Unlike its archetype predecessor such as the Highway Capacity Manual of the United States, the Korean Highway Capacity Manual of 2013 provides the analytical models for estimating the saturation flow rates for the lane-occupying work-zones in the proximity of the signalized intersections. Direct application of the revised saturation flow rates into the classic control delay models, however, appears to produce unreasonable delay amount as traffic demand approaches lane-group capacities and surpasses them, which is common phenomena in the work-zones. Complex interaction among vehicles, lane-dropping work-zone geometry and signal operations were never accounted in the traditional control delay models, and considerable differences between the delay model outcomes and field observations are repeatedly experienced. This paper proposes the modified approaches to the delay models in the manual, exerted on all three elements of control delay, and particularly focuses on the temporal and spatial boundary expansion in comparing the simulated results to the estimated ones. Extensive microscopic simulation work and calibration effort supports the modified approaches well enough to use them in the work-zone planning and evaluation.
The objective of this Paper is to derive an adjustment factor for the presence of heavy vehicles when estimating capacity at unsignalized intersections (and/or at modern roundabouts). According to the 1997 and 2000 Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), potential capacity in such cases is estimated by simply adjusting base critical gap and base follow-up time. However, the procedure suggested in the HCM may lead to some errors in the adjustment, hence resulting in poor evaluation and design for the intersections, because it determines the value of adjusting factors by only the number of lanes on main streets regardless of the types of heavy vehicles. This paper shows a simple formula for making the adjustment. This formula is much like the HCM formula used for heavy vehicles in estimating highway capacity by the adoption of passenger car units (PCU). In contrast to the traditional approaches seen in the HCM, the PCU value of this case is explicitly expressed by the flow rate in the major streams and the gap difference in critical gaps chosen by passenger cars and particular heavy vehicles. Computational results of the adjustment factor are graphically illustrated.
The Provision of a Passing lane is strongly recommended When adeguate Passing Sight distance cannot be acguired at a Section of two-lane highway. Passing lanes are usually installed at two-lane highways along the shoulder area to minimize the impact of slow-moving heavy vehicles. The design concepts and specific dimension associated with the Passing lane construction are investigated in This research. In addition a case study was made using the field study data. Currently the level of service at the case study area was analyzed to be "F" based on 1985 Highway Capacity Manual procedure. With the installation of passing lanes, the level of service was improved into "C". A computer Simulation program developed by Australian Road Research Boand was utilized to analyze the effect of passing lanes.
Drivers select approach lane according to various traffic situations as well as their destination. This behavior affects the utilization of lanes and capacity analysis at urban signalized intersections. This paper presents the concept, behavior of lane utilization, and the lane utilization factors which included in the study. Preparation of Korean Highway Capacity Manual (1992). Lane utilization is affected by various traffic and geometric factors which are roadway side friction, median friction, and number of lanes, etc. and it converges to an equal utilization as the degree of saturation (V/C ratio) increase. Lane utilization factor is suggested by the degree of saturation and the number of lanes, and it is presented in this paper.
This study is to find a shortcoming embedded in the current Korean Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) on reflecting a heavy vehicle effect to the highway capacity. The KHCM suggests to handle the percent heavy vehicle to deal with its effect to a capacity regardless of density levels. Authors hypothesized in this study that the effect of heavy vehicles would vary at different levels of traffic density - the effect would be comparably insignificant when a density is low and it becomes comparably significant when it becomes high. Field data from a freeways located in Seoul were collected for 360 hours (15 days) and categorized them into a set of operation conditions grouped by 15 minutes and by the LOS density levels. Comparison between the field measured and the estimated by the KHCM method showed that the KHCM method overestimated the effect of heavy vehicles in LOS B and C but underestimated in LOS E. The results suggested that there be a difference pattern from the one the KHCM expected and brought discussion on further studies.
