  • Structural vibration is a significant problem in many multi-part or multi-component assemblies. In aircraft industry, structures are composed of various fasteners, such as bolts, snap, hinge, weld or other fastener or connector (collectively "fasteners"). Due to these, prediction and design involving dynamic characteristics is quite complicated. However, the current state of the art does not provide an analytical tool to effectively predict structure's dynamic characteristics, because consideration of structural uncertainties (i.e. material properties, geometric tolerance, dimensional tolerance, environment and so on) is difficult and very small fasteners in the structure cause a huge amount of analysis time to predict dynamic characteristics using the FEM (finite element method). In this study, to resolve the current state of the art, a new approach is proposed using the FEM and probabilistic analysis. Firstly, equivalent elements are developed using simple element (e.g. bar, beam, mass) to replace fasteners' finite element model. Developed equivalent elements enable to explain static behavior and dynamic behavior of the structure. Secondly, probabilistic analysis is applied to evaluate the PDF (probability density function) of dynamic characteristics due to tolerance, material properties and so on. MCS (Monte-Carlo simulation) is employed for this. Proposed methodology offers efficiency of dynamic analysis and reality of the field as well. Simple plates joined by fasteners are taken as an example to illustrate the proposed method.

  • This study showed the development process of structural design method of BHB(Blast Hardened Bulkhead) which are applicable in preliminary design stage. In the previous 1st report, the simplified structural scantling equations of BHB were formulated theoretically using the modified plastic hinge method supplemented by considering the membrane effects due to large plastic deformation. And the scantling methodology of plate thickness and section area of stiffeners of the curtain plate type BHB was dealt with. In the present 2nd report, derivation process of the correction factors which can adjust the developed scantling equations considering the uncertainties contained in the design parameters was introduced. Considering the actual BHB structures of 3 warship, the correction factors for the developed scantling equations for curtain plate type BHB were derived. Finally the applicability, validity of them and the strategy of future improvement were considered.

  • This study deals with the reliability analysis approach of the temporary structure that can consider the uncertainty in rotational stiffness at the joints of the members, for which the semi-rigid connections are modelled as rotational spring and its coefficient is treated as a random variable following uniform distribution. In addition, this study introduces a computational procedure of the effective length coefficient for more accurate buckling load according to connection conditions of the supporting members attached to the joint. From the results of this study, it can be seen that the failure probability of the joint-hinge model (Case 1) presented in the design standard is higher than that of the practical model (Case 5) considering the rotational stiffness at the joints. This implies that the design standard leads to a conservative design of the temporary structure. The results also confirmed that the failure probability of the vertical member, i.e., the most critical member, can be further reduced when the base connection is provided with a fixed end. The comparative results between FORM, SORM and MCS further demonstrated that FORM can have a high level of numerical efficiency while ensuring the accuracy of the solution, compared with SORM and MCS. Based on these results, the proposed approach can be used as an accurate and efficient reliability analysis method of the three dimensional temporary structure.

  • In this paper, a design of milli-gripper using piezoelectric actuator and flexible hinge structure has been suggested, and the dynamic characteristics of the milli-gripper has been analysed and improved. The milli-gripper consists of the operating and amplifier parts, and the perfomance of the gripper be heavily influenced by base excitation disturbances. The dynamic characteristics of milli-gripper has been measured by the FRF based on experimental modal analysis. It has been found by a series of experiments that the performance of the milli gripper using PID control is made a remarkable improvement in terms of gripping forces.

  • This paper presents the development of a micro gripper for grasping miniature sized parts in micro-assembly. Particularly, we have paid attention to the problem of manipulating objects of a well defined size range: the one between 1 mm and 0.1mm. In fact, objects larger than 1 mm can be easily handled by conventional precise grippers, while objects smaller than 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ can be manipulated with special tools like AFM or STM. In this range, we can distinguish between mechanical and biological objects. We have focused our gripping research on the micro mechanical objects. We started from a f degree of freedom planar configuration. The structure of the micro gripper was a type of the elastic flexure hinge and was fabricated in ...

  • The ultra-precision stage is demanded for some industrial fields such as semiconductor lithography, ultra-precision machining, and fabrication of nano structure. A new stage was developed for those applications in order to obtain nano meter resolution. This stage consists of symmetric double parallelogram mechanism using flexure hinges. The mechanical properties such as strength of the flexures and deformations along the applied force were analyzed using FEM. The stage is actuated by a piezoelectric actuator and its movement was measured by a ultra-precision linear encoder. In order to improve positioning performance, a PID controller was designed based on the identified second order transfer function. Experimental results showed that this stage could be positioned within below 5 nm resolution irrespective of hysteresis and creep by the controller.

  • Pounding is a major cause of bridge damage during earthquakes. In an extreme situation, it can even contribute to the unseating of bridge girders. Long-span bridges will inevitably experience spatially varying ground motions. Soil-structure interaction (SSI) may play a significant role in the structural response of these structures. The objective of this research is to experimentally investigate the effect of spatially varying ground motions on the response of a three-segment bridge considering SSI and pounding. To incorporate SSI, the model was placed on sand contained in sandboxes. The sandboxes were fabricated using soft rubber in order to minimise the rigid wall effect. The spatially varying ground motion inputs were simulated based on the New Zealand design spectra for soft soil, shallow soil and strong rock conditions, using an empirical coherency loss function. The results show that with pounding, SSI can amplify the pier bending moments and the relative opening displacements.

  • Due to the characteristic of culvert structure, the standard section of the culvert has been established and applied in field. However, this becomes a limitation in selecting a section design corresponding to various field conditions although it can improve the design and applicability of culvert structure. In order to overcome this limitation, we have developed the design and application technology of culvert structure corresponding to the field conditions that various shapes of culvert structure can be covered by assembly of precast segments. Because the structural characteristics of assembling-type waterway culvert structure, the thickness of structure and amount of reinforcing rods can vary according to the fixation or internal hinge status in the connection part of precast segments. This has a strong influence on the applicability and economic efficiency of culvert structure. Accordingly, in order to suggest a reasonable modeling technique of segment connection parts, this study has conducted the field experiment and numerical analysis. According to the results of field experiment and numerical analysis, the slab, wall and base slab with mortar splice sleeves have shown that the assembling-type of waterway culvert structure behaves like an integrated structure.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the seismic performance of weak-axis column-tree type connections used in steel moment frames. These connections are composed of a shop-welded and fieldbolted steel structure and can improve welding quality. On this basis, column-tree type connections are widely used in steel moment resisting frames in Korea and Japan. In this study, splices designed with a semirigid concept regarding the seismic performance of column-tree connections were experimentally evaluated. The structures can absorb energy in an inelastic state rather than the elastic state of the structures by the capacity design method. For this reason, the plastic hinge might be located at the splice connection at the weak-axis column-tree connection by reducing the splice plate thickness. The main variable was the distance from the edge of the column flange to the beam splice. CTY series specimens having column-tree connections with splice length of 600 mm and 900 mm were designed, respectively. For comparison with two specimens with the main variable, a base specimen with a weak-axis column-tree connection was fabricated and tested. The test results of three full-scale test specimens showed that the CTY series specimens successfully developed ductile behavior without brittle fracture until 5% story drift ratio. Although the base specimen reached a 5% story drift ratio, brittle fracture was detected at the backing bar near the beam-to-column connection. Comparing the energy dissipation capacity for each specimen, the CTY series specimens dissipated more energy than the base specimen.
