Health Functional Food Use and Related Variables Among the Middle-Aged in Korea (우리나라 중년기의 건강기능식품 섭취에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구)

  • Various types of health functional foods (HFF) are popularly used among middle-aged. We surveyed 946 middle-aged in Korea for HFF use and significant variables for their HFF use including demographic characteristics, health related variables and nutritional beliefs. The use prevalence of HFF was 58.9%, and among all types of HFF, red ginseng products were taken most frequently, followed by nutritional supplements, ginseng products > mushroom products. HFF was taken more frequently in subjects from high monthly family income (p < .001), and in those from families with a high socioeconomic status (p < .001) in comparison to each corresponding group. Mean age of users was higher than nonusers (p < .001). Self concern about health (p < .001) and usage ratio of HFF by family (p < .001) were higher in users than in nonusers of HFF. Total dietary assessment score was not different in two groups, and users had a more positive view concerning the potential health benefit of HFF than nonusers (p < .001). Most users of HFF took HFF when they were healthy (52.8%) and experienced a little effect through the HFF use (51.2%). Most users of HFF obtained the information on HFF through family and relatives (30.5%) and most of them purchased HFF at pharmacy or oriental medicine clinics (44.5%). HFF users preferred multivitamin and Ca-supplements most among the vitamin mineral supplements belonged to HFF. Given the widespread use of HFF and inappropriate usage of HFF among subjects, the proper use of these products for the contribution to their optimal nutrition and overall health is a subject that should be formed through practical nutrition education considering the various variables affecting their HFF use.

The Study on Domestic Fashion Information Service Industry for Systematization of Fashion Trend Information Planning Process (패션정보기획의 체계화를 위한 국내 패션정보산업의 고찰)

  • The field of textile and fashion is regard to be sensitive to trend, however, the professional fashion information planning company for trend forecasting has not settled down in Korea. This study was designed to propose systemizing for fashion trend information planning in domestic fashion information service market. The empirical research was conducted by analysing in-depth interview data and news-scrap contents about each fashion information planning company. The result are as follows; First, fashion information service showed a little difference according to the type of fashion information companies, but they provided not only general fashion trends but also external market environmental information, survey-based consumer information and various segmented market research reports including academic information. Second, the fashion information planning process is largely divided into 3 stages; trend analysis, trend forecasting, trend application. The trend application step is the stage which connects the fashion information service industry to the fashion business. Thirdly, as a result of the competitive power evaluation for fashion information planning, the domestic fashion information planning companies came to reveal the fact that the possibility of carrying out and information analysis power were weak, however, how to present trend information had a relatively competitive. Consequently, this study is expected to play a role in understanding the importance of fashion trend information, and further ahead it would be helpful to organize the curriculum of fashion information planning subject in order to educate the future fashion executives.

Sugar Intake and Dietary Behavior of Children with and without School Lunch Program (급식과 비급식국민학교 아동의 식행동 및 설탕섭취실태 비교)

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the dietary behavior and sugar intake of korean school children. The subject were 131 school lunch program children and 149 non school lunch program children lived in Soung Nam city. Sugar intake, food intake, dietary behavior and anthropometric measurement were studied through personal interview using 24-hour recall dietary data and records. Total daily energy and nutrient intake of children were higher than RDAs except for intake of Calcium and vitamin A. The nutrients intake of school lunch program children were significantly higher than that of non school lunch program children (p<0.05). The range of daily sugar intake was 10 g to 220 g and the total daily sugar intake was $63.0{\pm}37.4\;g$. Sugar intake of school lunch program children ($51.4{\pm}25.7\;g$) was significantly lower than non school lunch program children ($73.1{\pm}42.9\;g$) (p<0.0001). The more sugar intake increase more intake of Energy, Fat and Carbohydrate. The result of stepwise multiple regression analysis using the sugar intake of children as dependent variable, energy, vitamin $B_2$, protein, niacin, calcium school lunch program, education of fathers are significant explanatory variables, explaining 44.8% of variation. Result of this study suggest that school lunch program is desirable for good dietary behavior and decreation of sugar intake of school children.

The Effectiveness of the Parent Education Program through Play in Improving the Relationships between Mothers and Children (놀이를 통한 부모교육 프로그램이 어머니-자녀 관계 증진에 미치는 효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of the parent education program through play to improve the relationships between mothers and children. The subject of this study consisted of 30 mothers with 4-7 aged child attending S-day-care center located in Ik-San. In order to examine the effectiveness of the parent education program through play, two groups were divided into 15 participants each. The experimental group participated in the parent education program for total 8 sessions(2 sessions per week over the 4 weeks) while the control group didn't. The instrument were 'Maternal Affection & Control Resources Scale developed by Cho, Bok Hee(1991) and 'Teacher-Child relationship Scale' by Pinata & Steinberg. Teacher-Child relationship Scale was modified to be appropriate for use with this program. Parental acceptance level was measured by modified Parental Acceptance Scale (P.P.A.S.) by porter(1954). The data were analyzed by SPSSWIN program. The statistical methods for data analysis were frequency, t-test. paired t-test. The main results of this study were as follows : First, the mothers who participated in the parent education program through play showed improvement in affectionate attitudes than before. Second, the mothers who participated in the parent education program through play have been improved in familiarity and have been decreased in conflict of relationships of mother-child than those who did not participated in. Third, the mothers who participated in parent education program through play improve the recognition on respect to children's emotion, emotional expression right, uniqueness of children's temperament and needs to children's independency and autonomy.