PURPOSES : Two-lane highways have one lane in each direction, and lane changing and passing maneuvers take place in the opposing lane depending on the availability of passing sight distance. 2001 Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) is classified into two classes of two-lane highways (Type I, II), and average travel speed and time-delayed rate are used as measures of effectiveness (MOEs). However, since existing two-lane highways have both uninterrupted and interrupted traffic flow-system elements, a variety of free-flow speeds exhibits in two-lane highways. In addition, it is necessary to check if the linear-relationship between volumes and time-delayed rate is appropriate. Then, this study is to reestablish the relationship between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow. METHODS : TWOPAS model was selected to conduct this study, and the free-flow speeds of passenger cars and the percentage of following vehicles observed in two-lane highways were applied to the model as the input. The revised relationships were developed from the computer simulation. RESULTS : In the revised average travel speed vs. flow relationship, the free-flow speed of 90km/h and 70km/h were added. It shows that the relationship between time delayed-rate and flow appeared to be appropriate with the log-function form and that there was no difference in time-delayed rate between the free flow speeds. In addition to revise the relationships, the speed prediction model and the time-delayed rate prediction model were also developed. CONCLUSIONS : The revised relationships between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow would be useful in estimating the Level of Service(LOS) of a two-lane highway.
PURPOSES : This study estimated an asphalt pavement internal behavior under uphill lanes considering reducing speed of heavy truck on uphill slope. METHODS : Truck performance curve which has been adapted to "Korea Highway Capacity Manual" was analyzed. And asphalt pavement internal behaviors were estimated with Multi-layered elastic analysis using KPRP(Korea Pavement Research Program) dynamic modulus prediction equations. RESULTS : As a result, it is shown that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% climbing slope, it's speed reduced to 25.4 km/h, at same time frequency in asphalt layer decrease to 67.2% and it's dynamic modulus degrades to 30.9%. Based on these results, internal behavior as decreasing vehicle speed on uphill lanes were estimated. CONCLUSIONS : From the results of Multi-layered elastic analysis, internal behavior showed that when the standard truck drives 2.0 km at a speed of 80 km/h in 8% slope on uphill lanes, vertical strain was increased to 44.4% at the bottom of surface course, and lateral tensile strain was increased to 20.5% at the bottom of base course.
It is very important to analyze the capacity of basic freeway section in terms of planning, design, and operation of roads. Capacity, in Korean Highway Capacity Manual was Published in 1992, had been determined by data collected in only 4-lane freeway. But, Korea is continuously planning and constructing multi-lane roads for increasing traffic demand. For this reason, it is necessary to determine the capacity for multi-lane freeways. This study goals are two-fold the determination of lane capacity for 8-lane freeway; and the development of methodology determining total capacity using lane friction factor This study utilized the data collected by loop detectors at a station of FTMS in Kyungbu expressway. For determining capacities, this study analyzed maximum flow rate in various aspects such as collecting period, each lane, and total lane in one-way. In addition, this study evaluated the breakdown in traffic flow relations in order to find out interrelation of breakdown among lanes. Through this analysis, this study determined lane friction factors, critical speed, and critical density. Finally, this study expressed a new methodology of capacity analysis for multi-lane freeways using some findings from this analysis.
This study is to define new road capacity concept, and to develop and propose an estimation method, through the analysis of individual vehicular behaviors in continuum flow. Developments in detection technology enable various and precise traffic data collection. The U.S. HCM (Highway Capacity Manual) method does not require such various and precise traffic data, and outputs only limited results. Alternative capacity concepts, which can be classified into a stochastic model and behavioral or deterministic model, are attempts for modeling some prominent traffic flow features, namely so-called a capacity drop and a traffic hysteresis, using such various and precise traffic data. Yet, no capacity concept up-to-date can describe both features. The analysis of individual vehicular behaviors, including speed-density plot per time lap, traffic flow-speed-density diagram per each sampling interval, time headway distribution, and free flow speed distribution, is performed for overcoming the limits of the previous capacity concepts. A stochastic methods are applied to determine time headway for estimating freeway capacity for traffic control.
This study is to estimate the through car equivalent for left-turn movement according to left turn radius in the signalized intersection. The saturation flow rate for left-turn movement in 92' KHCM(Korea Highway Capacity Manual) is the same as that for through movement in the signalized intersection where the left turn radius is over 20m. This study uses Duncan 'Test's Test in order to find out the saturated position for queued vehicle in the signalized intersection. It found that the saturated flow rate of left-turn movement in the signalized intersection is less than that of through movement where the left-turn radius is less than 20m. It found that the through car equivalents for left-turn movement according to left-turn radius(8m-20m) are between 1.05 and 1.14.
