In this study, we used prepared a cylindrical module consisting 100 hollow fibers of commercialized (hydrophobic) polyethylene membrane of $0.4{\mu}m$ pore size and systematically studied performance of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and sweep gas membrane distillation (SGMD) in terms of variation of permeate flux and salt rejection with respect to temperature drop across the membrane, salt concentrations in feed, and flow rates of cooling water and sweep gas. SGMD was regarded as DCMD with a sweep gas layer between permeate-side membrane surface and cooling water. Sweep gas flow decreases the permeate flux from that of DCMD by providing an additional gas-layer resistance. We compared DCMD and SGMD performance by using mass balance with a fitting parameter (${\omega}$), indicating fraction of permeate flow rate.
Membranes are used in most processes of biopharmaceutical production. It is used for pretreatment of other processes, separation of impurities in the process, virus removal, control of products concentration and buffer solution exchange. Virus filters play an important role in ensuring product efficacy and stability because viral contamination of biopharmaceuticals for humans is a sensitive issue that is directly related to serious clinical outcomes. Virus filters typically have complex multilayer structures made of various polymers such as surface-modified PVDF, PES, CRC. Depending on the manufacturer, filters have different pore structures and shapes, such as symmetric or asymmetric, and is used in the form of pleated membrane, flat sheets or hollow fibers. Virus filters are exclusively supplied by few foreign companies such as Asahi Kasei, Millipore, Pall and Sartorius. Replacing virus filters can be time consuming and expensive, including approval from regulatory agencies through validation. As localization has become important due to Japan's recent export regulations, it is necessary to increase the degree of technical independence.

A two-stage procedure is ideal for getting a successful osseointegration. But if a one-stage procedure can achieve a similar osseointegration, the one-stage procedure has several advantages. The purpose of this study was to observe the initial bone formation and bone remodeling of open type (nonsubmerged) and closed type (submerged) titanium implants. Eight ITI hollow-screws and eight Branemark fixtures were divided into two groups (submerged and nonsubmerged) and were installed on the lower jaws of four mongrel dogs. The animals were sacrificed three months later and bone sections with implants were processed for light microscopic and fluorescent microscopic observation. The results were as follows : 1 There was no significant difference in bone-to-implant contact between submerged and nonsubmerged implants. 2. Smooth surface titanium implants showed more bone-to-implant contact than that of titanium plasma coated implants histologically. 3. Under fluorescent microscopy, the active bone remodeling and new bone formation were observed in the interface zone. 4. Under fluorescent microscopy, submerged and nonsubmerged implants had no difference in bone remodeling pattern, and intramembranous bone formation was more prominent. 5. The connective tissue fibers orienting perpendicularly toward implant surface were oberved in the neck of implants.
The oil separation is effectively performed from the oil containing alkaline cleaner solution by using a backflushed ultrafiltration system, where hollow fibers commercially made by polyacrylonitrile copolymer are bundled. Backflushing to reduce membrane fouling during crossflow ultrafiltration is investigated. Experimental observations allow us to understand the behavior of permeate flux according to the relative operating conditions, and determine the optimum condition of normal operation and backflushing. The maximum improvement of net permeate flux owing to backflushing was found to be about 23 % with the condition of 10 min/40 sec for the cycle of normal/backflushing operations. Note that, however, the maintenance of stable permeate flux is lost as the duration of normal operation is increased. The permeate flux depends on both the backflushing pressure and the feed flow rate. It is obvious that there is a critical velocity of feed flow, in which permeate flux is practically independent of backflushing pressure. Above this critical value, the permeate flux is proportional to an appropriate power of the backflushing pressure, $\Delta P_{back}^n$, where exponent n is enhanced with increasing feed velocity.

In this study, a multi-staged pilot-scale membrane plant was constructed and operated for the separation of $CO_2$ from LNG-fired boiler flue gas of 1,000 $Nm^3/day$. The target purity and recovery ratio of $CO_2$ required for the pilot plant were 99% and 90%, respectively. For this purpose, we previously developed the asymmetric polyethersulfone hollow fibers and evaluated the effects of operating pressure and feed concentration of $CO_2$ on separation performance[1,2]. The permeation data obtained were also analyzed in relation with the numerical simulation data using counter-current flow model[3,4]. Based on these results, we designed and prepared the demonstration plant consisting of dehumidification process and four-staged membrane process. The operation results using this plant were compared with the numerical simulation results on multi-staged membrane process. The experimental results matched well with the numerical simulation data. The concentration and the recovery ratio of $CO_2$ in the final stage permeate stream were ranged from $95{\sim}99%$ and $70{\sim}95%$, respectively, depending on the operating conditions. This study demonstrated the applicability of the membrane-based pilot plant for $CO_2$ recovery from flue gas.
