  • For the DC-free encoding of source data, the Guided Scrambling (GS) technique is widely used as multi-mode coding in the optical data storage system. For DC-suppression GS coding in the holographic data storage system, the conservative array and balanced coding criteria are proposed. In this paper, equivalent integer programming models are developed to determine the optimal control bits for the minimum digital sum value (MDSV), conservative array, and balanced coding criteria. Using the proposed integer programming models, we compare the performance of GS encoding for the various combination of control bit/array sizes and scrambling polynomials.

  • Page-oriented holographic data storage (HDS) is very sensitive to the disturbances. However, vibration effect by disc imbalance can be ignored because data pages are recorded and retrieved with stop-go rotation. Therefore, just estimating de-track due to eccentricity of disc is enough to construct stable track servo system. In this paper, propose the spacing of track servo patterns optimization method using Least Mean Square (LMS) estimation algorithm. Through the patterns spacing optimization, storage density maximize can be achieved.

  • Multi-level holographic data storage is a candidate for the next generation data storage system, since it can store more than one bit per pixel. It is possible to increase the number of codewords if the number of levels is increased, and the code with an appropriate selection of codewords can also increase the minimum distance. In this paper, we propose three multi-level modulation codes of the code rate 1 bit/pixel and compare the performance according to the minimum distance. The result shows that the code with small number of levels is better than that of large number of levels because it is hard to detect threshold value.

  • A control method for the angle servo of reference beam during reading recoded data images of a holographic data storage system is presented. The recording scheme with angle offset is adopted in order to verify the proposed angle servo. Using this recording scheme, the angle error signal is generated and we can implement the angle servo. Experiments have been performed on recording and reading data images to compensate Bragg angle mismatch.

  • In this paper, we introduce modified parity coding methods to reduce the errors caused by spatial beam intensity variations in a holographic data storage system. We explained the encoding and decoding process of the conventional parity coding and the modified parity coding techniques. We compared the bit-error-rate (BER) performances of the conventional parity coding and the modified parity coding techniques from experimental evaluation.

  • There are two important trends in the modern information society, including digital networking and ubiquitous environment. Thus it is strongly required to develop new information storage devices such as high density storages to match the increased data capacity and small size storage devices to be applied to the mobile multimedia electronics. So far, many approaches have been studied for the high density memory, including the holographic memory, super-RENS and near-field recording using solid immersion lens (SIL) or nano-probe for the ODD (Optical Disk Drive) system, and the perpendicular magnetic recording and heat-assisted magnetic recording for the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) system. In addition, new mobile storage devices have been prepared using 0.85" HDD and 30mm ODD systems from a lot of foreign and domestic companies and institutes. In this paper, the recent technology trend for the next generation information storage system is summarized to offer a research motivation and encouragement to new researchers in this field with an emphasis on the technical issues of the increase of data capacity and decrease of device size.

  • A holographic data storage (HDS) has some advantages of high storage capacity, fast transmission, and short access time. However, there are two major concerns with the system which are two-dimensional (2D) inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-page interference (IPI). Thus, this paper proposes a 4-level 6/9 modulation code which mitigate inter-symbol interference (ISI).
