  • Purpose: Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of particle size as well as number of pass on surface microstructure and hardness of SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite fabricated by friction stir process (FSP). Method: SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite containing different size of SiC particle (i. e., $2{\mu}m$ and $8{\mu}m$) was fabricated by multi-pass FSP. Microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope and surface hardness was determined by Vickers hardness tester. Results: For all the FSPed specimens with and without hardening particles, grain size was refined due to dynamic recrystallization behavior. Surface hardness was observed to increase with decreasing particle size in the composite layer. Increasing number of FSP pass was effective for homogeneous distribution of the hardening particles and for resulting increase in surface hardness. Conclusion: FSP was effective to modify surface microstructure for improving surface hardness of SiC/AZ31 composite.

  • A new approach to produce nanostructured WC/Co composite powders by a mechanochemical process was made to improve the mechanical properties of advanced hardmetals. Homogeneous spherical W-Co salt powders were made by spray drying of aqueous solution from ammonium metatungstate($(NH_4)_6(H_2W_{12}O_{40})\cdo4H_2O$,AMT) and cobalt nitrate hexahydrate (Co(NO$_3$)$_2$.6$H_2O$). spray dried W-Co salt powders were calcined for 1 hr at $700^{\circ}C$ in atmosphere of air. The oxide powder was mixed with carbon black by ball milling and this mixture was heated with various temperatures and times in $H_2$. The $WO_3/CoWO_4$ composite oxide powders were obtained by calcinations at $700^{\circ}C$. The primary particle size of W/Co composite oxide powders by SEM was 100 nm. The reduction/carburization time decreased with increasing temperatures and carbon additions. The average size of WC particle carburized at $800^{\circ}C$ by TEM was smaller than 50 nm.

  • Carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was fabricated by sol-gel process and followed by spark plasma sintering process. Homogeneous distribution of carbon nanotubes within alumina matrix can be obtained by mixing the carbon nanotubes with alumina sol and followed by condensation into gel. The mixed gel, consisting of alumina and carbon nanotubes, was dried and calcinated into carbon nanotube/alumina composite powders. The composite powders were spark plasma sintered into carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite. The hardness of carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was enhanced due to an enhanced load sharing of homogeneously distributed carbon nanotubes. At the same time, the fracture toughness of carbon nanotube reinforced alumina matrix nanocomposite was enhanced due to a bridging effect of carbon nanotubes during crack propagation.

  • In an effort to construct a structure under the design principle of minimal use of materials for maximum performances, a discrete gradient structure has been introduced in laminate composite systems. Using a sequential linear programming method, the gradient structure of composites to maximize the buckling load was optimized in terms of fiber volume fraction and thickness of each layer. Theoretical optimization results were then verified with experimental ones. The buckling load of laminate composite showed maximum value with the outmost [$0^{\circ}$] layer concentrated by almost all the fibers when the ratio of length to width(aspect ratio) was less than 1.0. But when the aspect ratio was 2.0, the optimum was determined in a structure where the thickness and fiber volume fraction were well balanced in each layer. From the optimization of gradient structure, the optimal fiber volume fraction and thickness of each layer were proposed. Experimental results agreed well with the theoretical ones. Gradient structures have also shown an advantage in the weight reduction of composites compared with the conventional homogeneous structures.

  • In this study, an amperometric non-enzymatic glucose sensor was developed on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode by simply drop-casting the synthesized homogeneous suspension of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets with a copper metal-organic framework (Cu-MOF) composite. Comprehensive analytical methods, including field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and amperometry, were used to investigate the surface and electrochemical characteristics of the h-BN-Cu-MOF composite. The FE-SEM, FT-IR, and XRD results showed that the h-BN-Cu-MOF composite was formed successfully and exhibited a good porous structure. The electrochemical results showed a sensor sensitivity of $18.1{\mu}A{\mu}M^{-1}cm^{-2}$ with a dynamic linearity range of $10-900{\mu}M$ glucose and a detection limit of $5.5{\mu}M$ glucose with a rapid turnaround time (less than 2 min). Additionally, the developed sensor exhibited satisfactory anti-interference ability against dopamine, ascorbic acid, uric acid, urea, and nitrate, and thus, can be applied to the design and development of non-enzymatic glucose sensors.

  • Electrochemical synthesis was employed to prepare a novel hydroxyapatite/graphene (HAP/Gr) composite powder suitable for medical applications as a hard tissue implant (scaffold). The synthesis was performed in a homogeneous dispersion containing Na2H2EDTA·2H2O, NaH2PO4 and CaCl2 with a Ca/EDTA/PO43− concentration ratio of 0.25/0.25/0.15M, along with 0.01 wt% added graphene nanosheets, at a current density of 137 mA cm−2 and pH value of 9.0. The field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy observations of the composite HAP/Gr powder indicated that nanosized hydroxyapatite particles were uniformly placed in the graphene overlay. Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction confirmed graphene incorporation in the HAP/Gr powder. The electrochemically prepared HAP/Gr composite powder exhibited slight antibacterial effect against the growth of the bacterial strain Staphylococcus aureus.

