This study considers the historical eruption record in 1702 from the volcanological point of view, which is presumed to have occurred from Mt. Baegdusan volcano. The minium volume of erupted materials is estimated to be $1.2km^3$ when calculated with an empirical formula using an isopach line obtained from two points 140 km away from the vent. The 1702 eruption was a paroxysmal one with VEI of 5. The historical record described a deposition of wind-modified fallout ash by movement of hot ash cloud. To prepare for the future eruption, we have to analyze historical literatures and understand characteristics of volcano.
This study is performed to find out the eruptive events of the historical period recorded in literature, which have been recognized and regarded as ones from Mt. Baekdusan, and to make volcanological interpretations of the eruptive events. Since the Millennium eruption, more than 31 eruptive events have been discovered, most of which are Plinian eruptions with volcanic ash that dispersed into the regions in the vicinity of the volcano. The 1903 record includes the event of the phreatomagmatic or vulcanian eruption that occurred within the Cheonji caldera lake. Based on the eruption records of the historical period and the 2002 precursor unrest to volcanic eruptions, Mt. Baekdusan has been evaluated and regarded as an active volcano that has the potential to erupt in the future.
The Pliny Letter, the first historical record of volcanic eruptions and disasters on Earth, was studied to better understand the Vesuvius' eruption patterns in 79 AD. The two-day eruption, which began at 1 a.m. on August 24th 79 AD, produced large amounts of volcanic ash and pumice, which were carried by the wind and fell on nearby cities. Furthermore, during the eruption, fast-moving pyroclastic flows flowed down the volcano's sides, and several phenomena such as earthquakes and tsunamis occurred. Cities near Mount Vesuvius were buried and destroyed by volcanic ash and pyroclastic flows. Previous studies were collected, analyzed, and investigated and the scope of damage was chosen from Pompeii, Herculaneum, Stabiae, and Oplontis. The sedimentary stratigraphy and thickness vary according to location and distance from Vesuvius in each region. Within the depositional layers, the remains of residents who died during the eruption were also discovered, and 1,150 remains have been discovered in Pompeii, 306 in Herculaneum, 111 in Stabiae, and 54 in Oplontis, but the exact number of people who killed is unknown. The eruption that exhibited the pattern seen in AD 79 was named the Plinian eruption after Pliny and classified as a new type of eruption as a result of Pliny's detailed description of the eruption.
Anatahan Volcano in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) erupted for the first time in recorded history on 10 May 2003. The underwater acoustic records of earthquakes, explosions, and tremor produced during the eruption were recorded on a sound-channel hydrophone deployed in February 2003. Acoustic propagation models show the seismic to acoustic conversion at Anatahan is particularly efficient, aided by the slope of the seamount toward the hydrophone. The hydrophone records confirm the onset of earthquake activity at 01:53Z on 10 May, as well as the onset (at ${\~}$06:20Z) of continuous, low-frequency (5-40 Hz) acoustic energy that is likely volcanic tremor related to magma intrusion. The hydrophone recorded a total of 458 earthquakes associated with the eruption. To predict the character of acoustic signals generated from Anatahan, we developed a moment-tensor representation of a volcano-seismic source that is governed by the geometry of the source and the physical properties of the magma. A buried magmatic pipe model was adopted, and numerically modeling source parameters such as the pipe radius and magma viscosity enable us to grasp the inward nature of Anatahan Volcano.
Many eruptions of Mt. Baekdusan volcano have been recorded in the historical literatures, and there were unrest precursors in 2002. Based on the geological survey results, it has been recognized that Mt. Baekdusan's Plinian eruptions had caused ashfall, followed by the occurrence of pyroclastic flows, which were caused by the collapse of eruption column. Therefore, we simulated the range of the impacts of pyroclastic flows, which were caused by small eruptions from a specific crater. Based on the simulation results, it can be interpreted that, when the pyroclastic flows are caused by the eruption column collapse from an eruption with less than VEI 3, the impacts will range from the outer rim of the caldera to the mountain slope 7 km at the maximum distance. Furthermore, it is interpreted that, when the eruption column occurs by the crater located inside the caldera, most will be deposited inside the caldera and what overflows will be deposited thickly mostly in the north valley, the upper stream region of Erdaobaihe.
