  • Objectives : The inclusion of Korean Medicine in the national health care system led to the need of a serious discussion on its modernization. This paper looked at how these discussions were progressed. Especially, a difference in the meaning of 'science' in the 1950s and the 1990s was observed. Methods : Articles related to the medical dispute between Korean and Western Medicine in "EE LIM", especially the ones from the 1950s, were selected, classified and analyzed. Research papers on Evidence-Based Medicine were also analyzed. Evidence-Based Medicine was a new medical research methodology in the 1990s. Articles on Evidence-Based Medicine were searched and selected from journal databases: DBpia, KISS, RISS, and OASIS. Results : The problem of establishment of modernity of Korean Medicine in the recent times was addressed in the context of scientification and systematization. Accordingly, the academic societies of Korean Medicine aimed for scientification. But efforts to secure the identity of Korean Medicine opposed to western science were also made. Meanwhile, Evidence-Based Medicine established in 1992 presented a different concept of science. This led to a new means of acknowledgement of Korean Medicine in the modern society. Conclusions : The modernization process of Korean Medicine up to now was a course of scientification. But as this process did not fully reflect its characteristics, the modernization of Korean Medicine still remains a pending question. A modern study methodology that fully reflects the identity of Korean Medicine needs to be established.

  • It is not an easy task for a user to find the correct documents that a user really wanted at once from a vast amount of the search results. For this reason, various methods of recommending documents by taking the user's preferences into consideration based on the user's document browsing history have been proposed. However, the document recommendation methodology based on the document browsing history also has a limitation that only the information the user has viewed is utilized, but the intent of the user searching for the document is not fully utilized. Therefore, we propose a document recommendation method based on the user's search intent that utilizes information on "Why" the user reads the document, instead of the information on "Who" reads the document. In order to confirm the feasibility of the proposed methodology, an experiment was conducted by analyzing 239,438 actual user's search history of one of the most popular e-commerce platform companies in Korea. As a result, our methodology showed superior performance compared to the existing content-based or simple browsing history-based recommendation model.

  • The purpose of this case-control study is to investigate the relationship between storke and stroke risk factors, such as family history and past history. The case-control study over clinical data registered from Daejeon Oriental Medical Hospital in the period of November 2006 to July 2010. Study subjects consisted of 108 patients with acute stroke within 1 month as the case group (Cases) and 108 people who visited hospital for health care as the genreral control group (Controls). The participants had been interviewed by residents to find out their family history and past history. Their blood was taken to check the blood lipid level and liver function. 1. The people whose family history included cerebrovascular accident had more probability of stroke than the people who did not have cerebral vascular accident as their family history. 2. The people who suffered from hypertension had more probability of stroke than the people who did not suffer from hypertension. 3. The people who suffered from diabetes mellitus had more probability of stroke than the people who did not suffer from diabetes mellitus. Based on this study, the people who had cerebral vascular accident as their family history should thoroughly treat their blood pressure and blood sugar level to prevent the cerebral vascular accident.

  • Since the beginning of mankind humans labored to survive, and during this process damages and illnesses developed and jeopardized their lives. Through this, the people came to know that touching seats of disease and wounds reduces or relieves the pain. Based on this, the people started to understand the technical process of stimulating the body with the hands and began to systemize it to use it for medical purposes. Chuna medicine was completed that way and this study is one that organizes information related to its history.

  • Soon after joining the Canadian Confederation in 1867, the province of Quebec adopted the phrase Je me souviens ("As I recall") as its 'national' motto, although many Qu?b?cois do not remember today what they were supposed to memorize, as collective subject, when their government voted this motion. My thesis is that contrary to other countries which have a strong sense of history based on a secular tradition, this process was more complicated in Quebec - as if a collective memory loss lied at the heart of it's history. Through a rereading of Hubert Aquin's cult novel, Trou de m?moire (in its English translation Blackout), first published in 1968, I try to illustrate this paradox and to emphasize the heuristic functions of memory blanks, gaps and lapses in certain postmodern narratives, after the historical breakdown of "the great narratives" (Lyotard). In this perspective, the example of Quebec, through the voice of one of its more gifted yet controversial novelist, can be seen as emblematic of what happens when the mnemonic impossibility of rewriting history opens up new possibilities for writing fiction.

  • The purpose of the study was to determine if there was a difference in the Functional Ambulation Performance score of senior adults with or without a history of falls during walking at a preferred velocity. Twelve subjects with a history of falling (mean age=73.8) and eight subjects with no history of falling (mean age=70.4) participated in the study. Temporal and spatial parameters of gait were analyzed using the computerized GAITRite system. The GAITRite system integrates specific components of locomotion to provide a single, numerical representation of gait, the Functional Ambulation Performance score. The Functional Ambulation Performance score is a Quantitative means of assessing gait based on specific temporal and spatial parameters. Statistical analysis of the two groups demonstrated a significant decrease in Functional Ambulation Performance score for those with a history of falls. They had lower values for step/extremity ratios, mean normalized velocity, and greater values for step times, percent in double support. These results indicate that the GAITRite system can be useful in detecting footfall patterns and selected time and distance measurements of persons with a history of falls and the Functional Ambulation Performance score can be used as indicators of gait performance for senior adults with a history of falls.

  • In this paper, we propose a method of loaming user preference for set-top box scenario. Our proposed method analyzes user history data to learn user preference and then automatically suggest the list of TV programs to the user under the assumption that the TV programs are regularly repeated on time and daily basis. We used MPEG-7 MDS to describe user history data. The experiment results show the proposed method yielded a good performance.
