  • An elastic plate bar jointed to a rigid bar is considered. The bar is subjected to uniform axial tension. A theoretical approximate solution is obtained in an infinite hyperbolic series form and some numerical results for various Poisson's ratios are presented. A rubber plate joined to a strong wooden plate has been tested to obtain an experimental data and the results are compared with theoretical ones. Two values for vertical displacements are in good agreement but it is not satisfactory for horizontal displacements. The conclusion arrived at are as follow : The natures of stress distributions and deformed shapes given by above theoretical solution are compatible in mechanical sense. The magnitudes of stress and displacement components would not be reliable for exact works. A sharp shear stress concentrations are detected at the both ends of the joint.

  • This paper discusses an automatic visual-servoing system, in which a laser and a CCD camera are used for imaging the pattern of joint groove. The algorithm used here is simple and robust to find out the gap width and gap center. As a consequence, the speed of algorithm is very fast and optimized. A feature of this system is that it processes only by summing the vertical line and horizontal line of screen without any image preprocessing in order to get the energy information of lines alternatively. It is practical and useful for the system requiring a fast process time of vision.

  • The main purpose of this study is to evaluate early age thermal stresses and to estimate the risk of thermal cracking in the footings of Hyungsan bridge. In this study, stress analyses are performed for several construction stages using the computation of temperature distributions. The stress analysis results show that, not using the embedded pipe cooling, placing the concrete at once for each footings may cause sever thermal cracking. So, the structures should be constructed with one horizontal construction joint. Then the height of each lifts were determined to be 1.50 meters. Using various time intervals between lifts, temperature and stress.

  • A hybrid position/force control scheme to regulate the force and position by dual arms is proposed where two arms are treated as one rm in a kinematic viewpoint. The force error calculated from the information of two force/torque sensors attached to the end of each arm is transferred to minimum configuration space coordinates and then is distributed to total system joint coordinates, The position adjustment at the total con-figuration coordinates is computed based on the effective compliance matrix with respect to total joint coordinates which is obtained by coordinate transformation between the task coordinates and the total joint coordinates. The proposed scheme is applied to sawing task. When the trajectory of the saw is planned to follow a line in a horizontal plane 2 position parameters are to be controlled(i.e., two translational positions) Also a certain level of contact force has to be controlled along the vertical direction(i.e. minus z-direction) not to loose the contact with the object to be sawn. We experimentally show that the performance of the velocity and force response are satisfactory. The proposed hybrid control scheme can be applied to arbitrary two cooperating arm system regardless of their kinematic structure and the number of actuated joints.

  • The purpose of this study was to perform the radiographic measurements and temporomandibular joint evaluation in mandibular asymmetry. For this study, thirty-two patients who have mandibular asymmetry were selected and submentovertex, panoramic and lateral corrected tomographic radiographs were taken. Horizontal and vertical analysis using various landmarks on these radiographs were performed. Also radiographic and clinical evaluation of temporomandibular joint were obtained. The results were as follows ; 1. On the submentovertex radiograph, the mean distance of Pogonion to midline was 5.0±3.8mm. 2. The mean distance of Pogonion to Gonion was 100.6±9.2mm in deviated side and 104.3±9.1mm in contra-lateral side, and there was a significant difference between the deviated and the contra-lateral side (p<0.001). 3. The distance difference of Pogonion to Gonion between the deviated and the contra-lateral side was significantly related to the degree of asymmetry (p<0.001). 4. On panoramic radiograph, the condylar height of the contra-lateral side was significantly longer than the one of the deviated side(p<0.001). 5. On lateral corrected tomogram, bony changes of temporomandibular joint were observed in 11 condyles of the deviated side and 9 condyles of the contra-lateral side. Erosion and osteophyte were the most common changes in both the deviated and the contra-lateral sides.

  • This paper describes lab test results of artificial rock-like material samples having a plane joint. Cyclic shear tests were performed under different normal loads and different shear displacement amplitudes. For this purpose, multi-stage normal loading tests (30 kN, 60 kN, 90 kN, 180 kN, 360 kN and 480 kN) with cyclic excitation at frequency of 1.0 Hz and different shear displacement amplitudes (0.5 mm, 1.0 mm, 2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, 5.0 mm, and 8.0 mm) were conducted using the big shear box device GS-1000. Experimental results show, that shear forces increase with the increase of normal forces and quasi-static friction coefficient is larger than dynamic one. With the increase of normal loads, approaching the peak value of shear forces needs larger shear displacements. During each cycle the normal displacements increase and decrease (rotational behavior in every cycle). Peak angle of inclination increases with the increase of normal load. A phase shift between maximum shear displacement and maximum shear force is observed. The corresponding time shift decreases with increasing normal load and increases with increasing shear displacement amplitudes.

  • The pre-peak cyclic shear mechanism of two-order asperity degradation of rock joints in the direct shear tests with static constant normal loads (CNL) are investigated using experimental and numerical methods. The laboratory testing rock specimens contains the idealized and regular two-order triangular-shaped asperities, which represent the specific geometrical conditions of natural and irregular waviness and unevenness of rock joint surfaces, in the pre-peak cyclic shear tests. Three different shear failure patterns of two-order triangular-shaped rock joints can be found in the experiments at constant horizontal shear velocity and various static constant normal loads in the direct and pre-peak cyclic shear tests. The discrete element method is adopted to simulate the pre-peak shear failure behaviors of rock joints with two-order triangular-shaped asperities. The rock joint interfaces are simulated using a modified smooth joint model, where microscopic scale slip surfaces are applied at contacts between discrete particles in the upper and lower rock blocks. Comparing the discrete numerical results with the experimental results, the microscopic bond particle model parameters are calibrated. Effects of cyclic shear loading amplitude, static constant normal loads and initial waviness asperity angles on the pre-peak cyclic shear failure behaviors of triangular-shaped rock joints are also numerically investigated.

  • This study was performed to invetigate the relationship between clinical manifestations related to temporomandibular joint sounds and temporomandibular joint vibrations that occurred synchronously with sounds. There have been reported in many articles that joint sounds indicate internal joint pathology. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate type and patterns of joint sounds, and radiographic changes of temporomandibular joint(TMJ) in order to diagnose and deal with the Temporomandibular Disorders(TMD). For this study 142 patients with TMDs were collected and they were examined by routine diagnostic procedure for TMDs. The author classified TMJ sounds clinically into 3 types : click, popping, and crepitus. Transcranial and panoramic radiographs were taken for observein bony changes of TMJ, and for observing vibrations of TMJ Sonopak of Biopak system was used. The obtained results were as follows : 1. Female subjects with crepitus were older than those with click or popping and their mean ages were about 45 years old. But in male subjects, there was no age difference. 2. For all subjects, mean value of maximal mouth opening were above 40mm, which are lower limit of normal vertical opening. But in subjects with L-type opening deviation, mouth opening capacity were about 36mm of range. 3. Symptom duration stated when patient presented first were slightly longer in subjects with crepitus but there were no statistical differences. And there were also no radiographic differences among 3 types of joint sounds in regard to symptom duration. 4. In subjects wih click, it might have been interpreted that 12% had closed lock, 12% had degenerative joint disease, and about 17% of he subjects had normal joints by Sonopak. 5. There were no significant relationships between subjective loudness of joint sounds and magnitude of joint vibrations. 6. The highest value of Integral and peak amplitude were observed in popping sounds and though it was not significant, value of peak frequency was highest in crepitus. 7. Amount of mandibular positional change were differed between click and crepitus on frontal plane, between click, crepitus and popping on horizontal plane in rotational movement, respectively. However, there no difference among them in translational movements.