A Study on SElf-Recognized Monosodium Glutamate Symptom Complex in Eating Out of Housewives in Inchone (외식관련 MSG복합증후군 자각경험에 관한 연구-인천지역 주부를 중심으로-)

  • This study was carried out through questionnaire in order to investigate the self-recognized monosodium glutamate (MSG) symptom complex in the eating out of housewives. The subjects were 503 housewives in Inchon and the results are summarized as follows. As for age, 51.9% of subjects were over 40 years old. Also 60.0% of the subjects received a high school education. As for occupation, full-time housewives accounted for 63.7%. Monthly household income of most subjects were 1 million won or more, and monthly food expenses for most subjects were over 300 thousand won or more. Also 71.0% of the subjects lived in apartments. As for frequency of eating out, 69.5% of subjects ate out I~2 times a month, 21.6% did 3~4 times a month, 4.5% did 7 times or more/month and 3.6% did 5~6 times a month. The higher education level, family income or food expense of subjects were, the more they ate out. Most subjects selected the menu of eating out according to preference of family. Also 63.6% of the subjects considered the amount of MSG in eating out. As for menus containing high amount of MSG, 55.8% of subject answered Korean dishes, 31.1% did Chinese dishes. After eating out, 25.1% of subjects perceived MSG symptom complex, such as thirst, tiredness and rapid heart beat, etc. Therefore, it may be necessary to reduce the amount of MSG in eating out and to develop safe and delicious menus of eating out using various natural foods.

A Case Study on the Costume Culture of the Head Family for Adolescent′s Spot Experience Studying (청소년의 종가 생활문화 현장학습프로그램 개발을 위한 종가 복식문화 사례 연구 -전남 함평 종가를 대상으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the cases of the family head's costume culture and to apply them to field experience education of adolescent's home economics subject. To examine the family head's costume culture, women in the family head in the Hampyeong area, Jeollanam-do were selected and interviewed. The focus of examining the family head's costume culture was on the life story of the family head, the reason to wear or possess such costume, and a motive of making. The findings of the head family's costume culture suggests that the head family of the Mos of Hampyeong had unique shroud making and custom. Also it was found that the eldest daughters-in-law of the Lees of Hampyeong have horizontally exchanged the information of the family head's costume with village women of the same family. They have initiated their costume culture directly through their daughters and it had the great influence on after-ages. The learning program for youth to experience the head family's costume culture consisted of four subjects:(l)Educating the family head's traditional living culture including etiquette training, (2)head family village walk, (3)experiencing the family head's clothes life including natural dyeing and sewing, and (4)a field trip of Hampyeong Local Life Culture Museum. For a model experience of the family head's costume life culture, three families with middle and high schoolers participated in 8- hour experience learning program. To examine the effect of learning program to experience the family head's costume culture, youth and their parents who participated in the program were asked open-ended questions, which included the content validity of experience learning, impressive experience, model experience level(difficulty), and expected effect after a model experience. As a result, their responses were found positive.

A Case Study on the Co-Child Care Sharing Space of the Healthy Family Support Center: Focusing on the Physical Environment of Interior Space in Incheon (건강가정지원센터의 공동육아나눔터에 관한 사례연구: 인천소재 공동육아나눔터의 물리적 실내공간환경을 중심으로)

  • Recently in South Korea, family-friendly living environment in resident communities have emerged as an important issue in addressing problems created by personalized and fragmented family in urban areas. Since their foundation in 2005, Healthy Family Support Centers provided a variety of community activities for both parents and children through the Co-Child Care Sharing Programs. That being said, it is certain that the Healthy Family Support Centers play a central role in making a family-friendly environment. This study surveyed the physical environment of the co-child care sharing space and suggested further improvement. The content of this survey represents the characteristics of co-child care sharing space in Incheon such as operation status, physical space, prepared facilities, and preference for facilities. This study also explored the field of two co-child sharing spaces (Bupyung-gu and Seo-gu) as an example case. The subject of this study was 14 co-child sharing spaces of nine Healthy Family Support Centers in Incheon investigated from July 2014 to October 2014. This study indicated three results: first, the size of the co-child care spaces, their composition and facilities are very different from each center and require standards and guidelines for the co-child sharing space in regards to physical space, composition, and facilities. Second, co-child sharing space should be provided with individual special programs and diversified activities in addition to playing activities. Third, many healthy family support centers operate over two co-child sharing spaces along with an out-located co-child sharing space that require mutual organizing and operational networking between each co-child sharing space to effectively share programs.

