The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength and failure mode of ceramic brackets according to the surface treatment of porcelain. Sixty Porcelain samples were randomly divided into six groups of ten samples. Then they were treated as follows: Group 1(silane only), Group 2(etching+silane), Group 3(stone+silane), Group 4(sandblasting+silane), Group 5(stone +etching+silane), Group 6(sandblasting+etching+silane) After surface treatment of porcelain, sixty Transcend 6000 brackets were bonded to the prepared porcelain surface and they were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ saline for 24 hours. An Instron universal testing machine was used to test the shear bond strength of ceramic brackets to porcelain. After debonding, bases of ceramic brackets and porcelain surfaces were examined under scanning electron microscope(SEM) to determine failure mode. Statistical analysis of the data was carried out with one-way ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test. The results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of surface-treated groups 2 to 6 was higher than that of only silane-treated group 1, and there was statistical significance. (P<0.05) 2. There was no significant difference among the groups 3 to 6. (P>0.05) 3. The shear bond strength of etching-surface treated group 2 was significantly lower than those of sandblasting-surface treated group 4, complex surface treated group 5 and group 6. 4. According to the scanning electromicroscopic images, the surface roughness of sandblasting-surface treated group 4 was less than those of the group 5 and 6, but there was no significant difference in the shear bond strength. (P>0.05) As a conclusion we can have a clinically adequate bond strength when an application of silane is done after the treatment of porcelain surface with more than one way to bond ceramic bracket on the porcelain. Also, it is considered that the sandblasting and application of silane is effective for the simplication and convenience of the treatment.
This study was to evaluate the efficacy of sanitizer concentrations and treatment time against two major toad-borne pathogenic microorganisms such as Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus on a stainless steel surface. As a result, stainless steel, treated with 100 ppm of chlorine showed reduction of E. coli(1.56, 1.49, 1.95 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) and S. aureus(0.49, 0.88, 1.27 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) after 0, 5 and 10 min, but none was not detected in treatment with 200 ppm. The population of E. coli(0.73, 0.90, 1.55 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) and S. aureus(0.37, 1.00, 1.45 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) reduced in 35.5% ethanol treated group, but none was not detected in treatment with 70%. The population was reduced E coli(0.28, 0.64, 1.07 cfu/25 $cm^2$) and S. aureus(0.53, 0.87, 0.99 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) by treatment with 45.5 ppm of hydrogen peroxide, but none was not detected in treatment with 91 ppm. Quarternary ammonium compound with 100 ppm was reduced E. coli(0.82, 1.62, 1.71 log cfu/25 $cm^2$) and S. aureus(0.46, 0.93, 1.38 log cfu/25 $cm^2$), but none was not detected in treatment with 200 ppm. Predictive models of sterilization for all 4 disinfectants were suitable to use with $r^2$ value of higher than 0.94. These models may be of use to food services and manufacture of safe products by controlling E. coli and S. aureus without the need for further detection of the organisms.

Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to estimate surface characteristic after peptide coating and investigate biological response of human mesenchymal stem cell to anodized titanium discs coated with RGD peptide by physical adhesion and chemical fixation. Materials and methods: Fluorescence isothiocyanate (FITC) modified RGD-peptide was coated on the anodized titanium discs (diameter 12 mm, height 3 mm) using two methods. One was physical adhesion method and the other was chemical fixation method. Physical adhesion was performed by dip and dry procedure, chemical fixation was performed by covalent bond via silanization. In this study, human mesenchymal stem cell was used for experiments. The experiments consisted of surface characteristic evaluation after peptide coating, analysis about cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and mineralization. Obtained data are statistically treated using Kruskal-Wallis test and Bonferroni test was performed as post hoc test (P=.05). Results: The evaluation of FE-SEM images revealed no diffenrence at micro-surfaces between each groups. Total coating dose was higher at physical adhesion experimental group than at chemical fixation experimental group. In cell adhesion and proliferation, RGD peptide coating did not show a statistical significance compared with control group (P>.05). In cell differentiation and mineralization, physical adhesion method displayed significantly increased levels compared with control group and chemical fixation method (P<.05). Conclusion: RGD peptide coating seems to enhance osseointegration by effects on the response of human mesenchymal stem cell. Especially physical adhesion method showed more effective than chemical fixation method on response of human mesenchymal stem cell.
