고소성점토 및 실트의 비선형 압밀특성 (Nonlinear Compression Characteristics of Highly Plastic Clays and Silts)

  • Highly plastic clays in their normally consolidated state are not linear but are concave upwards. Thus their compression index deceases with the increase in consolidation pressure. Likeness the e - log ${\sigma}\;_{\upsilon}\;'$ curves of the silts are not linear but are convex upwards. In this paper, conducted consolidation test with four undisturbed field soil and found that their e - log ${\sigma}\;_{\upsilon}\;'$ plots are not linear. And analyzed difference of settlement between computed value with compression index($C_c$) and computed value with improved compression index($\mathbb{C}$).

고소성토의 비배수 특성에 관한 연구 II: 비배수강도 영향요소 (A Study on the Undrained Characteristics of Highly plastic soils II: Factors on Strength)

  • 본 연구에서는 고소성토 비배수강도와 주요 특성치들의 관계에 대하여 다양한 현장 및 실내시험 결과를 활용하여 심층적으로 고찰하였다. 소성지수, 활성도, 함수비 및 유효단위중량 등은 비배수강도 및 정규화 비배수강도 경우 모두 예상과 달리 특별한 관계를 보이지 않았다. 과압밀비, 예민비 및 비배수탄성계수 등은 정규화 비배수강도와 분명한 관계를 보여주었다. 정규화 비배수강도 방법이 비배수강도와 특성치들의 연구에 크게 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

Effect of Orientation on Plastic Deformation Behavior of Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Single Crystal

  • Yttria stabilized zirconia single crystals show plastic deformation at high temperatures by activating dislocations. The plastic deformation is highly dependent on crystallographic orientation. When the samples were deformed at different orientations, stress-strain curves changed by operating different slip systems. The strength of samples was also highly dependent on crystallographic orientation, i.e., samples without yield drop showed higher strength than that of samples exhibiting yield drop. The slip systems in the sample deformed along <112>, <111> and <001> agreed with the theoretical values of the plastic deformation, following Schmid's Law. Dislocations play a major role in the plastic deformation of this crystal. At the early stages of plastic deformation, all samples exhibited dislocation dipoles and, in the later stages, dislocation interactions occurred by forming nodes, tangles and networks. In this study, three different orientations, [11-2], [111] and [001] were employed to explain the plastic deformation behavior. A microstructural analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanism of the plastic behavior of this crystal.

  • Deviated nose is highly challenging in rhinoplasty since the surgeon should consider both aesthetic and functional aspects of the nose. Deviated nose correction is surgically complex, and a thorough understanding of the mechanical and physiological changes of intranasal structures, including the septum and turbinates, is necessary for functional improvement.

  • Severe temporal hollowing deformities can occur in patients who undergo craniectomy after intracranial hemorrhage. Reconstruction surgery for cosmetic purposes using silicone implants in patients with temporal hollowing deformities after craniectomy is advantageous because the procedure is simple and rapid, with a short recovery time, resulting in lower overall treatment costs. Of paramount importance, this option yields highly satisfactory results for patients. The authors present three cases of simple and fast surgery using silicone implants where highly satisfactory outcomes were obtained.

  • With the growing complexity of the U.S. health care system, highly motivated medical directors with strong leadership skills are vital to the success of health care facilities. Presently, there are no articles assessing a plastic surgeon's qualifications for the role of medical director. In addition, there is a paucity of literature comparing the responsibilities of medical directors across various types of health care institutions. Herein, we outline why plastic surgeons have the unique skillset to succeed in this role and highlight the differences between medical director positions across the vast landscape of health care. While the intricacies of this position vary greatly across different landscapes of the health care industry, successful medical directors lead by following a set of universal principles predisposing them for success. Plastic surgeons innately exhibit a subset of particular traits deeming them suitable candidates for the medical director position. While transitioning from the role of a surgeon to that of a medical director does require some show of adaptation, plastic surgeons are ultimately highly likely to find intrinsic benefit from serving as a medical director.

