Mechanical Behavior of Polymer Foam Reinforced with Silica Aerogel (실리카 에어로겔을 첨가한 폴리머 폼의 기계적 특성)

  • In the present study, silica-aerogel-polyurethane foams were synthesized to improve the mechanical characteristics and insulation performance of the polyurethane foam applied to a liquefied natural gas carrier at a cryogenic temperature of $-163^{\circ}C$. A silica-aerogel-polyurethane foam bulk was prepared using a homogenizer by varying the weight ratio of the silica aerogel (0, 1, 3, and 5 wt%), while maintaining the contents of the polyol, isocyanate, and blowing agent constant. Compression tests were performed at room and cryogenic temperatures to compare the mechanical properties of the silica-aerogel polyurethane foams. The internal temperature of the universal testing machine was maintained through the cryogenic chamber. The thermal conductivity of the silica-aerogel-polyurethane foam was measured using a heat flow meter to confirm the insulation performance. In addition, the effect of the silica aerogels on the cells of the polyurethane foam was investigated using FE-SEM and FTIR. From the experimental results, the 1 wt% silica aerogel polyurethane foam showed outstanding mechanical and thermal performances.

Evaluating the Degree of Macrodispersion of Carbon Nanotubes using UV-VIS-NIR Absorption Spectroscopy

  • We measured the degree of macrodispersion of the various single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) using UV-VIS-NIR absorption spectroscopy. CNTs were dispersed with SDS of 2 wt % in deionized water using the homogenizer and then were further centrifugated at 6000 g for 10 min. The degree of macrodispersion, expressed by $D_m({\lambda})=A_a({\lambda})/A_b({\lambda})^*100$ (%), where ${\lambda}$ is the wavelength and $A_a({\lambda})$ and $A_b({\lambda})$ are the absorbance of the sample after and before centrifugation, respectively. In the case of MWCNTs, we evaluated the degree of macrodispersion by the average degree of macrodispersion ($D_m({\lambda})$) between 1000 and 1200 nm. The degree of macrodispersion of SWCNTs was evaluated at the wavelength in which van Hove singularity-related transition regions were excluded, i.e., the range was chosen between ${E_{11}}^S$ and ${E_{22}}^S$ peaks. We have estimated six samples with the same method. The standard deviation of each sample was lower than 5. Therefore, we presented a reliable evaluation method for the macrodispersion of CNTs for standardization.

Preparation of Jam Using Undaria pinnatifida Sporophyll (미역귀를 이용한 잼의 제조)

  • In the preparation of jam using Undaria pinnatifida sporophyll, effects of food ingredients to the jam rheology were investigated. The paste was prepared by crushing the sporophyll using chopper and homogenizer with 2.5 times water and then it was filtrated before to make a jam. The sporophyll jam was adjusted to 62$^{\circ}$Brix by heating and concentration. It was a similar to the commercial jam in the gel strength. Among the various treatments, the jam prepared with 60% (w/w) sugar, 0.75% (w/w) high methoxy (HM) pectin and 0.3% (w/w) citric acid showed best quality aspects of both texture profile analysis (TPA) and sensory evaluation. Addition of 0,08% (v/w) synthetic strawberry flavor and 0.5% (w/w) cinnamon powder to sporophyll paste gave a good masking effect for the undesirable sea mustard flavor.

Conditioning and Characteristics of the Sea Water containing Heavy Oil (유독해수(油獨海水)의 조정(調整)과 성장(性狀)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • As the leakage of crude oil from tankers breaks out frequently, it caused a serious problem for ocean pollution and calls for developing treatments to handle the leaked crude oil and mitigate the pollution. Thus it is required to develop new purification technolgies and appropriate treatment systems which have sufficient treatment capability in order to cope with the anticipated ocean pollution. In this experiment, A and B type heavy oils were used to make the emulsion of both water containing heavy oil and sea-water containing heavy oil. The following are the main results from this study ; 1. When A and B type heavy oils were added to the original sea-water and treatedin the homogrenizer respectively, the particle of oil beacame smaller in both cases. Under the same condition, while the initial oil density of sea-water containing B-heavy oil is higher than of emulsion with A-heavy oil, the particle of A-heavy oil is finer than that of B-heavy oil. 2. When A and B type heavy oils were added to distilled water and treated in the homogenizer respectively, the particle was more dispersed and finer than that in the case of sea-water in both cases. In this result, the water containing oil formed more stable emulsion than the sea-water containing oil. 3. In this experiment, all emulsions showed oil in water types. 4. Since the oil particle is larger in the sea-water than in the distillated water, interms of elimination of oil, it is thought to be more important to give Membrane treatment after implementing sandfilter, activity carbon, coagulation-sedimentation and floating separation as pre-treatment.

  • It is a gel type high functional toothpaste containing vitamin C, E, propolis extract and the rest of herb with a nanoemulsion state. Vitamin C, E is known as the material with an eminent anti-oxidation effect. Propolis is known as the material with an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect. We have been succeeding in making nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis through the high pressure homogenizer using stable oil and lecithin and the gel type high functional tooth paste were made from nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis. We observed the process of wound protecting effect and cure effect for a wound of soft tissue, gingival tissue and mucous membrane showing ulcer and inflammation in oral cavity after applying a gel type high functional toothpaste to patient. As a result, the wound were healed very fast and any side effects were not shown. We confirmed that a gel type high functional toothpaste with nanoemulsion of vitamin C, E and propolis extract has good effect not only for wound healing but also for treatment of ulcer-like lesion in oral cavity. So we report our cases with review of literatures.

