Phthalates and those metabolites have long history in industry and suspected to have deficient effects in development and reproduction. These are well-known anti-androgenic chemicals and many studies have examined the effects of these compounds on male reproduction as toxins and endocrine disruptors. Uterus is a key organ for proper embryo development, successful reproduction, and health of eutherian mammals including women. To understand the effects of the phthalate, the horizontal approach with a whole group of phthalate is best but the known phthalates are huge and all is not uncovered. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most common product of plasticizers in polymer products and studied many groups. Although, there is limited studies on the effects of phthalates on the female, a few studies have proved the endocrine disrupting characters of DEHP or phthalate mixture in female. An acute and high dose of DEHP has adverse effects on uterine histological characters. Recently, it has been revealed that a chronical low-dose exposing of DEHP works as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC). DEHP can induce various cellular responses including the expression regulation of steroid hormone receptors, transcription factors, and paracrine factors. Interestingly, the response of uterus to DEHP is not monotonous and the exposed female has various phenotypes in fertility. These suggest that the exposing of DEHP may causes of histological modification in uterus and of disease in female such as endometriosis, hyperplasia, and myoma in addition to developmental and reproductive toxicity.

Purpose: This study aimed to characterize the early stages of periodontal disease and determine the optimal period for its evaluation in a mouse model. The association between the duration of ligation and its effect on the dentogingival area in mice was evaluated using micro-computed tomography (CT) and histological analysis. Methods: Ninety mice were allocated to an untreated control group or a ligation group in which periodontitis was induced by a 6-0 silk ligation around the left second maxillary molar. Mice were sacrificed at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, and 14 days after ligature placement. Alveolar bone destruction was evaluated using micro-CT. Histological analysis was performed to assess the immune-inflammatory processes in the periodontal tissue. Results: No significant difference in alveolar bone loss was found compared to the control group until day 3 after ligature placement, and a gradual increase in alveolar bone loss was observed from 4 to 8 days following ligature placement. No significant between-group differences were observed after 8 days. The histological analysis demonstrated that the inflammatory response was evident from day 4. Conclusions: Our findings in a mouse model provide experimental evidence that ligature-induced periodontitis models offer a consistent progression of disease with marginal attachment down-growth, inflammatory infiltration, and alveolar bone loss.
An experiment was carried out to measure the cellular immune response in the animals by sensitizing the animals with 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzene(DNCB). The fowls could be sensitized with primary application of DNCB. The sensitizing and challenge dose was standardized. Heterophils were prominent in the early inflammatory response in the superficial and deep dermal regions with scattering of eosinophils. The histological response in the fowls was characteristic of a delayed hypersensitivity reaction.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary seleno-yeast on histological response in juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. Fish averaging $4.0{\pm}0.1g$ (mean ${\pm}$ SD) were fed one of the four semi-purified diets containing 0.56, 1.07, 2.86 and 4.56 mg Selenoyeast/kg diet ($Se_{0.56}$, $Se_{1.07}$, $Se_{2.86}$ and $Se_{4.56}$, respectively) in triplicates for 12 weeks. Swelling of blood cell in glomerulus, the rupture of some epithelial cell in the renal tubules and enlarged macrophage were observed in the $Se_{1.07}$ group. The hepatopancreas had hepatic cell, capillary and zymogen in the pancreas and was normal in the $Se_{0.56}$ group. Swelling of hepatocyte gradually decreased with increase in selenoyeast supplementation. The gill lamellae showed partial abnormal condition (terminal clubbing) in the $Se_{0.56}$ group, but there were little differences between these and other treatments. These results indicated that the optimum dietary supplementation level of selenoyeast in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, could be less than 1.07 mg selenoyeast/kg diet based on histological responses of the fish.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the pulpal response to direct pulp capping with dentin sialoprotein (DSP) -derived synthetic peptide in teeth of dogs, and to compare its efficacy to capping substances $Ca(OH)_2$ and white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). A total of 72 teeth of 6 healthy male beagle dogs were used. The mechanically exposed pulps were capped with one of the following: (1) DSP-derived synthetic peptide (PEP group): (2) $Ca(OH)_2$ (CH group): (3) a mixture paste of peptide and $Ca(OH)_2$ (PEP+CH group): or (4) white MTA (WMTA group). The access cavity was restored with a reinforced glass ionomer cement. Two dogs were sacrificed at each pre-determined intervals (2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months). After the specimens were prepared for standard histological processing, sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Under a light microscope, inflammatory response and hard tissue formation were evaluated in a blind manner by 2 observers. In the PEP group, only 3 of 17 specimens showed hard tissue formation, indication that the DSP-derived synthetic peptide did not induce proper healing of the pulp. Compared with the CH group, the PEP group demonstrated an increased inflammatory response and poor hard tissue formation. The CH and WMTA groups showed similar results for direct pulp capping in mechanically exposed teeth of dogs.
