TAKAHASHI Toru (1878-1967) was one of the most significant Koreanologists in Japanese academic field. He was a professor of Kyeongseong Imperial University in the prewar period and Tenri University (department of Korean studies) in the postwar period. He was majored in Korean intellectual history and literature. His achievements, especially on Korean Confucianism and Buddhism, are still referred and influential. He wrote two pamphlets published by department of education of the Government-General of Korea in 1920. This year was a year after of 3.1 Independent Demonstration. This riot might have demanded Japanese governors to survey about Korean mentality and characteristics. One of outcomes was Chousenjin (Korean People). The pamphlet tried to explain the Korean character in the perspective of a essentialism in Korean race. The other was a simple outline about history of Korean religions entitled Chousen shukyoushi ni arawaretaru sinkou no tokushoku (The characteristics of faith in the history of Korean religions). He explained that Korean religions, especially its Buddhism, were easily influenced by political condition. These pamphlets seemed to be typically colonialistic, since such negative characteristics of Korean made Japanese colonial rule legitimated as the Mission of civilization and enlightenment. His discourses synchronized with the desire of Japanese Imperialism. This article attempted to analyze his discourses in the perspective of postcolonial critics and sociology of knowledge.

This study explores the possibility of finding intersections of commonness and differences between Mahasweta Devi's short stories, "The Hunt" and "Douloti the Bountiful" and Angela Carter's "Flesh and the Mirror" and "Master" in Fireworks. At appearance, Carter as a writer of Great Britains and Devi as a writer of India in postcolonial period do not seem to share any commonness. This study, however, tried to find "common differences," to quote Chandra Mohanty's terminology, as a basis of solidarity possible between these two different feminist writers. Another concept appropriated in this process of comparing Carter and Devi is Gayatri Spivak's 'planetary comparative literature,' which contends the necessity of critical regional studies and the study of Asian Literature in the study of English literature. Devi and Carter, despite their historical, geopolitical and racial differences, share commonness in depicting Asian or colonized women not only as the oppressed others but also as the subjects who show potential for resistance and independence. Carter portrays Japanese women as the colonized and oppressed others of Japanese society, even though Japan did not have any colonial history. Devi finds in the postcolonial Indian women both the oppressed in the interstice of colonial/postcolonial/patriarchal Indian history and the potential for resistance. Despite some limitation in her understanding of Asia, Carter shows her insight to accept Asia as a true origin of her self-knowledge and performativity of her woman's role. Despite their differences, these two writers use Freud's 'unheimlich' from the feminist point of view, in general. Devi's depiction of the heroine's dead body at the end of the story implicates the possibility of resistance through women's 'uncanny' bodies. Carter converts Freudian and negative connotation of woman's body into positive and comfortable 'home' as a starting point of her self knowledge.

Gyeongbokgungdo depicts the composition and layout of Gyeongbokgung Palace before the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, as well as a monument related to pro-jamrye held at the site of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Yeongjo. Based on literature such as Dongguk Yeoji Seungram, such as Gyeongbokgungdo painted major buildings, government offices, and buildings in the backyard. In addition, the literature and the foot of the mountain, waterway, and Pond, which were identified as the site identified during the reconstruction process, are reflected, and some of the Gyeongbokgungdo contain reconstruction records. As such, Gyeongbokgungdo depicts Gyeongbokgung Palace in the early Joseon Dynasty and facilities built after the Imjin War based on the literature, and seems to have been produced around the time of reconstruction as it reflects the mountain and water system. In addition, the layout of the main hall of Gyeongbokgungdo was partially reflected in the reconstructed Gyeongbokgung Palace and used as a material to understand the layout of Gyeongbokgung Palace in the early Joseon Dynasty.

The numerous changes made during the Japanese colonial rule became the basis of the current housing in Korea. Therefore, in order to understand the modern Korean housing, it is essential to understand what the Korean traditional life styles admitted or changed, and how the foreign culture of that time influenced the Korean housing under the Japanese colonial rule. Content analysis through literature review was utilized for the study, and specific sources were research papers, books, magazines, newspapers, and novels. The period during the Japanese invasion was the most active era of modernization in the Korean history. For the housing culture, especially, it can be considered as the most significant period that accepted new housing cultures that replaced the old traditional housing. The Japanese and the Western styles of housing were introduced, new materials and collective production methods were used, and the symbol of the current urban housing in Korea, multi-family dwelling, was constructed. In conclusion, the Koreans did not directly use the Japanese and western housing culture, which were constructed during the Japanese colonial period. They were adapted and altered into Korean style, and eventually, produced various eclectic housing styles.
This research analyzed emergency foods in Korea during the Japanese occupation through the food literature of that era, and attempted to determine the cultural history of food through recorded contents of emergency foods literature. The examination was mainly conducted on the basis of the four excerpts within the emergency foods literature of the Japanese occupation: "Emergency plants of the Joseon", "Wild Fruits and Plants of the Joseon", "Guhwangginam", and "Emergency Plants and How to Eat of the Joseon". After a thorough examination, each of the excerpts had unique data regarding amounts of ingredients, such as Namuls, trees, grain, and beans. "Emergency Plants of the Joseon" listed 142 Namuls, 54 trees,"Wild Fruits and Plants of the Joseon" listed 32 Namuls, 29 trees, "Guhwangginam" 4 grains, 205 Namuls, 84 trees, "Emergency Plants and How to Eat of the Joseon" listed five grain, three beans, 37 Namuls, and eight trees. Emergency foods literature demonstrated the utilization of various wild and edible plants as excellent ingredients for meals. Additionally, changes in traditional cooking methods using sugar, preservation through canning, and frying substantiate the subtle influence of foreign influence on Korean food. Perhaps the carefully structured components of the Korean food can be interpreted as a direct result of a scientific approach. It can be argued that creative application of methods ingredients, approach, of emergency foods is necessary to this modern age.
This paper aims to compare the language of food related to rice and wheat in Korean, Chinese and Japanese. These three countries in East Asia are very close in terms of geography, history, and culture. As of language, Korean and Japanese are classified as a same language family, while Chinese, to another. However, since three countries have been sharing Chinese character and words composed of it, there are many alike things in their languages. It is natural that food and the language of food are shared in neighboring areas. Among many food, I will explain the names of rice and wheat and the details of the names of various food made of them. In particular, rather than a simple comparison, the language of food is analyzed in the viewpoint of migration. And I will look into the names of food not only in relation to language, but also in culture, society and history.
This study is to discuss the content of Posangkimun on the whole and to report the understanding of Seokgok Lee Gyujoon on western civilization. Through the overall analysis of Posangkimun, it is found the following facts: 1. Posangkimun aroused interest of academic circles as it covered theories of western civilization. Most of the introduction to western civilization contained in the book is related to astronomy and geography. Seokgok criticized all the western theories on revolution of the earth, astronomy, continents and oceans on the ground that these theories were not congruous with the teaching of the Oriental sages. 2. Seokgok found the reasons why the West had led the East from 'nationalism' of the West. The nationalism mentioned here were more similar to 'democracy' in modern sense, or rather 'democratism'. What is specially noteworthy is that he did not find the reasons of western advancement from the spiritual issues not from the machine civilization. In this way, Seokgok could avoid the fallacy of throwing away traditional ideas to concentrate in western machine civilization. 3. The content of Posangkimun shows that Seokgok was a person with a very conservative view. Notwithstanding his inclination, he had good knowledge about western theories, most of which were gathered from newspapers and magazines at that time. It means that newspapers and magazines should be treated with more importance when studying Korean intellectuals in late Joseon period or during the time of Japanese forced occupation.
