This study is to provide the experimental information and basic data on heat transfer characteristics of horizontal liquid film driven by hot wind. Heat transfer characteristics of the liquid film in the rectangular duct was observed and the change of film temperature was measured. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as feed water rate and velocity and temperature of feed air. From the observation and the measurement the general understanding of heat transfer characteristics for liquid film driven by hot wind was provided.

Film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled turbulent liquid film flow on a horizontal plate was investigated by theoretical and experimental studies. In the theoretical analysis, by solving the integral energy and momentum equations analytically, some generalized expressions for Nusselt number was deduced. Next, by comparing the deduced equations with the experimental data on the turbulent film boiling heat transfer of the subcooled thin liquid film flow, the semi-empirical relation between the Nusselt number based on the modified heat transfer coefficient and the Reynolds number was obtained. The correlating equation was very similar to that of the turbulent heat transfer in a single phase flow, and it was found that the heat transfer was dissipated to increase the liquid temperature.
The minimum heat flux conditions are experimentally investigated for the subcooled liquid film flow on the horizontal plate. The experimental results show that the minimum heat flux point temperature becomes higher with the increase of the velocity and the subcooling of the liquid film flow. However, the effect of distance from the leading edge of the heat transfer plate on the minimum heat flux is almost negligible. Also, the experimental results show that the propagation velocity of wetting front increase with increasing the velocity and the subcooling of the liquid film flow.

Condensation heat transfer on a single horizontal tube with electric fields (Electro-Hydro-Dynamics, (EHD)) has been studied experimentally. Results are presented for EHD enhanced condensation of R-113 on a single horizontal tube using several electrode geometries. Especially, its attention was focused on the effects of electrode geometry, electric field strength and the gap of the electrode. In this study, single wire, helical, ring and mesh electrode were used. The range of the imposed voltage was 0~20 kV. As the voltage was increased the surface of liquid became an unstable wave, stream jet, liquid column and then liquid extraction in sequence. Among the various kinds of electrodes, the single wire electrode is suitable for practical application.

An experiment of close contact melting of phase-change medium partially filled in an isothermally heated horizontal cylinder is performed which involves the volume expansion of liquid induced by the solid-liquid density difference. The solid-liquid interface motion and the free surface behavior of liquid were reported photographically. The experimental results show that the curvature of upper solid-liquid interface varied to flat as melting progresses. In addition to the varying interface shape, the melting rate increases with the lower initial height of solid and the free surface height of liquid increases linearly. The experimental results of molten mass fraction were expressed in a function of dimensionless time Fo.Ste$^{3}$4/ and agreed well with the analytical solutions.

Buoyancy-assisted melting of an unconstrained ice in an isothermally heated horizontal enclosure was numerically analyzed in a range of wall temperatures encompassing the density inversion point. The problem as posed here involves two physically distinct domains each of which has its own scales and respective heat transfer mode. These two domains join at the junction where the liquid squeezed out of the film region flushes into the lower melt pool. Both of these domains have been treated separately in the literature by a patching technique which invokes several, otherwise unnecessary, assumptions. The present study eliminates successfully such a superfluous procedure by treating the film and lower melt pool regions as a single domain. As a result of this efficient solution procedure, the interaction of the water stream ejected at the junction and the natural convection in the melt pool could be clarified for different wall temperatures. Though limited by two-dimensionality, the present results conformed indirectly the earlier reported transition of the flow pattern, as the wall temperature was increased over the density inversion point. The transient evolution of the melting surface, the time rate of change in melt volume fraction, the local and temporal variation of the heat transfer coefficients are analyzed and presented.

Structures of interfacial waves in nearly-horizontal countercurrent stratified air-water flow have been measured by means of a needle contact method. Based upon a statistical analysis for the liquid film distribution, statistical properties of the waves such as mean film thickness, mean wave amplitude and rms value of the wave fluctuation have been calculated. The results show that the film distribution can be described by a Gaussian probability density function for the three-dimensional wave regime. It is also indicated that the mean film thick ness and the rms value of the wave fluctuation increase as gas and liquid flow rates are increased in countercurrent two-phase flow. The dimensionless intensity of the wave fluctuation may be regarded as a function of the Froude number and the dimensionless mean film thickness.

In this paper an experimental study is presented of the problem of dynamic behavior of a water droplet impinging upon a heated surface. The experiments are mainly focused on the effects of impinging angle of a droplet and surface temperature on the impact dynamics of the droplet. It Is clarified that the droplet exhibits much different behavior depending on the normal momentum of an impinging droplet before impact. At surface temperature In the nucleate boiling regime. the disintegration of a droplet doesn't occur, whereas the deforming droplet adheres to the surface. The spreading and contraction of the liquid film is repeated a couple of times for the horizontal surface but the expanded droplet just slips without noticeable contraction for the inclined surfaces. In the film boiling regime, the impinging droplet spreads over the surface as a liquid film which is separated from the surface by produced vapor. Depending on the magnitude of the normal momentum of the droplet the disintegration into the several irregular shapes of liquid elements occurs for the horizontal and 30o-inclined surfaces, whereas the impinging droplet for the 60o-inclined surface doesn't break up and tends to recover the original spherical shape.
The main purpose of this work is to investigate the effects of the wall thickness, the ultrasonic frequency, and the acoustic impedance of wall material on the liquid-film thickness measurement by an ultrasonic pulse echo method. A series of liquid-film thickness measurements in a horizontal air-water stratified system was performed employing a plate-type and a tube-type test sections. Measurements were repeated changing (1) the wall thickness of the test section and (2) the transducer frequency. Also, in an effort to improve the accuracy of the measurement and to exam me the effect of acoustic impedance of wall material on the measurement by an ultrasonic technique, two different stand-off rods, one made of stainless steel and the other polyacrylate, were used in the liquid-film thickness measurement. These experimental results are discussed and compared with the actual film thicknesses.
