When a crack in the plate with a circular hole approaches to the hole, the large stress concentration phenomenon appears at the boundary of the circular hole and the crack tip. As a numerical analysis method for the stress concentration in a structure, the Finite Element Method has been used. In this paper, however, the Boundary Element Method is employed, which may reduce the numbers of input data and the calculating time when compared with the Finite Element Method. A finite flat plate having a crack between the two circular holes is chosen as a model in this study. The results by the Boundary Element Method are compared with those of the Boundary collocation Method by Newman, which are already well established. And the structural behavior near the circular hole and at the crack tip is also investigated.
Bonded dissimilar materials are being increasingly used in automobiles, aircraft, rolling stocks, electronic devices and engineering structures. Bonded dissimilar materials have several material advantages over homogeneous materials such as high strength, high reliability, light weight and vibration reduction. Due to their increased use it is necessary to understand how these materials behave under stress conditions. One important area is the analysis of the stress intensity factors for interface cracks emanating from circular holes in bonded dissimilar materials. In this study, the bonded scarf joint is selected for analysis using a model which has comprehensive mixed-mode components. The stress intensity factors were determined by using the boundary element method (BEM) on the interface cracks. Variations of scarf angles and crack lengths emanating from a centered circular hole and an edged semicircular hole in the Al/Epoxy bonded scarf joints of dissimilar materials are computed. From these results, the stress intensity factor calculations are verified. In addition, the relationship between scarf angle variation and the effect by crack length and holes are discussed.

This paper is concerned with the experimental investigation of transverse vibration characteristics in water of rectangular plates having an inner free cutout. Systematic experiments are carried out to investigate effects of the surrounding water on the added mass and the natural frequency of the plates due to the changes of the aspect ratio, hole size and eccentricity. The main subject is the clamped rectangular plate with a circular hole. For the purpose of comparative evaluations, some other common-type boundary conditions and hole shapes such as ellipses and rectangles are also investigated. Some of the results obtain are as follows; 1) For each given aspect ratio of the plate, there is a hole area ratio which gives a minimum value of the nondimensional frequency parameter for each mode. The hole area ratio increases as the order number of the mode increases. 2) The nondimensinal mass-increment parameter decreases as the aspect ration or the order number of the mode increases. For each given aspect ratio, the parameter the fundamental mode decreases monotonically as the hole area ratio increase. In cases of the second and higher order modes, however, each mode has a hole area ratio which gives a maximum value of the parameter for each aspect ratio more then 2/3. 3) Comparing elliptic holes with rectangular ones with same hole area ratio, nondimensional frequency parameters are almost same for each given ratio of the shorter axises to the longer one. 4) The influences of difference in boundary condion on nondimensional frequency parameters in water are similar to those in air.
Minimizing the stress concentration around hypotrochoid hole in finite metallic plates under in-plane loading is an important consideration in engineering design. In the analysis of finite metallic plate, the effective factors on stress distribution around holes include curvature radius of the corner of the hole, hole orientation, plate's aspect ratio, and hole size. This paper aims to investigate the impact of these factors on stress analysis of finite metallic plate with central hypotrochoid hole. To obtain the lowest value of stress around a hypotrochoid hole, a swarm intelligence optimization method named ant lion optimizer is used. In this study, with the hypothesis of plane stress circumstances, analytical solution of Muskhelishvili's complex variable method and conformal mapping is employed. The plate is taken into account to be finite, isotropic and linearly elastic. By applying suitable boundary conditions and least square boundary collocation technique, undefined coefficients of stress function are found. The results revealed that by choosing the above-mentioned factor correctly, the lowest value of stress would be obtained around the hole allowing to an increment in load-bearing capacity of the structure.

Bleeding away a part of the boundary layer next to the wall is an effective method for controlling boundary-layer distortions from incident shock waves or curvature in geometry. When the boundary-layer flow is supersonic, the physics of bleeding with and without an incident shock wave is more complicated than just the removal of lower momentum fluid next to the wall. This paper reviews CFD studies of shock-wave/boundary-layer interactions on a flat plate with bleed into a plenum through a single hole, three holes in tandem, and four rows of staggered holes in which the simulation resolves not just the flow above the plate, but also the flow through each bleed hole and the plenum. The focus is on understanding the nature of the bleed process.

Numerical study of the influence of the boundary layer of micro-supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate with a hole was performed, to investigate the role of gas jet to eject melted materials from the cut zone in the laser machining. The detailed shock structures and the information of the mass flow rate through the hole were compared to the results of the previous study, in which the effects of boundary layer inside nozzle was not accounted. It was found that the boundary layer inside the micro- nozzle introduced stronger Mach disc over the machining zone, and thus that the mass flow rate through the hole decreased.

Energy-efficient routing protocol is an important task in a wireless sensor network that is used for monitoring and control by wirelessly collecting information obtained from sensor nodes deployed in various environments. Various routing techniques have been studied for this, but it is also necessary to consider WSN environments with specific situations and conditions. In particular, due to topographical characteristics or specific obstacles, a hole where sensor nodes are not deployed may exist in most WSN environments, which may result in inefficient routing or routing failures. In this case, the geographical routing-based hall bypass routing method using GPS functions will form the most efficient path, but sensors with GPS functions have the disadvantage of being expensive and consuming energy. Therefore, we would like to find the boundary node of the hole in a WSN environment with holes through minimal sensor function and propose hole bypass routing through boundary line formation.

Holes that generated by the unpredictable and harsh nature application environment or uneven energy consumption are an inevitable phenomenon in wireless sensor networks. Most of the existing schemes for this hole problem tend to use a static detour path to bypass a hole. The static detour path may lead to uneven energy consumption of the nodes on the boundary of the hole, thus it may enlarge the region of holes. At the same time, traffic would concentrate on the nodes on the boundary of the hole and tend to be depleted quickly. To solve this problem, we introduce energy-efficient grid-based geographic routing and hole-detouring scheme by taking advantage of grid anchor point in wireless sensor network with holes. The location of hole detour anchor node is dynamically shifted in grid cell. just generating dynamic hole detour paths to reduce total energy consumption. Simulation results are provided to validate the claims.
A simple procedure to add and remove material simultaneously along the boundary is developed to optimize the shape of a two dimensional elastic problems and to minimize the maximum von Mises stress. The results for the two dimensional infinite plate with a hole, are close to the theoretical results of an elliptical boundary and the stress concentration is reduced by half for the fillet problem. The proposed shape optimization method, when compared with existing derivative based shape optimization methods has many features such as simplicity, applicability, flexibility, computational efficiency and a much better control on stresses on the design boundary.

A two-dimensional boundary element method was used for the scattering analysis of side-drilled hole(SDH). The far-field scattering amplitude was calculated for shear vertical(SV) wave, and their frequency and time-domain results were presented. The time-domain scattering amplitude showed the directly reflected wave from the SDH leading edge as well as the creeping wave. In an immersion, pulse-echo testing, two measurement models were introduced to predict the response from SDHs. The 2-D boundary element scattering amplitude was converted to the 3-D amplitude to be used in the measurement model. The receiver voltage was calculated fer SV wave incidence at 45$^{\circ}C$ on the 1 m diameter SDH, and the result was compared with experiment.
