In this work, random homogenization analysis for the effective thermal properties of a three-dimensional composite material with unidirectional fibers is presented by combining the equivalent inclusion method with Random Factor Method (RFM). The randomness of the micro-structural morphology and constituent material properties as well as the correlation among these random parameters are completely accounted for, and stochastic effective thermal properties as thermal expansion coefficients as well as their correlation are then sought. Results from the RFM and the Monte-Carlo Method (MCM) are compared. The impact of randomness and correlation of the micro-structural parameters on the random homogenized results is revealed by two methods simultaneously, and some important conclusions are obtained.
In this paper, the transmission characteristics of the multi-layered composite material with wire mesh and honeycomb core for aircraft applications have been analyzed with the proposed method. The proposed method converts the conductive wire mesh into effective layer, while for the dielectric honeycomb core, effective permittivity has been derived based on volume fraction with the proposed method. The proposed method has been verified through comparison with full-wave simulation and revealed excellent. In addition, the calculation time of the proposed method is a few order of magnitude faster in comparison with the full-wave simulation.

In order to simulate the powder compaction process and to assess the effects of packing randomness and particle arrangement 2-dimensional model of rod array compaction using quasi-random multiparticle array is introduced. The elastic modulus of porous ceramics is computed by the homogenization method. With 3 Al₂O₃ and 3 Al particles the compaction processes associated with the porosities are simulated by the explicit finite element method, based on the elastic modulus found by the homogenization method. The simulation results are compared with both previous analytical ones and experimental measurements. Finally, in order to find the relationship between the friction coefficient of powder particles and the relative density, the sensitivity analysis is performed.

Rock slopes along the road or railroad are affected by temperature and therefore experienced iterative freezing-thawing process between winter and early spring. The purpose of this study is to analyze the stability of rock slopes which are influenced by the deterioration due to the freezing-thawing. The analysis is the homogenization method which evaluates the strength property of discontinuous rock mass, and as a strength failure criterion, Drucker-Prager failure criterion is used. The deterioration property of real rock is obtained by a freezing-thawing laboratory test of tuff and this property of deterioration is quantitated and used as a basic data of stability analysis for rock mass. To evaluate the deterioration depth due to the freezing-thawing in situ rock slope, one dimensional heat conductivity equation is used and as the result I can find that the depth of which is affected by a temperature. After the freezing-thawing depth of model slope is determined, we analyze the pattern of rock mass stength value of rock slope model which excesses the limit of self-load.
This paper presents a linear computational homogenization framework to evaluate the effective (or generalized) electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) of adaptive structures with piezoelectric structural fiber (PSF) composite elements. The PSF consists of a silicon carbide (SiC) or carbon core fiber as reinforcement to a fragile piezo-ceramic shell. For the micro-scale analysis, a micromechanics model based on the variational asymptotic method for unit cell homogenization (VAMUCH) is used to evaluate the overall electromechanical properties of the PSF composites. At the macro-scale, a finite element (FE) analysis with the commercial FE code ABAQUS is performed to evaluate the effective EMCC for structures with the PSF composite patches. The EMCC is postprocessed from free-vibrations analysis under short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) electrodes of the patches. This linear two-scale computational framework may be useful for the optimal design of active structure multi-functional composites which can be used for multi-functional applications such as structural health monitoring, power harvest, vibration sensing and control, damping, and shape control through anisotropic actuation.
This article presents clean core criticality calculations and control rod worth calculations for TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotope production-General Atomics) Mark II research reactor benchmark cores using Winfrith Improved Multi-group Scheme-D/4 (WIMS-D/4) and Program for Reactor In-core Analysis using Diffusion Equation (PRIDE) codes. Cores 133 and 134 were analyzed in 2-D (r, ${\theta}$) and 3-D (r, ${\theta}$, z), using WIMS-D/4 and PRIDE codes. Moreover, the influence of cross-section data was also studied using various libraries based on Evaluated Nuclear Data File (ENDF/B-VI.8 and VII.0), Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion File (JEFF-3.1), Japanese Evaluated Nuclear Data Library (JENDL-3.2), and Joint Evaluated File (JEF-2.2) nuclear data. The simulation results showed that the multiplication factor calculated for all these data libraries is within 1% of the experimental results. The reactivity worth of the control rods of core 134 was also calculated with different homogenization approaches. A comparison was made with experimental and reported Monte Carlo results, and it was found that, using proper homogenization of absorber regions and surrounding fuel regions, the results obtained with PRIDE code are significantly improved.