  • In order to obtain the nano size $10wt%Cu-TiO_2$composite powders by mechanical alloying method for useful composite catalysis, the effects of mechanical alloying time on the formationof $10wt%Cu-TiO_2$ composite powders were analyzed. The phase transformation behaviors were experimented as the heat treating temperature increased. Homogeneous 10wt% Cu-rutile type $TiO_2$composite powders were synthesized in 40 hours by mechanical alloying. After 60 hours mechanical alloying 50 nm size $TiO_2$powders were obtained. Both the phase of mechanically alloyed 10 wt% $Cu-TiO_2$ and pure $TiO_2$ powders were not transformed to anatase after annealing at the temperature range between 350 to 500 $^{\circ}C$. The intermetallic compound of $Cu_2Ti_4$O was formed after 10 hours mechanical alloying, however it could be considered that this intemetallic phase dose not prevent the transformation of rutile $TiO_2$ to the anatase phase after heat treatment at the temperature between 350 and $550^{\circ}C$.

  • Nickel-ceramics nanocomposite coatings can be applied as the wear resistance coating, corrosion protection of underlying materials, and decorative coatings. Hence, Nickel based nanocomposite coatings, especially Ni-SiC, have been extensively studied in recent years. However, more often agglomeration problem of the nanoparticles in the nickel matrix can cause deterioration of the mechanical properties rather than improvement. The homogeneous distribution of the nanoparticles in the matrix coating is still being challenging. In this experiment, electrochemical deposition of Ni-SiC composite coating was done in presence of ultrasound. The effects of different ultrasonic powers and frequencies on the nanoparticle dispersion were studied. The electrodeposition was carried out in nickel sulfamate bath by applying pulse current technique. Compared to the conventional mechanical stirring technique to prevent nanoparticles agglomeration and sedimentation during composite electrodeposition, the aid of ultrasonic dispersion along with mechanical stirring has been found to be more effective not only for the nanoparticles dispersion, but also for the mechanical properties of the electrodeposited coatings. Nanoparticles were found to be distributed homogeneously with reduced agglomeration. The microstructure of the composite coating has also been changed, allowing some random orientations of the nickel crystallite grain growths, smooth surface, and finer grains. As a consequence, better mechanical properties of the composites were observed.

  • In this study, 3D Meso-scale finite-element model is presented to study the mechanical behavior of steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete considering the random distribution of fibers in the matrix. The composite comprises two separate parts which are the polymer composite and steel microfibers. The polymer composite is assumed to be homogeneous, which its mechanical properties are measured by performing experimental tests. The steel microfiber-polymer bonding is simulated with the Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) to offer more-realistic assumptions. The CZM parameters are obtained by calibrating the numerical model using the results of the experimental pullout tests on an individual microfiber. The accuracy of the results is validated by comparing the obtained results with the corresponding values attained from testing the steel microfiber-reinforced polymer concrete incorporating 0, 1 and 2% by volume of microfibers, which indicates the excellent accuracy of the current proposed model. The results show that the microfiber aspect ratio has a considerable effect on the mechanical properties of the reinforced polymer concrete. Applying microfibers with a higher aspect ratio improves the mechanical properties of the composite considerably especially when the first crack appears in the polymer concrete specimens.

  • This study considered the experimental parameters (Nano-graphene oxide reinforced polycarbonate, GFRP) under low-velocity impact load and vibration analysis. The effect of nano-graphene oxide (NGO) on a polycarbonate-based composite was studied. Two test procedures were adopted to obtain experimental results, vibration analysis. The mechanical tests were performed on damaged and non-damaged specimens to determine the damaging effect on the composite specimens. After the test was carried out, the effect of NGO was measured and damping factors were ascertained experimentally. 0. 2 wt% NGO was determined as the optimum amount that best affected the Vibration Analysis. The experiments revealed that the composite's damping properties were increased by adding the nanoparticles to 0.25 wt% and decreased slightly for the specimens with the highest nanoparticles content. Cyclic sinus loading was applied at a frequency of 3.5 Hz. This paper study the frequency effect of 3.5khz frequency damage on mechanical results. Found that high frequency will worthlessly affect the fatigue life in NGO/polycarbonate composite. In 3.5 Hz frequency, it was chosen to decrease the heat by frequency. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs were used to investigate the distribution of NGO on the polycarbonate matrix and revealed a homogeneous mixture of nano-composites and strong bonding between NGO and the polycarbonate which increased the damping properties and decreased vibration. Finally, experimental modal analysis was conducted after the high-velocity impact damage process to investigate the defect on the NGO polycarbonate composites.
