  • This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydroelastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based on the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energies and compared with the experimental results. • In this paper we concentrate on overall direction of the gaze based on a head pose for human computer interaction. To decide a gaze direction of user in a image, it is important to pick up facial feature exactly. For this, we binarize the input image and search two eyes and the mouth through the similarity of each block ( aspect ratio, size, and average gray value ) and geometric information of face at the binarized image. We create a imaginary plane on the line made by features of the real face and the pin hole of the camera to decide the head orientation. We call it the virtual facial plane. The position of a virtual facial plane is estimated through projected facial feature on the image plane. We find a gaze direction using the surface normal vector of the virtual facial plane. This study using popular PC camera will contribute practical usage of gaze tracking technology.

  • In the present study, the numerical prediction of the oil amount leaked from the hole of a damaged tank is investigated using the improved MPS (Moving Particle Semi-implicit) method, which was originally proposed by Koshizuka and Oka (1996) for incompressible flow. The governing equations, which consist of the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations, are solved by Lagrangian moving particles, and all terms expressed by differential operators should be replaced by the particle interaction models based on a Kernel function. The simulation results are validated though the comparison with the analytic solution based on Torricelli's equilibrium relation. Furthermore, a series of numerical simulations under the various conditions are performed in order to estimate more accurately the initial amount of leaked oil.

  • A characterization of turbulent reacting flows has proved difficult owing to the complex interaction between turbulence, mixing, and combustion chemistry. There are many types of time scales in turbulent flame which can determine flame structure. This counter jet type premixed burner produces high intensity turbulence. The goal is to gain better insights into the flame structures at high turbulence. 6 propane/air flames gave been studied with high velocity fluctuation in bundle type nozzle and in one hole type nozzle. By measuring velocity fluctuation, turbulent intensity and integral length scale are obtained. And sets of OH LIF images were processed to see flame structure of the mean flame curvatures and flame lengths for comparison with turbulence intensity and turbulent length scales. The results show that the decrease in nozzle size generates smaller flow eddy and mean curvatures of the flame fronts, and a decrease in Damkohler number estimated from flow time scale measurement.

  • Graphene, a single atomic layer of sp2-bonded carbon, shows substantial potential for various applications. Chemical manipulation of its electronic properties will be of great importance. In this study, we have investigated interaction between graphene and organic molecular layer of tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ), a strong electron acceptor. F4-TCNQ films of varying thickness were evaporated onto graphene mechanically exfoliated on SiO2/Si substrates. F4-TCNQ molecules increase the frequencies of Raman G and 2D bands of graphene while decreasing the linewidth of G band and 2D/G intensity ratio, which is consistent with increase of hole density in graphene. These results exemplify the possibility of chemical tuning of electronic properties of graphene.

  • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) includes high voltage generator, electron gun, column, secondary electron detector, scan coil system and image grabber. Column includes electron lenses (condenser lens and objective lens). Condenser lens generates fringe field, makes focal length and control spot size. Focal length represents property of lens. Objective lens control focus. Most of the electrons emitted from the filament, are captured by the anode. The portion of the electron current that leaves the gun through the hole in the anode is called the beam current. Electron beam probe is called the focused beam on the specimen. Because of the lens and aperture, the probe current becomes smaller than the beam current. It generate various signals(backscattered electron, secondary electron) in an interaction with the specimen atoms. In this paper, we describe the result of research to develop the core elements for low-resolution SEM.

  • We investigate the electronic and magnetic properties in Cu-doped InN with the N vacancy ($V_N$) from first principles calculations. There is the long-range ferromagnetic order between two Cu atoms, attributed to the hole-mediated double exchange through the strong p-d interaction between the Cu atom and neighboring N atom. The system of $V_N$ defect in Cu-doped InN has the lowest formation energy. Due to the hybridization between the Cu-3d and $V_N$ states, the spin-polarization on the Cu atoms in the InN lattice is reduced by $V_N$ defect. So, it shows a weak ferromagnetic behavior.

  • We present the detailed image decomposition of Hubble Space Telescope archival images for 235 nearby (z < 0.35) unobscured type 1 AGNs. It allows us to perform robust measurements of host galaxy properties and AGN luminosity contribution. We examine how the host properties correlate with AGN properties. Broad line type 1 and radio-loud AGNs are hosted preferentially by early type galaxies. Narrow line type 1 AGNs show a low fraction of tidal interaction, that might suggest the secular evolution may play an important role for triggering AGN activity, while the fraction of merging hosts is rather higher in luminous AGNs. We compare the nucleus luminosity and bulge luminosity and find that either our sample might have a smaller zero point in the M(BH)-L(bulge) relation (i.e. less massive black hole at a given bulge luminosity) relation compared to the normal galaxies or Eddington ratio of our sample could be systematically overestimated.
