focused on this problem since mid 1930's when nursing services began to be felt as an important segment of hospital operation representing the largest single item of hospital budgets. Traditionally, the determination and allocation of nursing personnel resources has relied heavily on gloval approaches which make use of fixed staff-to-patient ratios. It has long been recognized that these ratios are insensitive to variations between institutions and among individual patients. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to point to the urgent need for the development of methodology and criteria suited to the reality of Korea. The present research selected one place, the W Christian Hospital, and was conducted over a period 10 days from January, and nurses who were them on duty in their unit. The total num-her of patients surveyed was 1,426 and that of 354. The research represents many variables affecting the direct patient care time using the result from the direct observation method, then using a calculation method to estimate the relationship between the patients care time and selected variables in the hospital setting. The amount of direct patient care time varies with many factors, such 89 the patients age. diagnosis and time in hospital. Differences are also found from hospital, clinic to clinic, ward to ward, and even shift to shift. In this research, the calculation method of estimating the required member of nursing staff is obtained by dividing the time of productive patient care activity(with the time of patient care observed), by the sum of the productive time that each the staff can supply, i.e., 360 minutes, which is obtained by deducting the time for personal activities. The results indicate a substantial difference between the time of productive patient care observed directing and the time of the productive patient care estimated using calculating method. If we know accurately the time of the direct patient care on a shift, there required number of staff members calculated if the proper method can be determinded should be able the time of the direct patient care be estimated by the patient classification system, but this research has shown this system to be in accurate in Korea. There are differences in the recommended time of productive patient care and the required number of nursing staff depending upon which method is used. The calculated result is not very accurate, so more research is needed on the patient classification system.

The subjects were 296 staff nurses at a general hospital in Seoul. Data were collected with self-reported questionnaires and analyzed by SPSS-PC+ 8.0 win for descriptive analysis and ANOVA analysis. The results of this study indicated that; 1) The perceived job stress was negatively correlated with social support and was positively correlated with TABP. 2) The score of the perceived job stress was higher in TABP nurses than TBBP. The TABP nurses usually perceived more support from peers than from supervisors These results showed that the staff nurses who supported from supervisor felt less stress, and the score of the perceived job stress was higher in TABP nurses than in TBBP. So the differences in social support and job stress according to the types of behavior pattern must be considered significantly in development of the staff nurses' stress management program. • Background: The purpose of this study was to identify role ambiguity of comprehensive nursing care unit nurses. Methods: A concept analysis method by Walker and Avant was used to understand role ambiguity of comprehensive nursing care unit nurses. Results: The antecedents of role ambiguity of nurses at comprehensive nursing units were shortage of nurses, unclear admission criteria, and demands for customized nursing care according to severity. Attributes include ambiguity in role delegation, patient placement ambiguity, and professional ambiguity among nursing staff. The consequences were diminished job satisfaction due to excessive workload, difficulty in resolving role ambiguity due to the lack of work analysis studies, and poor outcome of nursing indicators. Conclusion: Improvement of nationwide awareness for comprehensive nursing care unit is required. Clear division at scope of practice for nursing staff in accordance of each medical institution's characteristics is essential. Nurses at comprehensive nursing care unit should understand nature of role ambiguity that occurs as they work in large groups. Nurses should promote communications between nursing staff and they must have volition to improve status quo. An additional research of comprehensive nursing care on the causes of role ambiguity in the practice of nursing care for ward nurses is needed, and management measures should be sought at the organizational level.