It is known that $MgAl_2O_4$ has higher resistance to moisture than MgO, in humid ambient MgO is chemically unstable. It reacts very easily with moisture in the air. In this study, the characteristic of $MgAl_2O_4$ and $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ layers as dielectric protection layers for AC- PDP (Plasma Display Panel) have been investigated and analysed in comparison for conventional MgO layers. MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$ films both with a thickness of $1000\AA$ and $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ film with a thickness of $200/800\AA$ were grown on the Cu substrates using the electron beam evaporation. $1000\AA$ thick aluminium layers were deposited on the protective layers in order to avoid the charging effect of $Ga^+$ ion beam while the focused ion beam(FIB) is being used. We obtained sputtering yieds for the MgO, $MgAl_2O_4$ and $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ films using the FIB system. $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ protective layers have been found th show $24{\sim}30%$ lower sputtering yield values from 0.244 up to 0.357 than MgO layers with the values from 0.364 up to 0.449 for irradiated $Ga^+$ ion beam with energies ranged from 10 kV to 14 kV. And $MgAl_2O_4$ layers have been found to show lowest sputtering yield values from 0.88 up to 0.109. Secondary electron emission coefficient(g) using the ${\gamma}$- FIB. $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ and MgO have been found to have similar g values from 0.09 up to 0.12 for indicated $Ne^+$ ion with energies ranged from 50 V to 200 V. Observed images for the surfaces of MgO and $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ protective layers, after discharge degradation process for 72 hours by SEM and AFM. It is found that $MgAl_2O_4/MgO$ protective layer has superior hardness and degradation resistance properties to MgO protective layer.

The objective of this study is to examine the condylar surfaces in order to find out the types, the incidence and common occurrence area of the osseous abnormalities of the condyles according to the age, genders and the purpose of CT taking, and to compare those between the groups for TMD diagnosis and the other groups. 3D CT images of 199 patients which were scanned with the $i-CAT^{TM}$ Cone Beam Computed Tomography were collected from Sanbon Dental Hospital of Wonkwang university and the MPR images were transfered to the TMJ mode to be showed serial sagittal images and coronal images. The images were macroscopically examined by three independent observers for the types and incidences of the osseous abnormalities, their common occurrence area and general shapes of the condyles. As a result, type F is most common ever than type N. The common occurrence area in sagittal images is antero-superior and superior area except for type D-C which were showed on postero-superior area commonly. In coronal images, latero-superior and superior area is most common except for type E which were present on mesio-superior and superior area most frequently. The osseous abnormalities of the condyles are more common in TMD diagnosis group except for type D-C, that is type N and type D-C are more common in the other groups. In this study, abnormalities of the condyles are classified into 6 types and it has a common occurrence area each. And TMD diagnosis group shows a tendency to have higher rate for osseous abnormalities except for type D-C.

This study evaluated the influence of chemomechanical caries removal agent $Carisolv^{TM}$(MediTeam, Sweden) for composite resin adhesion to sound human permanent and primary dentin. The buccal/labial surfaces of 80 permanent molars and 80 primary incisors were used. Four types of adhesives and one composite resin were used; AQ Bond(Sun Medical, Japan), Clearfil SE Bond(Kuraray, Japan), Single Bond(3M, USA), Scotchbond Multi-Purpose(3M, USA) and Z100(3M, USA). One drop of $Carisolv^{TM}$(MediTeam, Sweden) was pretreated on the dentin for 0 second(control) and 60 seconds. The specimens were thermocycled for 1,000 times in baths kept 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C with a 30 seconds dwell time. Shear bond strengths were tested and the data was statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA with subsequent post hoc Scheffe test at p<0.05. $Carisolv^{TM}$ treatment significantly decreased the shear bond strength. Shear bond strength of permanent dentin was significantly higher than that of primary dentin. Clearfil SE Bond treatment groups showed the highest shear bond strength and AQ Bond treatment groups showed the lowest shear bond strength.
