In this study, we propose an innovative lateral force distribution building system between tall buildings by utilizing the difference of moment of inertia, as the alternative design for highly integrated city area. Considering a tri-axial symmetric conditions and boundary conditions for the three-dimensional building structure system, a two-dimensional model is composed. In the proposed indeterminate structural model, important design variables are determined for obtaining minimum horizontal deflections, reactions and bending moments at the ground level of the buildings. Regarding a case of the provided two spatial structures connected to 4 buildings, the optimum location of middle located spatial structure is 45% from the top of the building, which minimize the end moments at the bottom of the buildings. In the considered verification examples, reduced drifts at the top location of the building systems are validated against static wind pressure loads and static earthquake loads. The suggested hybrid building system will improve the safety and reliability of the system due to the added internal truss-dome structures in terms of more than 30% reduced drift and vibration through the development of convergence of tall buildings and spatial structures.
To investigate the effects of soil properties of the soft zone around a pile subjected 1,o the horizontal harmonic vibration, the parametric study is perfomed. The determination of the soil reaction or stiffness of the Winkler springs representing the soil around a pile is performed by dividing the soil profile into a number of homogeneous obtained from this study are as follows : 1) The real and imaginary parts of the stiffness show clear variations for the different shear modulus ratios, poisson's ratios, and distance retios to outer boundary as the dimensionless frequency increases. The differences are more pronounced for the imaginary part of the stiffness. 2) The stiffness of soil shows clear decrease. The real parts of the stiffness show larger as the frequency increases. On the other hand, the imaginary parts of the stiffness show smaller.

A Very High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (VHTR) has been selected as a high energy heat source of the order of $950^{\circ}C$ for nuclear hydrogen generation, which can produce hydrogen from water or natural gas. A primary hot gas duct (HGD) as a coaxial double-tube type cross vessel is a key component connecting a reactor pressure vessel and an intermediate heat exchanger in the VHTR. In this study, a structural sizing methodology for the primary HGD of the VHTR is suggested in order to modulate a flow-induced vibration (FIV). And as an example, a structural sizing of the horizontal HGD with a coaxial double-tube structure was carried out using the suggested method. These activities include a decision of the geometric dimensions, a selection of the material, and an evaluation of the strength of the coaxial double-tube type cross vessel components. Also in order to compare the FIV characteristics of the proposed design cases, a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis was carried out using the ADINA code.
Gearboxes are often used in the petrochemical and electrical power plants to transmit mechanical power between two branches of a machinery train rotating at different speeds. When the gearboxes are connected with rotors supported by journal bearings, bearing loads vary in magnitude and direction with rotor speed and torque transmitted by the gearboxes. In this study, dynamic characteristics of the system which consists of gearboxes and a rotor supported by journal bearings are investigated analytically and experimentally by employing the polynomial transfer matrix method and modal analysis under different speeds and torque levels. Journal bearing loads due to the transmitted torque are claculated analytically and the stiffness and damping coefficient of the journal bearings are obtained using finite element method. Comparison of the analytical and experimental results shows that the cross coupled stiffness coefficients increase with increasing rotor speed, while the cross coupled damping coefficients decrease. This generates the oil whirl instability in the journal bearings. As the transmitted torque level goes up, the stiffness coefficients of the journal bearing and the first horizontal natural frequency increase. High levels of the transmitted torque produce high bearing stiffness since the contact loads of the mating gear teeth increase. The logarithmic decrement, which is a stability indicator, is shown to decrease with increasing speed and decreasing torque. Thus, at the low torque level, the system become unstable even at the low shaft speed.
Sesame has usually been harvested manually in korea. The conventional sesame harvest procedures consists of cutting, binding, drying and pod shattering. The procedures of drying and shattering are repeated $2{\sim}3$ times. By manual works of this conventional shattering, it was found that some extent of pods were has always remained unopened. Therefore, this study was conducted to find a way to save the labor of sesame shattering by use of a drying device; a prototype of shattering machine was developed and tested the performance. The developed prototype consists of several parts: a continuous horizontal inlet using a chain conveyer, a shattering by a shocking agitator, a rotating cone for shattering of remaining closed pods, and a winnow. The shattering ratio measured by this prototype was 90.3%, 6.4% and 3.3% at the first, second and third shattering step, respectively. We found that in contrast to the conventional method which required at least 3 times operations for complete shattering, this shattering prototype with the condition of sufficient dried sesame pod offered more than 90% of shattering ratio in the first operation.
The underlying goal of the present paper is to investigate soil and structural uncertainties on impedance functions and structural response of soil-shallow foundation-structure (SSFS) system using Monte Carlo simulations. The impedance functions of a rigid massless circular foundation resting on the surface of a random soil layer underlain by a homogeneous half-space are obtained using 1-D wave propagation in cones with reflection and refraction occurring at the layer-basement interface and free surface. Firstly, two distribution functions (lognormal and gamma) were used to generate random numbers of soil parameters (layer's thickness and shear wave velocity) for both horizontal and rocking modes of vibration with coefficients of variation ranging between 5 and 20%, for each distribution and each parameter. Secondly, the influence of uncertainties of soil parameters (layer's thickness, and shear wave velocity), as well as structural parameters (height of the superstructure, and radius of the foundation) on the response of the coupled system using lognormal distribution was investigated. This study illustrated that uncertainties on soil and structure properties, especially shear wave velocity and thickness of the layer, height of the structure and the foundation radius significantly affect the impedance functions, and in same time the response of the coupled system.
High-rise buildings are very slender and flexible. Their low stiffness values make them vulnerable to horizontal loads, such as those associated with wind or earthquakes. For high-rise buildings, the threat to serviceability caused by wind-induced vibration is an important problem. To estimate the serviceability under wind action, the response acceleration of a building at the roof height is used. The response acceleration is estimated by the same wind speed at all wind directions. In general, the effect of wind direction is not considered. Therefore, the response accelerations obtained are conservative. If buildings have typical plans and strong winds blow from relatively constant wind directions, it is necessary to account for the wind direction to estimate the response accelerations. This paper presents three methods of evaluating the response accelerations while considering the effects of wind direction. These three serviceability evaluation methods were estimated by combining the wind directional frequency data obtained from a weather station with the results of a response analysis using wind tunnel tests. Finally, the decrease in the efficiencies of the response acceleration for each serviceability evaluation method was investigated by comparing the response acceleration for the three methods accounting for wind direction with the response acceleration in which wind direction was not considered.

