  • Current perception of games is divided. On the one hand, they are criticized as harmful entertainment due to their violent content and addictive nature, and on the other hand, they are evaluated positively as products of a creative industry that offers alternative, interactive entertainment. Based on the latter, this paper will reevaluate the positive element of such games in relation to the museum, the canon of historical and cultural evaluation. The analysis on game culture introduction to the museums consists of three categories: the practical application that includes educational, communicational, and promotional purposes; the approval of games as industrial assets and their extensive cultural influence; and the indirect acceptance of art works using games. A panoramic view of game culture development would promote research on the link between game culture and museums; furthermore, it would establish a basis for an introduction of game culture in academia and predict the future of the industry.

  • This paper considers the research content and its historical significance of the Study of Nature conducted by John Ruskin(1819-1900) who had a profound influence on art, architecture, social reformation, and preservation of natural environment in Great Britain. Because Ruskin's Study of Nature would be the key to understand totally the implicative meaning of his various academic trials for integrating a wider contexts among human, culture, and society, without being bound by the rules of conventional disciplines. For Ruskin, 'Nature' is defined as 'a system' governing every aspects of human and non-human beings, formulating certain laws of composition. This system has an ecological quality to form a state of harmony by internal interaction and process. Such organic quality of nature worked as 'a metaphor' in Ruskin's research practices. Therefore, Ruskin's Study of Nature would be the conceptual basis for organizing and connecting its various elements of Ruskin's spiritual world.

  • Old maps of Dokdo are records with the physical specificities of a map while also holding historical meanings and evidencial values as ancient writings. Therefore more detail and meaningful descriptions are needed than other general records. However, in comparison to the high interest in these maps, there is a lack of systematic and integrative descriptions. Hence, this study aimed to propose the description elements of the old maps of Dokdo holding evidential values. For this purpose, first, literature reviews and the characteristics of the old maps of Dokdo were analyzed. Next, for determining description elements using institutions that possess old maps of Dokdo, case studies were conducted in 12 domestic and foreign institutions and compared the rules of ISAD(G). The final description elements were suggested by reflecting on the evaluation of five experts in old maps. Fifty description elements in a total of 8 areas - identity areas, context areas, content and structure areas, conditions of access and use areas, allied materials areas, note areas, description control areas, and other areas were proposed.

  • Bonchoyuham Nyoryeong(本草類函要領) shows how Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑) -Mirror of Eastern Medicine- is understood, digested into Korean medicine, and at the same time how it participated in the historical shaping of Korean medicine since the publishing in the early 17th century. The author, Hyeon Jae-deok, internalized the structure, content, and significance of Donguibogam and drew out a novel, concise, but comprehensive type of medical manual, while many other medical books since the 17century in Korea are estimated to have been an abridged edition of the Donguibogam. It may well be estimated as exemplar of the extent to which Donguibogam informed Korean medicine since the 17 century. The book shows as well how Bencao Gangmu(本草綱目) -Compendium of Materia Medica- and Donguibogam are merged and set a new medical stream in the 19th century Korea. Hyeon Jae-deok looked at the Bencao Gangmu from the lens of clinical treatment and prescription such that he focused on sections, elements, or parts of procedures, treatments, and prescriptions, not on the herbal taxonomic knowledge of the book. This perspective was embodied in Bonchoyuham(本草類函), which cited simple remedies, prescriptions, or treatments from Bencao Gangmu.