Bentonite layers are intercalated within the basal conglomerates in the Tertiary sedimentary basins of Kampo, Janggi and Pohang, southeastern Korea. Eighteen samples of the bentonites went through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, heavy mineral analyses, chemical analyses and oxygen, hydrogen stable isotope analyses to define the mineralogical characters of the bentonites. Heavy minerals such as zircons, apatites, amphiboles and biotites separated from bentonites show clean and euhedral surfaces, which are the characteristic features of volcanic origin. But biotites from the Chunbook Conglomerate are found as altered and heavily broken flakes which implies longer transportation of these bentonites. $TiO_{2}/Al_{2}O_{3} ratios of <2 $\mu$m particle fractions (the Chunbook Conglomerate 0.031; Janggi 0.029; Kampo 0.025) suggest that those are originated from volcanic tuffs. That is, the higher the value is, the more mafic in chemical compositions of the original tuffs. Authigenic montmorillonite and zeolite minerals were observed by SEM, which indicates diagenesis origin of bentonites. But the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate showed only chaotically packed clay flakes in the matrix of sands or conglomerates, which implies detrital influence, not authigenic origin. The structural formulae of montmorillonite from these basins reflects their environment of formation. Fe (Ⅵ) can show the redox condition of its past environment and much lower $Fe^{2+}(Ⅵ)/Fe^{3+}(Ⅵ)$ ratios in montmorillonite of the Chunbook Conglomerate imply the greater oxidizing influence. Calculated burial depths from oxygen stable isotope data of the samples from the Chunbook Conglomerate generally fall to the range of 929~963 m whereas the real burial depth of this area is only 530~580 m. This could be explained as the bentonites of the Chunbook conglomerate had not been formed in situ. Discriminant analyses with the data from chemical analyses and structural formulae of montmorillonites show that bentonites from three different basins could definitely be distinguished with each other. This result arises from the different chemical compositions of original volcanic ashes and the difference of sedimentary environments.
Statement of problem: Recently researches about WC/C (Tungsten Carbide/Carbon) or TiN (Titanium Nitride) coating on abutment screws are going on. It decreases friction coefficient, resistance against corrosion and withdrawal of physical fragility when the coating is applied to the metal surfaces. It is reported that coated abutment screws improved abrasion, adaptability and detorque force. Purpose: This study is about the effects of coated abutment screws on loosening of screw and for the purpose of solving the loosening phenomenon of abutment screws which is clinical problem. Material and methods: Detorque force and surface changes are compared when 10 times of repeated closing and opening are applied to both uncoated titanium abutment screws (Group A) and coated abutment screws with WC/C (Group B) and TiN (Group C). Each group was made up of 10 abutment screws. Results: 1. Before repeated closing and opening, Somewhat rough surface with regular direction was observed in Group A. Coated granules were observed in group B and group C and overall coated layer appeared in regular and smooth form. 2. Before repeated closing and opening, The coated surface showed bigger and thicker size of coated granules in Group C than Group B. 3. After repeated closing and opening, abrasion and deformation of abutment screw surface was observed in Group A and Group B. Exfoliation phenomenon was observed in Group B. 4. Group A showed biggest range of decrease when the weight changes of abutment screws were measured before and after repeated closing and opening. Group C showed less weight changes than Group B but there was no statistical difference between two groups. 5. Group B and Group C showed higher average detorque force than Group A and there was statistical difference. 6. Group A showed more prominent decrease tendency of average detorque force than Group B and Group C. Conclusion: Coated abutment screws with WC/C or TiN did not show prominent surface changes than uncoated titanium abutment screws even though they were repeatedly used. And they showed excellent resistance against friction and high detorque force. Thus it is considered that adaptation of WC/C or TiN coating on abutment screws will improve the screw loosening problem.

