  • Background: Lung cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers and the most frequent cause of cancer-related death worldwide. In Iran, it ranks second and third as the cancer-causing death in men and women, respectively. We carried out this study to find out the demographic, clinical, and histological characteristics and risk factors of lung cancer in a referral tertiary center in Iran. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on cases of primary lung cancer based on the results of registered cancer reports of cytological and pathological specimens between March 2001 and March 2012. Demographic variables, clinical manifestations, histology and location of tumors were determined based on the data found in the medical records of each patient. Definite or probable etiologic factors were identified. Data analysis was performed with SPSS version 16 and a p-value ${\leq}0.05$ was considered as significant. Results: A total of 203 patients, with a mean age of 65.7 years (SD=11.2), with primary lung cancer were identified, 81.3% being men. Of the total, 110 cases (54.2%) were living in urban areas. In 53.2% of cases, the site of tumor was on the right side and in 72.9% of cases the lesion was centrally located. The histological types of lung cancer were squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in 107 cases (52.7%), adenocarcinoma (AC) in 30 cases (14.8%), and small cell carcinoma (SC) in 27 cases (13.3%). Significant correlations between the gender and residence, smoking, and the histological type and location (central or peripheral) of tumor were found. The percentage of smokers was 75.2% in men and 15.8% in women. Conclusions: Smoking was the most important risk factor and squamous cell carcinoma the most common histological type of lung cancer in our study. Male sex and being a smoker was associated with histological types of SCC while being nonsmoker had relationship with adenocarcinoma.

  • Phytoalexin scoparone (6,7-dimethoxycoumarin) was induced in flavedo tissue of lemon fruit inoculated with Penicillium digitatum during heat treatment for 3 days at $36^{\circ}$. The compound was also induced in the flavedo tissue after UV illuminatiion. Induction of scoparone was deteected in the flavedo tissue by histological analysis. This fluorescent scoparone accumulated only on the 4-5 layers of cells adjacent to the inoculation site. Preinoculation with P. digitatum and subsequent heat-treatment induced resistance in the lemon fruit tissues after challenge-inoculation at the site of the first infection. the data obtained in the study suggest that lemon fruit acquired resistance against P. digitatum parallel with the scoparone production at the infection site.

  • Objectives : In order to investigate the toxicity of rats after oral administration of Eumcheonyijin-tang extract. Methods : The experimental animals were subdivided into control, short term administration group, and long term administration group. With changes of gross appearance, the histological changes of liver and kidney were observed. Blood chemical indexes used in this study were AST, ALT, total bilirubin, albumin, BUN and creatinine in serum. Results : In the long term administration group, histological changes were detected in the liver as centrolobular disposition of fatty tissue(adipose cell), and in serum test, AST, ALT increased at 21 days after administration group, serum total bilirubin were increased 21, 28 and 35 days after administration group. So it seems to induce toxicity. Kidneys of the long term administration group revealed histological changes : increasing of connective tissue and pyknosis of glomerulus cell were observed at 28 days after administration group, and in serum test, significant changes of albumin, BUN, and creatinine were admitted. So it seems to induce toxicity. Conclusions : In long term administration of Eumcheonyijin-tang toxicity was induced.

  • The ancient biomolecular remains are the potential source for paleobiology and paleoanthropology. Especially, ancient human specimens such as bone, teeth, and hair are powerful materials to identify historical origin and migration of ancestor population from the past. However, most excavated human specimens in archaeological sites have commonly problems as natural damage and exogenous contamination. We carried out histological and molecular analyses of excavated bone from the historic sites in South Korea from the recently discovered in tumulus of Seochun and Naju. Biological deterioration of bone was observed anatomically by optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). We extracted degraded DNA, and amplified hyper variable region (HVR) of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and amelogenin of nucleus DNA. This study applied and examined the relationships between histological preservation and DNA survival in excavated bone.

  • Many different appliances have been used to move teeth or to attempt to inhibit or stimulate growth of the jaws. Especially, Orthopedic force was used to apply a constant force on the mandible. Various orthopedic forces bring the changes of surrounding tissue, growth and development on the mandibular joint. Author carried out this study to find the histological changes of the mandibular joint in rats when the mandible applied posterior displacement. For the purpose of this study, $009\times036inch$ closed coil spring and 030inch orthopedic wire were used between the post occipital region and the chin region in order to render the orthopedic forces, posteriorly. The experimental animals vu. used 1 month old (GroupI), 3 months old (Group II), and 12 months old (Group III) rats. Following results were obtained; 1. At the beginning of the experimental Group I, there were predominant increment of Cartilage layer in the posterior parts of condylar head. Especially, the mature chondrocyte zone was increased. 2. In the experimental Group II, the chondroblastic zone was decreased while it showed slightly increased mature cartilage zone. 3. In the experimental Group III, the mature chondrocyte zone was disappeared gradually and there was a tendency to reduce the endochondral bone formation in condylar head. 4. After 30 days of experimental Group I and in experimental Group II, there was a tendency to decrease the immature cellular zone in the glenoid fossa by pressure. 5. There were no histological changes in the articular disc by pressure.

  • Background: The effort to detect lung cancer in ever-earlier stages leads to the identification of an increasing number of patients without preoperative histological diagnosis. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence and characteristics of benign lesions excised in the context of lung cancer surgery. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data from 125 surgical procedures. We compared the preoperative clinical or cyto-histological diagnosis with the surgical-pathologic diagnosis in order to identify the percentage of benign lesions excised. Furthermore, other parameters were analyzed, such as age, sex, tumor size, the presence of calcification, and the type of surgery according to subgroup. Results: Of the 125 patients included in the study, 63 (50.4%) had a preoperative histological diagnosis of malignancy, corresponding to 56 cases (44.8%) of primary lung cancer and 7 cases (5.6%) of metastases. The 62 (49.6%) remaining cases without preoperative histological diagnosis were divided among 50 (40%) solitary pulmonary nodules and 12 (9.6%) pulmonary masses. According to the postoperative pathologic examination, we identified 12 (9.6%) benign lesions excised during lung cancer surgery. There were no statistically significant differences by subgroups with respect to age or sex. We found statistically significant evidence regarding the size and wedge resection as the surgical technique of choice for this type of benign lesion. Conclusion: Our study obtained results similar to those published by other groups regarding the resection of benign lesions in lung cancer surgery. This percentage could be a quality management index of indeterminate lung lesions.