Purification of Crude Protein Mixture from Panax ginseng and Hairy Root for Proteome Analysis (인삼 및 모상근의 프로테옴 분석을 위한 단백질 추출 방법)

  • Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer is a well-known Korean traditional medicine. Until now, even though major research of ginseng has been focused on the pharmacological effect, clinical application and chemical analysis of extracted secondary metabolite for several years, the physiology and gene functions of ginseng were not well known. In this research, we have developed the protein extraction methods of ginseng root and hairy root for proteome analysis in order to elucidate the gene(s) function of ginseng. Using the liquid nitrogen (equation omitted) TCA method as protein extraction method, about 660 protein spots were detected on the 2-DE gel of hairy root. Additionally, comparative analysis result of 2-DEs of ginseng root (equation omitted) hairy root suggested that proteomes of same organism could be changeable according to the culture condition, growth stages and other stimulus.

Growth Inhibition of Food-borne Bacteria by Juice and Extract of Ginger and Garlic (생강과 마늘 즙 및 추출물의 식중독 세균에 대한 증식저해작용)

  • This study was conducted to understand the inhibitory garlic and ginger against the growth of food born pathogenic bacteria. Juice was prepared from the raw spices by using an electric homogenizer and membrane filter. Dry-powdered spices were treated with double distilled water and 70% ethanol to extract the antibacterial substances, respectively. Growth inhibitory effects of juice and extracts of the spices were monitored by using bacterial strains such as B. subtilis, L. moncytogenes, S. aureus,E. coli O157 : H7, P. aeruginosa, and S. typhimurium. On a solid medium where E. coli and S. aureus cells were grown, ginger juice formed inhibitory zone at the concentrations of 2-10% by paper disc test. The Bone formed by ginger juice was wider and more transparent than that formed by garlic juice on the same concentration.1. monocytogenes and B. subtilis were more sensitive to garlic juice than others, and stopped growing at 2% garlic juice. Ginger juice showed the growth inhibition by 30-50% at 1.0% concentration. On the contrast, P. aeruginosa which resisted to the garlic juice was the most sensitive to ginger juice. Water extract of garlic was not effective to inhibit the bacterial growth, while 2% ginger extract completely inhibited the growth of E. coli and S. aureus. Alcohol extract of ginger inhibited the growth of bacteria at the concentration of 0.3%. This growth inhibition is almost 10 times lower than that of the garlic extract. It was clear that ginger had more potential than garlic as an inhibitor to control the growth of the indicator organisms.

Emulsion Stability of Soymilk Produced by the Varied Homogenizing Pressure (균질기 압력을 변화시켜 제조한 두유의 유화안정성)

  • The purpose of this study was to make soy milk without using any food additives. First, it was attempted to find the effects of homogenizing pressure on the emulsion stability of soy milk without addition of monoglyceride. The soy milk was made with the ratio of bean and water as 1:8, and the yields of soy milk was measured to be 5.87 fold of the beans used. lifter making soy milk by differentiated pressure of the homogenizer at $50kg/cm^2,\;100kg/cm^2,\;150kg/cm^2\;and\;200kg/cm^2$, general composition of the center part of soy milk was analysed. The analysis results indicated that the lipid content increased by the increase of the emulsion pressure. Moreover, the suspension stability, emulsion stability and viscosity also increased by the increase of the emulsion pressure. Therefore, we thought that the production of soy milk without adding any emulsifier was possible only by homogenizing at higher pressure over $150kg/cm^2$.

The Study for Stability of Useful Glycyrrhiza uralensis (Licorice Root) Using Nanosolve and PMMA (Nanosolve와 PMMA를 이용한 유용성감초산의 안정화에 대한 연구)

  • Glycyrrhiza uralensis (licorice root) is very useful medicinal herb because of strong anti-inflammatory and anti-wrinkle effect. Therefore, it is widely used in functional cosmetics. However, it is insoluble and easily decomposed by light, heat, oxygen, etc. In this study, we first prepared NanoSolve-Licorice (30-50nm) using Glycyrrhiza uralensis and propylene glycol! hydrogenated lecithin/caprylic/capric triglyceride/glycerin/water system with microfluidizer. And then, NanoSolve-Licorice and porous PMMA are dispersed in ethanol. Finally, we could get a stabilized system with high-pressure homogenizer (1,000 Bar, 3 passes). According to HPLC measurement for glabridin content, our system is more stable compared with general liposome ones. Capsulated licorice has an enhanced anti-inflammatory effect on account of excellent skin penetration. We also evaluated our final product through image analyzer, particle size analyzer, FF-TEM and chromameter.

PLGA particles and half-shells prepared by double emulsion method: characterization and release profiles of ranitidine (이중 유제 방법으로 제조된 PLGA 미립자들과 반구체:특성과 라니티딘(ranitidine)의 방출 양상)

  • PLGA micro/nano particles encapsulating ranitidine as a hydrophilic model drug were prepared by the double-emulsion solvent evaporation method. Surface morphology investigation by scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed that the emulsification by sonication could produce nanoparticles, whereas microparticles were prepared using high speed homogenizer. Moreover, while nanohalf-shell structure instead of spherical nanoparticle could be produced by adding poloxamer into oil phase (MC) with PLGA 504H, the addition of poloxamer didn't change particle shape in case of PLGA 502H. On the other hand, microparticle with poloxamer had more surface pores than those without poloxamer. The size and polydispersity (PDI) of particles were determined by particle size analyzer. Effective diameters of particles were in the range of $400{\sim}800\;nm$ and $1200{\sim}3300\;nm$ in case of nanoparticles and microparticles, respectively. Encapsulation efficiencies were in the range of $1.2{\sim}2.9%$. The addition of poloxamer produced the particles with higher encapsulation efficiency. In vitro release study in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) at $37^{\circ}C$ showed common large initial burst release. However, the relative slower release profile could be observed in case of microparticles. Poloxamer addition increased the release rate, which was thought to be related to the increased surface area of particles.