Many studies regarding Casein phosphopeptides-amorphous calcium phosphate(CPP-ACP) have demonstrated the remineralization ability on the demineralized enamel surface. A question is still remained that how deep can the calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) ions supplied by the CPP-ACP paste penetrate into the enamel subsurface. The aims of this study were to measure the penetrating depth of Ca and P ions in the demineralized human enamel in vitro, and were to determine the amount and depth of Ca and P ions according to the duration. The amount and depth of Ca and P ions were measured by microscopic observation with Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM; LEO SUPRA 55, Carl Zeiss, Germany) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer (EDS; GENESIS 2000, EDAX, USA: Linescan of Calcium and Phosphorus). Freshly extracted four human 1st premolars were obtained from the Dept. of Pediatric Dent., Kyung Hee Univ. Buccal surfaces of the 1st premolars were covered with nail varnish to form a window on the middle third of buccal surface. All of the teeth with enamel windows were immersed in a solution of 0.1 M lactic acid, Carbopol C907 (carboxypolymethylene BF Goodrich, Cleveland, OH, USA) at pH 4.8, and then incubated for 7 days. Each tooth crown was sawn in half through the midline of buccal window along the long axis of premolar. The four blocks of premolars were immersed in a 10-times diluted solution of CPP-ACP paste (Tooth Mousse, GC Corp., Tokyo, Japan) for 1, 2, 3 and 5 weeks while the rests were immersed in a placebo solution (distilled water) for the same duration. Each specimen was embedded in epoxy resin, and was sectioned perpendicular to the window, using a water-cooled diamond blade saw. The spectrum density indices of Ca and P were measured in the sound, de- and remineralized enamels by FE-SEM and EDS. The Student's t test was performed to compare the Spectrum Density Indices (SDI) of sound, re-and demineralized enamels, and to compare the differences among the durations. Followings are the conclusion : 1. The penetration depth of the remineralizing ions (Ca & P) of CPP-ACP paste is related to the depth of demineralized enamel (approximately $1050{\sim}1350{\mu}m$). It is revealed that the penetration depth of both ions reaches full thickness of decalcification and even slightly into the sound enamel. 2. The Ca & P levels of remineralized enamels in 1, 2 weeks were significantly higher than those of the sound enamels (p<0.05). 3. No statistically significant difference of Ca & P levels was found in relation with the increasing duration of remineralization (p>0.05).
During a composite resin restoration, an anticipating contraction gap is usually tried to seal with low-viscosity resin after successive polishing, etching, rinsing and drying steps, which as a whole is called rebonding procedure. However, the gap might already have been filled with water or debris before applying the sealing resin. We hypothesized that microleakage would decrease if the rebonding agent was applied before the polishing step, i.e., immediately after curing composite resin. On the buccal and lingual surfaces of 35 extracted human molar teeth, class V cavities were prepared with the occlusal margin in enamel and the gingival margin in dentin. They were restored with a hybrid composite resin Z250 (3M ESPE, USA) using an adhesive AdperTM Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE). As rebonding agents, BisCover LV (Bisco, USA), ScotchBond Multi-Purpose adhesive (3M ESPE) and an experimental adhesive were applied on the restoration margins before polishing step or after successive polishing and etching steps. The infiltration depth of 2% methylene blue into the margin was measured using an optical stereomicroscope. The correlation between viscosity of rebonding agents and mciroleakage was also evaluated. There were no statistically significant differences in the microleakage within the rebonding procedures, within the rebonding agents, and within the margins. However, when the restorations were not rebonded, the microleakage at gingival margin was significantly higher than those groups rebonded with 3 agents (p < 0.05). The difference was not observed at the occlusal margin. No significant correlation was found between viscosity of rebonding agents and microleakage, except very weak correlation in case of rebonding after polishing and etching at gingival margin.