The historical turbulence between China and Japan started from the First Sino-Japanese War in 1895, and culminated in Japan's invasion of China during World War Two (the Second Sino-Japanese War) between 1937 and 1945. A series of wars caused huge human and material losses in both countries, and both experienced comprehensive transformations during and after the wars. The impact of this historical turbulence is so long-lasting that it still influences both countries' social psyche. Moreover, it continues casting a long shadow upon the current Sino-Japanese relations. The recent turbulence in Sino-Japanese relations partly stems from the historical turbulence. It is much less violent but can also be emotional and worrisome. It started from the early 1980s (the Japanese history textbook controversy in 1982 and the 1985 anti-Japanese student protests in China), and culminated in the anti-Japanese mass demonstrations in multiple Chinese cities in 2005 (Bush 2010; Gries 2005; Reilly 2012; Stockmann 2010; Weiss 2008). In addition to dramatic demonstrations on streets, there are also other forms of movements, such as war reparations movements, in which Chinese war victims demand reparations from the Japanese state and companies (Rose 2005; Xu and Fine 2010; Xu and Pu 2010). Although the tension has existed for many years and surfaced from time to time, the eruption of the nationwide anti-Japanese movements in China in 2005 still shocked many outside observers. Many scholars have tried to explain the anti-Japanese sentiment within current Chinese society that underlies and drives these social movements. Through careful reexamination of the existing literature, this article proposes an explanation for the anti-Japanese sentiment from a perspective that stresses the shifting state-society interaction in China's Japan policy. Specifically, the totalitarian Chinese state's neglect and suppression of genuine social concerns regarding Japan in earlier years, followed by a relatively liberalized state that tolerates societal participation in Sino-Japanese relations, are an importance source of the anti-Japanese sentiment recently observed in China.

Caldera is a large depression commonly formed by collapse of the ground following explosive eruption of a large body of stored magma. On earth, calderas and caldera complexes range in size from kilometers to tens of kilometers. Historical eruptions associated with caldera collapse have led to huge fatalities in Indonesia as well as left global impacts. This study presents case study on calderas in Indonesia which resembles to Mount Baekdu located at the border of China and North Korea; in the perspectives of similar characteristics, principal hazard, recent symptom of volcanic activity and the threat if eruption occurs in the near future. Calculation by using weighted evaluation matrix for Mount Krakatau, Mount Tambora, Mount Ijen, Tengger Caldera, Mount Rinjani and Ranau Caldera were taken for the selection of a site for future case study.
The historical accounts and materials about the eruption of Mt. Baekdusan as observed by the geological survey is now showing some signs of waking from a long slumber. As a response of the volcanic eruption of Mt. Baekdusan, water release may occur from the stored water in Lake Cheonjii caldera. The volcanic flood is crucial in that it has huge potential energy that can destruct all kinds of man-made structures and that its velocity can reach up to 100 km $hr^{-1}$ to cover hundreds of kilometers of downstream of Lake Cheonji. The ultimate goal of the study is to estimate the level of damage caused by the volcanic flood of Lake Cheon-Ji caldera. As a preliminary study a scenario-based numerical analysis is performed to build hydrographs as a function of time. The analysis is performed for each scenario (breach, magma uplift, combination of uplift and breach, formation of precipitation etc.) and the parameters to require a model structure is chosen on the basis of the historic records of other volcanos. This study only considers the amount of water at the rim site as a function of time for the estimation whereas the downstream routing process is not considered in this study.

Products of the eruption of Mt. Baekdusan are identified as volcanic materials at the estuaries of the Songhuagang river to north, the Dumangang river to east and the Amnokgang river to west. More speficially, pyroclastic flows, lahars and volcanic floods can affect an area of 400km in radius, centering around Lake Cheonji caldera. However, unlike the millenium eruption, the flow situation has been changed. Because multi-purpose dams and reserviors with a combined pondage of mora than 2 billion tons of water have been built in the rivers of which sources are originated from Lake Cheonji caldera. In addition, the flow of fluids expected to take place when the volcano has erupted is thought to be affected by artificial constructions in both direct and indirect ways. This study calculates the direction of fluids flow by using numerical analyses of pyroclastic flows, lahars and volcanic floods that can occur when the volcano of Mt. Baekdusan has erupted. We also estimate the scope of damages by pyroclastic flows, lahars, volcanic flooding caused by the pondage of the dams and water storages in and around Mt. Baekdusan. Pyroclastic flows transported over the steep slopes at the early times of eruptions move over the mountain slopes, affecting airplanes, and lahars due to leaks of Lake Cheonji could reach as far as major rivers and streams near Mt. Baekdusan. Unlike historical accounts, volcanic flood is expected to be limited in its scope of influence to reservoirs bigger than Lake Cheonji in pondage.
Given the distance from Mt. Baekdu, volcanic ash will have the direct impact on South Korea in case Mt. Baekdu erupts. Ash fall deposits or particulate matters(PM10) in the air will cause damages in various sectors. In particular, the PM10 impact on the manufacturing sector when the ash disperses in Korea is needed to be assessed since South Korea's manufacturing sector accounts for more than 30% of GDP. Meanwhile the economic impacts of PM10, including Asian dust, have been researched in Korea as the events become frequent, and losses in the manufacturing have been also reported. This study is to identify vulnerable sectors to volcanic ash in the korean industry, and to assess economic losses in case of a Mt. Baekdu eruption scenario, based on the historical loss experience with particulate matters. Study results show that airline, precision such as electronics and semiconductors, distribution, shipbuilding, car, leisure, glass, dairy farming are vulnerable to volcanic ash, or PM10. The economic losses in both car and shipbuilding industry is estimated to 46.49 billion Korean won due to shutdown for 6 hours in case of a Mt. Baekdu eruption scenario.
