  • In this paper, a finite element (FE) simulation has been developed in order to examine the nonlinear stability of reinforced sandwich beams with graphene oxide powders (GOPs). In this regard, the nonlinear stability curves have been obtained asuming that the beam is under compressive loads leading to its buckling. The beam is considered to be a three-layered sandwich beam with metal core and GOP reinforced face sheets and it is rested on elastic substrate. Moreover, a higher-order refined beam theory has been considered to formulate the sandwich beam by employing the geometrically perfect and imperfect beam configurations. In the solving procedure, the utalized finite element simulation contains a novel beam element in which shear deformation has been included. The calculated stability curves of GOP-reinforced sandwich beams are shown to be dependent on different parameters such as GOP amount, face sheet thickness, geometrical imperfection and also center deflection.

  • In this paper, dynamic buckling of truncated conical shell made of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite is studied. In aerospace industries, this category of structures is utilized extensively due to wide range of engineering applications. To calculate the effective material properties of the nanocomposite, The Mori-Tanaka model is applied. Also, the motion equations are derived with the assistance of the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), Hamilton's principle and energy method. Besides, In order to solve motion equations and analyze dynamic instability region (DIR) of the structure, mixed model of differential quadrature method (DQM) and Bolotin's method is used. Moreover, investigation of the different parameters effects such as geometrical parameters and volume fraction of CNTs on the analysis of the DIR of the structure is done. In accordance with the obtained results, the DIR will occur at higher frequencies by increasing the volume fraction of CNTs.

  • In this paper, buckling and free vibration of imperfect, functionally graded beams, including porosities, are investigated, using a higher order shear strain theory. Due to defects during the manufacturing process, micro porosities may appear in the material, hence the appearance of this imperfection in the structure. The material properties of the beams are assumed to vary regularly, with power and sigmoid law, in the direction of thickness. A novel porosity distribution affecting the functionally graded volume fraction is presented. For the compact formulation used for cementite-based materials and already used in P-FGM, we have adapted it for the distribution of S-FGM. The equations of motion in the FG beam are derived using Hamilton's principle. The boundary conditions for beam FG are assumed to be simply supported. Navier's solution is used to obtain the closed form solutions of the FG beam. The numerical results of this work are compared with those of other published research to verify accuracy and reliability. The comparisons of different shear shape functions, the influence of porosity, thickness and inhomogeneity parameters on buckling and free vibration of the FG beam are all discussed. It is established that the present work is more precise than certain theories developed previously.

  • This paper deals with the low velocity impact response and dynamic stresses of composite sandwich truncated conical shells (STCS) with compressible or incompressible core. Impacts are assumed to occur normally over the top face-sheet and the interaction between the impactor and the structure is simulated using a new equivalent three-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) spring-mass-damper (SMD) model. The displacement fields of core and face sheets are considered by higher order and first order shear deformation theory (FSDT), respectively. Considering continuity boundary conditions between the layers, the motion equations are derived based on Hamilton's principal incorporating the curvature, in-plane stress of the core and the structural damping effects based on Kelvin-Voigt model. In order to obtain the contact force, the displacement histories and the dynamic stresses, the differential quadrature method (DQM) is used. The effects of different parameters such as number of the layers of the face sheets, boundary conditions, semi vertex angle of the cone, impact velocity of impactor, trapezoidal shape and in-plane stresses of the core are examined on the low velocity impact response of STCS. Comparison of the present results with those reported by other researchers, confirms the accuracy of the present method. Numerical results show that increasing the impact velocity of the impactor yields to increases in the maximum contact force and deflection, while the contact duration is decreased. In addition, the normal stresses induced in top layer are higher than bottom layer since the top layer is subjected to impact load. Furthermore, with considering structural damping, the contact force and dynamic deflection decrees.

  • In this article, large amplitude bending behaviour of laminated composite flat panel under combined effect of moisture, temperature and mechanical loading is investigated. The laminated composite panel model has been developed mathematically by introducing the geometrical nonlinearity in Green-Lagrange sense in the framework of higher-order shear deformation theory. The present study includes the degraded composite material properties at elevated temperature and moisture concentration. In order to achieve any general case, all the nonlinear higher order terms have been included in the present formulation and the material property variations are introduced through the micromechanical model. The nonlinear governing equation is obtained using the variational principle and discretised using finite element steps. The convergence behaviour of the present numerical model has been checked. The present proposed model has been validated by comparing the responses with those available published results. Some new numerical examples have been solved to show the effect of various parameters on the bending behaviour of laminated composite flat panel under hygro-thermo-mechanical loading.

  • In this work, mathematical modeling of the passive vibration controls of a three-layered sandwich beam under hard excitation is developed. Kelvin-Voigt Viscoelastic model is considered in the core. The formulation is based on the higher-order zig-zag theories where the normal and shear deformations are taken into account only in the viscoelastic core. The dynamic behaviour of the beam is represented by a complex highly nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The method of multiple scales is adopted to solve the analytical frequency-amplitude relationships in the super-harmonic resonance case. Parametric studies are carried out by using HSDT and first-order deformation theory by considering different geometric and material parameters.

  • We in this article study nonlinear thermal buckling of bi-directional functionally graded beams in the theoretical frameworks of nonlocal strain graded theory. To begin with, it is assumed that the effective material properties of beams vary continuously in both the thickness and width directions. Then, we utilize a higher-order shear deformation theory that includes a physical neutral surface to derive the size-dependent governing equations combining with the Hamilton's principle and the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ geometric nonlinearity. It should be pointed out that the established model, containing a nonlocal parameter and a strain gradient length scale parameter, can availably account for both the influence of nonlocal elastic stress field and the influence of strain gradient stress field. Subsequently, via using a easier group of initial asymptotic solutions, the corresponding analytical solution of thermal buckling of beams is obtained with the help of perturbation method. Finally, a parametric study is carried out in detail after validating the present analysis, especially for the effects of a nonlocal parameter, a strain gradient length scale parameter and the ratio of the two on the critical thermal buckling temperature of beams.

  • In this paper, a higher order shear deformation theory for bending analysis of functionally graded plates resting on Pasternak foundation and under various boundary conditions is exposed. The proposed theory is based on the assumption that porosities can be produced within functionally graded plate which may lead to decline in strength of materials. In this research a novel distribution of porosity according to the thickness of FG plate are supposing. Governing equations of the present theory are derived by employing the virtual work principle, and the closed-form solutions of functionally graded plates have been obtained using Navier solution. Numerical results for deflections and stresses of several types of boundary conditions are presented. The exactitude of the present study is confirmed by comparing the obtained results with those available in the literature. The effects of porosity parameter, slenderness ratio, foundation parameters, power law index and boundary condition types on the deflections and stresses are presented.