한국 남부 해안 고소성 점토 및 실트의 비선형 압축특성 연구 (Nonlinear Compression Characteristics of Highly Plastic Clays and Silts of Korea South Coast)

  • 고소성 점토 및 소성, 비소성 실트의 정규압밀상태시의 처녀압축곡선이 항상 선형적 거동을 하는 것은 아니며, 비선형성을 가진 한국의 남해안 점토의 경우 압밀압력이 증가함에 따라 압축지수가 감소하며, $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$곡선은 아래로 오목한 형태의 거동을 하는 것으로 연구되었다. 본 연구에서는 한국 남부 해안의 점토를 대상으로 압밀시험을 수행하였고, 결과를 분석하여 초기간극비, 액성한계, 소성지수와 압축지수의 비선형성을 분석하였다. Butterfield의 기법을 이용한 ${\ln}{\upsilon}-{\ln}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$에서 액성한계 50~100%사이의 처녀압축곡선은 선형성을 보였으나, 초기간극비 2.24%, 액성한계 100%, 소성지수 60이상에서의 고소성 점토의 시험결과에서는 뚜렷한 비선형성이 나타났다. 비소성 실트(fly ash)를 90%이상 함유한 재성형 시료의 경우 압밀압력이 증가함에 따라 압축지수가 증가하는 경향을 보였다.

The Rolling Earlobe Flap for Dilated Ear Holes Following Ear Gauging: A Novel Approach to Aesthetically Preserving Earlobe Soft Tissue Volume

  • Patients are increasingly seeking repair of their earlobes following ear gauging. Research has shown that current repair techniques either excessively reduce the lobular volume or leave an obvious scar along the free edge of the earlobe. In our case series, we describe the use of a novel technique for repairing earlobes following ear gauging using a rolling earlobe flap that preserves the lobular volume and avoids leaving a scar on the free edge of the lobule. The procedure was performed on 3 patients (6 earlobes) who had defects from ear gauging that ranged from 3.0 to 6.5 cm. There were no postoperative complications of infection, wound dehiscence, flap necrosis, hypertrophic scars, or keloids, and all patients were highly satisfied with the postoperative results. This versatile technique allows for an aesthetically pleasing reconstruction of the lobule with the advantages of: the absence of a surgical scar on the free edge of the lobule, preserving the lobule volume, and presenting a highly customizable technique that allows lobules to be created with various shapes and volumes.

Empirical Treatment of Highly Suspected Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Infections Following Aesthetic Procedures

  • Background Infection caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) has been increasing. Awareness of this infection is crucial yet problematic. Delayed management may lead to destructive results. We empirically treated a series of patients with clinical suspicion of NTM infection prior to the identification of the pathogen. Methods A total of 12 patients who developed surgical site infections between January 2011 and February 2014 were reviewed. Patients with a skin and subcutaneous infection resistant to standard management over two weeks, and previous history of aesthetic procedures within three months were regarded as highly suspected of having an NTM infection. A variety of diagnostic modalities were examined simultaneously, along with starting empirical treatment including a combination of clarithromycin and moxifloxacin, and surgical debridement. Results All wounds healed completely within 4 weeks. The mean follow-up duration was 7.2 months, and none of the patients developed relapse. Specific NTM pathogens were identified in six patients. Eight patients showed caseating granuloma implying an NTM infection. One patient showed an uncommon Stenotrophomonas infection, which was successfully treated. Three patients had no evidence of a pathogen despite repeated microbial tests. Complications such as scarring, pigmentation, and disfigurement were common in all the patients. Conclusions NTM should be considered in the differential diagnosis of an unusual skin and soft-tissue infection. We propose an empirical regimen of clarithromycin and moxifloxacin as an efficient treatment option for an NTM infection.

  • 본 연구에서는 고소성토 비배수 특성치들의 관계에 대하여 다양한 현장 및 실내시험 결과를 활용하여 고찰하였다. 예민비는 간극비 및 과압밀비와 비례경향이었으나 유효단위중량과는 반비례 경향이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 일축압축, 비압밀비배수 삼축압축, 현장베인실험에서 구한 비배수강도의 차이는 예민비, 간극비, 과압밀비 등과 비례, 또는 반비례 등 확실한 경향이 있음을 보여주었다. 다양한 특성치들 간의 경험식 및 적절한 실험방법의 선택을 위한 지표설정 등의 가능성이 확인되었다.