An oxygenator is a very important artificial organ and widely used for patients with lung failure or during open heart surgery. Although an oxygenator has been widely studied worldwide to enhance its efficiency, studies on oxygenators, in particular when using a pulsatile blood flow, are domestically limited. Therefore, a new oxygenator was developed in the lab and animal experimental results are described in the paper. The oxygenator is composed of polycarbonate housing and polypropylene hollow fibers. It has a total length of 400 mm and a surface area of $1.7 m^2$. The animal experiment lasted for 4 hours. The blood flow rate was set to 2 L/min and a pulsatile blood pump, T-PLS (Twin-Pulse Life Support), was used. Samples were drawn at the oxygenator's inlet and outlet. The total hemoglobin (Hb), saturation oxygen ($sO_2$), and partial oxygen pressure ($pO_2$), partial $CO_2$ pressure ($pCO_2$), and plasma bicarbonate ion concentration ($HCO_3^-$) were measured. The oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates were also calculated based on the experimental data in order to estimate the oxygenator's gas transfer efficiency. The oxygen and carbon dioxide transfer rates were $16.4{\pm}1.58$ and $165.7{\pm}10.96 mL/min$, respectively. The results showed a higher carbon dioxide transfer rate was achieved with the oxygenator. Also, the mean inlet and outlet blood pressures were 162.79 and 137.92 mmHg, respectively. The oxygenator has a low pressure drop between its inlet and outlet. The aim of own preliminary study was to make a new oxygenator and review its performance when applying a pulsatile blood pump thus, confirming the possibility of a new oxygenator suitable for pulsatile flow.
Pressurized membrane module systems, including hollow fiber type of Microfiltration (MF) and Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes are being increasingly used in drinking water treatment due to their high removal efficiency of pathogen. However, when fibers are damaged in pressurized membrane system, the pathogen will be able to penetrate the membrane. Therefore, it is essential to guarantee the regulatory requirements for water quality by an effective on-line or off-line condition integrity monitoring methods. Recently, pressure decay test (PDT) which is one of membrane integrity tests has been reflected to drinking water treatment plants using pressurized membrane module. In this paper, three different method were used to perform PDT and three different sensitivity values were analyzed through experiments. Three types of direct integrity test methods were applied to pressure feed side, filtrate side and bidirectional pressure decay test. The results of these experiments show that the sensitivity was increasing when the volume of pressurized gas was decreasing. The sensitivity is inversely proportional to the gas volume. Furthermore, it is desirable to increase pressure difference between feed side and permeate side in order to achieve higher sensitivity in the PDT by membrane damage.
Chrysotile is a 1:1 sheet silicate mineral belonging to serpentine group. It has been highlighted studies because of uses, shapes and structural characteristics of the fibrous chrysotile. However, it was designated as Class 1 carcinogen, so high attentions were being placed on detoxification studies of chrysotile. The objectives of this study were to investigate changes of mineralogical characteristics of chrysotile and to suggest detoxification mechanism of chrysotile by thermal decomposition. Samples for this study were obtained from LAB Chrysotile mine in Canada. The samples were heated in air in the range of 600 to $1,300^{\circ}C$. Changes of mineralogical characteristics such as crystal structure, shape, and chemical composition of the chrysotile fibers were examined by TG-DTA, XRD, FT-IR, TEM-EDS and SEM-EDS analyses. As a result of thermal decomposition, the fibrous chrysotile having hollow tube structure was dehydroxylated at $600-650^{\circ}C$ and transformed to disordered chrysotile by removal of OH at the octahedral sheet (MgOH) (Dehydroxylation 1). Upon increasing temperature, it was transformed to forsterite ($Mg_2SiO_4$) at $820^{\circ}C$ by rearrangement of Mg, Si and O (Dehydroxylation 2). In addition, crystal structure of forsterite had begun to transform at $800^{\circ}C$, and gradually grown 3-dimensionally to enstatite ($MgSiO_3$) by recrystallization after the heating above $1,100^{\circ}C$. And then finally transformed to spherical minerals. This study showed chrysotile structure was collapsed about $600-700^{\circ}C$ by dehydroxylation. And then the fibrous chrysotile was transformed to forsterite and enstatite, as non-hazardous minerals. Therefore, this study indicates heat treatment can be used to detoxification of chrysotile.