In SMART, the flow mixing header assembly (FMHA) is used to mix the coolant flowing into the reactor core to maintain a uniform temperature. The FMHA is designed to have enough stiffness so the resonance with reactor internal structures does not occurs during the pipe break and the seismic accidents. Since the gap between the FMHA and the core support barrel assembly is very narrow compared with the diameter of FMHA, the hydrodynamic mass effect acting on the FMHA is not negligible. Therefore the hydrodynamic mass characteristics on the FMHA are investigated to consider the fluid and structure interaction effects. The result of modal analysis for the dry and underwater conditions, the natural frequency of primary vibration mode for the horizontal direction is reduced from 136.67 Hz to 43.76 Hz. Also the result of frequency response spectrum seismic analysis for the dry and underwater conditions, the maximum equivalent stress are increased from 13.89 MPa to 40.23 MPa. Therefore, reactor internal structures located in underwater condition shall consider carefully the hydrodynamic mass effects even though they have sufficient stiffness required for performing its functions under the dry condition.

The dynamic behavior of spatial structures is different depending on the aspect ration of arch structure, as the rise-span ratio or open-angle, and these spatial structures show differently the character of seismic response in accordance with stiffness and connection of the lower support structures that are directly influenced by earthquake. Therefore, in this paper, dynamic analysis is conducted for seismic response of single layer arch structures by the influence of column's stiffness and connection, to reflect the different vertical and horizontal vibration mode of single layer arch structures. The vertical response of single layer arch structures is more influence by lower columns and the influence of column's connection rotational stiffness is not large, except to the hinged connections.

It is very important to understand and control the sloshing in a liquid container that is partially filled with liquid. Previous studies focused primarily on the sloshing and resonance caused by sinusoidal excitations, while the present study focuses on understanding and suppressing sloshing in a container that moves rapidly from a given point to another in industrial applications. To achieve this, we first numerically predict the two-phase flow induced by the horizontal movement of a rectangular container. Then we analyze the effects of container-velocity profile (in particular acceleration/deceleration duration) on sloshing. Results show that sloshing is significantly suppressed when the acceleration/deceleration duration is a multiple of the 1st-mode natural period of sloshing.