This experimental study was made to investigate the effect of the "Hi-Pol" composite resin on the human dental pulp. 38 cavities of healthy permanent teeth were divided into 5 groups which were used as experimental materials. Group 1: Zinc Oxide-Euginol paste was applied to the cavities as controls $\cdots\;\cdots8$ cases Group 2: "Hi-Pol"*filling with Dycal** base $\cdots\;\cdots9$ cases Group 3: "Hi-Pol" filling without Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots9$ cases Groud 4: Adaptic*** filling with Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots6$ cases Group 5: Adaptic filling without Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots6$ cases The treated teeth were extracted after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks and processed for histological study. The results obtained from this experimental study were as follows; 1. The controls applied zinc oxide-eugenol showed the minimal pulp response and group 3 and group 5 showed the most severe pulp response. 2. In group 3 and group 5, the severity of pulp response increased in intensity according to the time elapsed. 3. In group 2 and group 4, the mild pulp response was found in earlier stage and the repairing process could be observed in later stage. * Boo-Pyung Co., Korea ** L. D. Purpose: The quality of implant surface is one of the factors that influence wound healing of implant site and subsequently affect osseointegration. The objective of modification of the surface properties of an implant is to affect the biological consequence. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the biologic response of osseous tissue to anodized implants. Materials and Methods: Two machined titanium implants for control group were installed in a tibia of each rabbit and two anodized implants for test group were installed in the other tibia of each rabbit. At the moment the implants were installed, resonance frequency analysis (RFA) values were measured. After healing periods of 1, 2, 3, and 7 weeks, the implants were uncovered and RFA values were measured again. Removal torque was measured for one implant in the test group and one implant in the control group. Histological evaluation was executed in the other implants. Results: Both of test group and control group have the tendency of greater RFA change rate and removal torque value as healing periods became longer, but were statistically insignificant (P>0.05). However, in the case of the same healing period, the test group tended to have greater RFA change rate and removal torque than the control group (P<0.05). More active new bone formation from endosteal surface was noted on the anodized surface than machined surface in specimen after 1 week. There were no significant differences between the test group and control group in histological evaluations. Conclusion: In summary, the anodized surface showed slightly favorable results and it is postulated that it may facilitate improved stability in bone.

Objectives : Allergy is an immune dysfunction caused by degranulation from mast cells in the early phase of allergic disease including allergic rhinitis (AR). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Osterici Radix, roots of Ostericum koreanum Maximowicz in human mast cells and experimental allergic animal models. Methods : The anti-allergic effect of Osterici Radix water extract (NK-W) was investigated in human mast cell line, HMC-1 cells, and compound 48/80-induced systemic anaphylactic response in rats and ovalbumin (OVA)-induced AR in mice. Animals were orally administrated with NK-W (10 and 50 mg/kg) or anti-histamine drug, dosodium cromoglycate (50 mg/kg), and then intraperitoneally injected with compound 48/80 (8 mg/kg) or sensitized with 0.1% OVA into nasal. Animals were observed plasma histamine and histological changes of nasal mucosa. Also, mast cell degranulation and histamine production were determined in compound 48/80-stimulated HMC-1 cells. Results : NK-W inhibited compound 48/80-induced degranulation of mast cells and histamine releasing in HMC-1 cells. NK-W decreased mortality and serum histamine releasing in compound 48/80-induced anaphylatic rats in a dose-dependently manner. NK-W also inhibited serum histamine levels in OVA-induced AR mice and improved abnormal histological changes such as expansion of grandular cells and hypertrophy of epithelium in the nasal mucosa. These results indicate that Osterici Radix water extract suppress allergic response through downregulation of mast cell activation. Conclusions : This study suggests that a therapeutic potential of Osterici Radix as a source of anti-allergic agents for use in a number of allergic diseases.
Background: Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a common cancer with poor prognosis. It has been hypothesized that Oct4 positive radioresistant stem cells may be responsible for tumor recurrence. Hence, we evaluated Oct4 expression in ESCC in pre-treatment, post neo-adjuvant residual and post-surgical recurrent tumours. Materials and Methods: Endoscopic mucosal biopsies were used to study Oct4 expression and the observations were correlated with histological tumor grades, patient data and clinical background. Results: All patients presented with dysphagia with male predominance and a wide age range. Majority of the patients had intake of mixed diet, history of alcohol and tobacco intake was documented in less than half of the patients. Oct 4 expression was significantly higher in poorly differentiated (PDSCC) and basaloid (BSCC) subtypes than the other better differentiated tumor morphology. Oct4 was also expressed by adjoining esophageal mucosa showing low grade dysplasia and basal cell hyperplasia (BCH). Biopsies in PDSCC and BSCC groups were more likely to show a positive band for Oct4 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Dysplasia and BCH mucosa also showed Oct4 positivity by PCR. All mucosal biopsies with normal morphology were negative for Oct4. Number of tissue samples showing Oct4 positivity by PCR was higher than that by the conventional immunohistochemistry (p>0.05). Oct4 expression pattern correlated only with tumor grading, not with other parameters including the clinical background or patient data. Conclusions: Our observations highlighted a possible role of Oct4 in identifying putative cancer stem cells in ESCC pathobiology and response to treatment. The implications are either in vivo existence of Oct4 positive putative cancer stem cells in ESCC or acquisition of cancer stem cell properties by tumor cells as a response to treatment given, resulting ultimately an uncontrolled cell proliferation and treatment failure.
