  • This study aims at examining the correlations between waist-hip ratio, body fat, BMI, relative body weight and serum lipids by men and women in 40's and 50's. The subjects were 412 adults, who had regular health examinations between January and December of 1996 at S-Hospital in Seoul. The data were analyzed using unpaired t -test and Pearson correlation coefficient. The results were as follows : 1. The group of men had higher levels in waist-hip ratio, BMI, body weight , triglyceride, total cholesterol /HDL-cholesterol ratio , LDL-cholesterol /HDL-cholesterol ratio than the group of women. The group of women had higher levels in body fat and HDL-cholesterol than the group of men. 2. In the group of men, waist-hip ratio was more significantly correlated to serum lipids than body fat and BMI. In the group of women, body fat, BMI and relative body weight was more significantly correlated to serum lipids than waist-hip ratio.

  • We developed the high power telephone for hearing impaired person (HIP) who can't communicate with others by general telephone. The general telephone can't delivered enough sound for HIP to understand telephone speech. In this study, we developed the method of telephone speech amplification proper to HIP and effective howling suppression which occurred as a side effect of amplification. In our new telephone, speech sound is divieded to 3 band pass filter path, amplified respectively fit to HIP's hearing ability, and monitored howling in time domain. The result of test of our telephone showed that we can amplify the sound as much as 40dB, which is very useful to HIP, and make HIP increase the perception of telephone speech.

  • Traumatic fracture-dislocations of the hip frequently result from high-energy injury, and hip dislocations are commonly associated with severe concomitant injuries. Sciatic nerve injury often accompanies traumatic fracture-dislocation of the hip, but neurologic examination at the time of injury is difficult in severely traumatized patients with decreased consciousness. We present such a case of multiple traumas with traumatic hip dislocation and sciatic nerve injury after reduction, and we found that magnetic resonance image (MRI) played an important role in developing a management plan.

  • Lifting chair is a typical assistive product to aid for standing up and sitting down for persons with disability. It is particularly useful for the elderly persons whose muscular system is weakened by degenerative joint disease. This paper describes biomechanical assessments of lifting chair with hip-up function. In experiments we measured 3D motion and electromyographic(EMG) signal on the femoral muscle when subject performs the standing motion on the predetermined seat height. Based on assessment of the standing motion, we select the hip-up angle as 15 degrees to cover the relative femoral angle when EMG peak value is appeared. Using an implemented prototype lifting chair with hip-up function we perform standing experiments with five subjects. The experimental results show that the lifting and hip-up functions are effective to assist for standing up motion with less muscle force.

  • The purpose of the study was to investigate the kinematics between the double collar-tie and double underhook Thai Boxing clinching positions. Ten amateur mixed martial arts athletes executed six knee strikes for both clinching positions with their dominant limb directed towards a target. A standard two-dimensional video motion analysis was conducted, and the results showed a statistical significant difference at the hip joint angle and the angular acceleration of the knee and ankle. Within both clinching positions, there was a statistically significant correlation between the hip and knee joint angles, hip and knee angular velocities, and hip angular acceleration. Between both clinching positions, there was a statistically significant correlation at the knee joint angle, knee angular velocity, and hip angular acceleration. This study demonstrates the importance of the hip and knee joint movements in both clinching positions, which implies the applications of strength training and flexibility at these joints for sports performance and injury prevention. It is suggested that future studies analyzing the non-dominant leg are warranted to fully understand the Thai Boxing clinch.

  • Pseudotumors are not uncommon complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and may occur due to differences in bearing surfaces of the head and the liner ranging from soft to hard articulation. The most common causes of pseudotumors are foreign-body reaction, hypersensitivity and wear debris. The spectrum of pseudotumor presentation following THA varies greatly-from completely asymptomatic to clear implant failure. We report a case of pseudo-tumor formation with acetabular cup aseptic loosening after revision ceramic-on-metal hip arthroplasty. The patient described herein underwent pseudotumor excision and re-revision complex arthroplasty using a trabecular metal shell and buttress with ceramic-on-polyethylene THA. Surgeons should be aware of the possibility of a pseudotumor when dealing with revisions to help prevent rapid progression of cup loosening and implant failure, and should intervene early to avoid complex arthroplasty procedures.

  • Urgent reduction is required in cases of traumatic hip dislocation to reduce the risk of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. However, in cases of femoral head fractures, the dislocated hip cannot be reduced easily, and in some cases, it can even be irreducible. This irreducibility may provoke further incidental iatrogenic fractures of the femoral neck. In an irreducible hip dislocation, without further attempting for closed reduction, an immediate open reduction is recommended. This can prevent iatrogenic femoral neck fracture or avascular necrosis of the femoral head, and save the natural hip joint.

  • The purpose of this clinical case is to evaluate the efficacy of the Korean medical treatment on a ligamentum teres tear of the hip. One patient, admitted to Daejeon Jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine was diagnosed with a ligamentum teres tear of the hip by hip magnetic resonance imaging. We treated the patient using the Korean medical treatments, including acupunture, pharmacopuncture, herbal medication, and cupping. We measured the numerical rating scale (NRS), passive range of motion (PROM) and the changes of symptoms. After 13 days, NRS decreased from 8 to 1 respectively, PROM of hip joint has recovered, and the symptoms of the patient improved. In conclusion, this study shows that Korean medical treatment might be effective in treating the patient with a ligamentum teres tear of the hip.

  • Knowledge of the relationship between the hip and spine is essential in the effort to minimize instability and improve outcomes following total hip arthroplasty (THA). A detailed yet straightforward preoperative imaging workup can provide valuable information on pelvic positioning, which may be helpful for optimum placement of the acetabular cup. For a streamlined preoperative assessment of THA candidates, classification systems with a capacity for providing a more personalized approach to performance of THA have been introduced. Familiarity with these systems and their clinical application is important in the effort to optimize component placement and reduce the risk of instability. Looking ahead, the principles of the hip-spine relationship are being integrated using emerging innovative technologies, promising further streamlining of the evaluation process.
