First Record of Tri-spine Horseshoe Crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (Merostomata: Xiphosurida: Limulidae) from Korean Waters

  • A tri-spine horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus (Leach, 1819) was collected from a sandy beach of Udo Island of Jeju during the full moon tides in November 1997. Three spines on the posterior margin of the opisthosoma were characterized indicating that the specimen was T. tridentatus. This specimen was a female with the total length of 49.5 cm and prosoma width of 23.0 cm. Tachypleus tridentatus was the first record from Korean waters. A brief description and figures of the species were given. This finding indicates that Korea is included to the distribution range of the species.

Recent Advances in the Innate Immunity of Invertebrate Animals

  • Invertebrate animals, which lack adaptive immune systems, have developed other systems of biological host defense, so called innate immunity, that respond to common antigens on the cell surfaces of potential pathogens. During the past two decades, the molecular structures and functions of various defense components that participated in innate immune systems have been established in Arthropoda, such as, insects, the horseshoe crab, freshwater crayfish, and the protochordata ascidian. These defense molecules include phenoloxidases, clotting factors, complement factors, lectins, protease inhibitors, antimicrobial peptides, Toll receptors, and other humoral factors found mainly in hemolymph plasma and hemocytes. These components, which together compose the innate immune system, defend invertebrate from invading bacterial, fungal, and viral pathogens. This review describes the present status of our knowledge concerning such defensive molecules in invertebrates.

수입 수산 갑각류의 국내 명칭 재정립 (Reestablishment of Korean Names of Imported Fisheries Crustaceans)

  • The use of uncertain names for imported crustaceans causes considerable confusion for the establishment of government policies and the public market. Therefore, there have been demands for reestablishment of the domestic names of imported fish to correct the market order and to prevent damage caused by confusion among consumers. A total of 118 species of imported fisheries crustaceans were reviewed (47 crab spp., 36 shrimp spp., 27 lobster and crayfish spp., five mantis shrimp spp., and three horseshoe crab spp.). Although not belonging to the Subphylum Crustacea, three species of the Subphylum Chelicerata and five species of the Order Stomatopoda were included for review. Of these, 49 species that require Korean name assignment and reexamination of domestic names were selected and Korean names were assigned.

  • 지금까지 많은 항균성 펩타이드가 포유류 (1), 양서류 (2), 곤충 (3) 및 식물 (4)로 부터 단리ㆍ정제되었고, 구조-활성간의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있지만, 이러한 연구는 육상생물에 제한적으로 수행되어 겼으며 해양생물을 대상으로 한 연구는 극히 제한되어 있는 상태이다. 해양생물로부터 정제된 항균성 펩타이드로서는 Flounder skin 분비물에서 pleurocidin (5), Moses sole fish에서 pardaxins (6), Horseshoe crab에서 Tachyplesin I(7), Tunicates hemocytes에서 Clavanins (8), Mollusc에서 Mytilins (9) 등이 보고되고 있지만 불가사리를 이용한 항균성물질의 연구는 희박한 실정이다. 투구게로부터 단리된 항균성 펩티드의 구조-활성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the structure-activity of antimicrobial peptide isolated from horseshoe crab)

  • Tachyplesin I은 투구게로부터 단리된 항균성 펩티드이다. 인지질막에 대한 tachyplesin I의 작용 메카니즘을 조사하기 위해서 tachyplesin I 및 5개의 유도체를 액상법으로 합성하였다. 합성한 5개의 유도체는 [$Phe^2$]-tachyplesin I, [$Phe^{8,13}$]-techyplesin I, S-S결합을 가지지 않는 [$Cys(Acm)^{3,7,12,16}$]-tachyplesin I 및 [$Cys(Acm)^{3,7,12,16}$]-tachyplesin I 의 단편인 7(Acm)과 10(Acm)이다. 원편광이색성 (CD) 스펙트럼에서 tachyplesin I은 완충액에서 역평행 $\beta$-구조를 취하며 산성 지질막하에서는 완충액보다 약간 불규칙적인 구조를 가진다. Carboxyfluorescein 누출 실험결과 tachyplesin은 중성 및 산성 지질막과 강하게 상호 작용 하였다. 또한 형광 실험하에서는 펩티드의 소수성 부분이 인지질막의 내부에 존재하였다. 7(Acm) 및 10(Acm) 유도체를 제외한 모든 펩티드들은 lipopolysaccharide결합에 있어 거의 유사한 활성을 나타냈었다. 따라서 지질이중막은 tachyplesin I을 안정한 $\beta$-구조로부터 덜 규칙적인 구조로 구조적 변화를 유도한다고 여겨진다.

전주 수원백씨인재공파 종가 학인당의 '모심상' 상품화 연구 (Development of Mosim Dining Table's Menu for Head House of Suwon Baek Clan and Injaegong Group in Jeonju)

  • This study aimed to develop a new commercialization model for theindustrialization of head family food as a gentry families' complex food culture product. We tried to develop a head family food and propose a city sightseeing style's head family product by interviews with 'Hakindang' as the center, the head house of the Suwon Baek clan, and Injaegong group in Jeonjoo. Hakindang (in Jeonju) was confirmed as an improved model Korean-style house in the enlightenment period and the twentieth style modern head family as emerging capitalist. Hakindangsupported independence war funds in the Japanese colonial era and was widely known as gate of filial piety in Jeonju. Representative seasonal foods of Hakindang include pan-fried sweet rice cake with flower petals in the spring, hot spicy meat stew and polypus variabilis in summer, hanchae in autumn, and napa cabbage kimchi with salted flatfish seafood in the winter. When parents-in-law had a birthday, there were party noodles, sliced abalone stuffed with pine nuts, brass chafing dish, fish eggs, slices of blilde meat, and matnaji. Daily, there were mainly salted seafood, slices of raw fish, grilled short rib patties, braised fish, baked fish, syruped chestnut, grilled deodeok root, bean sprouts, radish preserved with salt, dongchimi, soy sauce-marinated horseshoe crab, butterbur, perilla seed stew, salted clams, raw bamboo shoot, agar, fried kelp, etc. The most basic virtue of the head family is filial duty, and they developed mosim dining as a representative food of Hakingdang's head family. The mosim menu is composed of 65% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 15% fat because it is table for parents-in-law like more than 75 years old. The sensory evaluation showed a chewy texture that is easily swallowed.