The investigation, which includes the material homogenization and the calculation of local stress concentration of long-fibrous composites in a microscopic level, has been performed to analyze the behavior of fiber-reinforced composites by using finite element method. In order to carry out this study, the finite element models of composites have been generated by the idealized arrays as square and hexagonal-packed type. In the FE analysis, the boundary conditions of micromechanical finite element method(MFEM) have been defined and verified by comparing with the results from multi-cells, and the effective material properties of composites composed of graphite/epoxy have been also evaluated by rules of mixture. For acquiring the relation between the global and local behaviors of composites, the magnifications of strain, stress, and interfacial stress of composites subjected to a longitudinal and transverse loading respectively have been calculated. And the magnifications have been proposed as the stress concentration in the microscopic level at composite material.
Segregation during solidification and homogenization during thermal exposure in GTD 111 were investigated. The microstructures of as-cast, standard heat-treated, and thermally exposed specimens were observed by SEM. A compositional analysis of each specimen was conducted by EDS. The dendrite core was enriched in W and Co, though lower levels of Ti and Ta were observed. An unexpected phase, in this case like the ${\eta}$ phase, was observed due to segregation near the ${\gamma}-{\gamma}^{\prime}$ eutectic in the standard heat-treated specimen. Segregation also induced microstructural evolution near the ${\gamma}-{\gamma}^{\prime}$ eutectic during the standard heat treatment. A quantitative analysis and microstructural observations showed that the thermal exposure at a high temperature enhanced the chemical homogeneity of the alloy.
Three-scale homogenization procedure is proposed in this paper to provide estimates of the effective thermal conductivities of porous carbon-carbon textile composites. On each scale - the level of fiber tow (micro-scale), the level of yarns (meso-scale) and the level of laminate (macro-scale) - a two step homogenization procedure based on the Mori-Tanaka averaging scheme is adopted. This involves evaluation of the effective properties first in the absence of pores. In the next step, an ellipsoidal pore is introduced into a new, generally orthotropic, matrix to make provision for the presence of crimp voids and transverse and delamination cracks resulting from the thermal transformation of a polymeric precursor into the carbon matrix. Other sources of imperfections also attributed to the manufacturing processes, including non-uniform texture of the reinforcements, are taken into consideration through the histograms of inclination angles measured along the fiber tow path together with a particular shape of the equivalent ellipsoidal inclusion proposed already in Sko ek (1998). The analysis shows that a reasonable agreement of the numerical predictions with experimental measurements can be achieved.

The transient capability of a SP3 based pin-wise core analysis code SPHINCS is developed and verified through the analyses of the C5G7-TD benchmark. Spatial discretization is done by the fine mesh finite difference method (FDM) within the framework of the coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) formulation. Pin size fine meshes are used in the radial fine mesh kernels. The time derivatives of the odd moments in the time-dependent SP3 equations are neglected. The pin homogenized group constants and Super Homogenization (SPH) factors generated from the 2D single assembly calculations at the unrodded and rodded conditions are used in the transient calculations via proper interpolation involving the approximate flux weighting method for the cases that involve control rod movement. The simplifications and approximations introduced in SPHINCS are assessed and verified by solving all the problems of C5G7-TD and then by comparing with the results of the direct whole core calculation code nTRACER. It is demonstrated that SPHINCS yields accurate solutions in the transient behaviors of core power and reactivity.