Performance Dress Purchasing Behavior and Design Preference of Pianists (피아노 연주자의 연주복 구매행동과 디자인 선호도)

  • The purpose of this research is that to study of musical performer's purchasing behavior, satisfaction and design preference, and to give the information for better performance costume market based on that result. The target for the survey is limited only for above 4th grade female students and have experienced more than three times of performances. Total 364 questionnaires are used for this research. The SPSS was used for the analysis. The results were, first, in the survey of place of purchasing, specialty shop for musical performance shop was the most. The most group for the budget that they spent was under 100,000 Won. Rational price for costume would be 150,000-300,000 Won. Most people purchase costume before 2 weeks and compare 3-4 stores mostly. There were not many complaints about being comfort for costume itself. The preference for costume was different depends on not only scale of performance but also whether solo, duet or trio or more. Also harmony with other person costume was most consideration factor when they perform duet or more. For the choice of shop factor following were considered the most important; various selections, kindness of sales persons and possibility for trying various costumes. However, locations of shop or delivery service were not important relatively. For the choice of costume factor, design color, comfort and functionality were considered the most important but price, quality and decoration were not. For 'the satisfaction after purchase costume' factor, people's opinions, best appearance on the stage and meeting image with themselves were considered the most important. Second, on the subject for 'design preference of costume based on type of performance', people chose different color of dress depends on what types of performance. In case of solo, they prefer vivid primary color; in case of trio or more, they prefer black; in case of duet, they prefer pastel tone. As for preference of sleeve design, all of them prefer non-sleeve type.

A Study on the Regional Characteristics of Korean Chotkal -The kinds and materials of chotkal- (우리나라 젓갈의 지역성 연구 (1) -젓갈의 종류와 주재료-)

  • This paper is a part of the regional characteristics of Korean chotkal. The kinds and materials of Korean chotkals are studied by interviewing local people living in 142 different regions which are bigger than 'myon' in size. Regions are classified according to the structural style of commoner's house. Regional characteristics of chotkal are analyzed and interpreted with natural environmental factor. The rest of my further interested subject will be followed in later issues ; the ways of preservation, period of fermentation according to the regional characteristics and uses of Korean chotkal. The results of this study can be summerized as follows, 1. There are 145 different kinds. 2. Raw materials of 145 kinds of chotkal are devided roughly into five groups ; (1) fishes in 87 kinds (2) Pelecypoda and Gastropoda in 14 kinds (3) Cephalopoda in 10 Kinds (4) Crustacea in 32 kinds and (5) Holothuroidea and Echinoidea in 2 kinds. They can also be classified according to the parts of individual material ; (1) body or flesh in 118 kinds (2) internal organs in 15 kinds and (3) eggs in 12 kinds. Regions are devided into four provinces ; 'Kwanso', 'Chungbu', 'Nambu', and 'Kwanbuk' in which the number of different kinds of chotkal are 32, 41, 99 and 34, respectively. Raw materials vary because of the distribution of marine life in different regions. Fishes and Cephalopoda are used in all four regions, Pelecypoda and Gastropoda in 'Kwanso', 'Chungbu' and western part of 'Nambu' regions. Different species of Crustacea used in each different regions ; sea crab and sea shrimp in the western coastal area, fresh water crab in the field area, fresh water shrimp in 'Chollado', mantis crab at 'Shihung-gun' in 'Kyonggi-do', Holothuroidea and Echinoidea are used in 'Nambu' regions. Chotkal are not used at all in six local districts which are located in inland areas where the transportation is inconvenient.

A Study on the Nutritional Knowledge, Food Habits, Food Preferences and Nutrient Intakes of Urban Middle-Aged Women (도시지역 중년기 여성의 영양지식, 식습관, 식품기호도 및 영양소 섭취실태에 관한 조사연구 -대구 및 포항지역을 중심으로-)

  • This nutritional survey was conducted from February 8 to March 10, 1994, in order to investigate the nutritional knowledge, food habits, nutritional attitude, food preferences and nutrient intakes of urban middle-aged women living in Daegu and Pohang district. The subjects of this survey were 164 urban middle-aged women living in Daegu and Pohang Area. The completely answered questionnaires were analyzed for nutritional knowledge, food habits, nutritional attitude, food preference and nutrient intakes of urban middle-aged women. The results obtained are summarized as follows: The subjects had a high level of perceived knowledge (82.9%), that is the knowledge that each subject believed she had, but the accuracy of the knowledge was only 66.1%. The average nutrition knowledge score was 8.26 out of possible 15 points, and food habit score was 5.50 out of 10 points. Most of the subjects belonged to 'Fair' or 'Good' food habit group, which is considered to be relatively good. With increasing age, the percentage of perceived knowledge, accuracy, and nutrition knowledge score were getting lower. But food habit score and nutritional attitude score were getting higher at 40's women than 30's women. The correlation between nutritional knowledge score and food habit score was low (r=0.0748). The correlation between nutritional attitude score and food habit score was low, too (r=-0.0653). Food preferences for kimchi, potato, cooked rice, beef, noodle, cabbage and milk were high. Average calorie and protein intake of the subjects were $1967.4{\pm}27.8\;Kcal$, $75.8{\pm}1.4\;g$ respectively. Carbohydrate, protein and fat ratio on energy composition was 63.3%:15.5%:21.2%.
