  • We surveyed diversity, distribution and diversity change of mammalian species in forests of the Nature Environment Research Park (Survey Area I; reservoir and surrounding forests, II; human habitat and surrounding forests and III; mountain forests) in Gangwon Province from 2004 to 2008. During our study, endangered species like Peromys volans, Lutra lutra and Prionailurus bengalensis were present in the surveyed areas. Diversity of mammalian species tends to be a little higher in the Survey Area I and III than the Survey Area II. Annual species diversity was a little higher in 2006, and then there was a little reduction from 2007. However, there was higher reduction in the number of individuals from 2007. Therefore, our results indicate that specific measures are needed for preservation of mammalian habitats to maintain the species diversity and the number of mammalian individuals.

  • The major issues that higher education has recently faced are the shortage of students of school age, the changing environment of higher education and the evolving technology. These challenges have urged the university facilities and space to be managing more efficient and more effective. This study assures that the strong strategy is to operate more like business while retaining unique higher education values and a sound facilities management system and appropriate budget help to ensure that university facilities are good for student and teacher's demand. With such faith, this study explores the facilities/space maintaining status and the facility management system of national universities and collages. It finds that there are some problems to adapt new managing methodologies in national universities and that there are also some gaps and perceived constraints to effective space management. This study proposes the alternatives for the facilities managing system that involves the improvement of manpower structure, the expansion of budget scale and the establishment of appropriate facility management system. Finally it provides the practical tools for the effective space and facilities management such as space charging, space standards, central timetabling, space utilisation survey and facilities performance indication.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore high school students' environmental literacy and from its result, to suggest ways to reform environmental education. 1047 students from Seoul and Kyeongki province participated in the survey. The questionnaire consisted of four criteria of environmental literacy including knowledge, skill, attitude and behavior. The result was analyzed and the factors which affect high school students environmental literacy were explored. From this result, we made suggestions to improve environmental education as follows. First, environmental education in school should focus on knowledge criterion. Though school environmental education has been helpful for students to build environmental literacy in attitude and behavior criteria, its effect has not been good enough in knowledge criterion. Second, science education can enhance students' environmental literacy. Students who like science best and students who belong to science major classes were reported to possess better understanding in knowledge criterion. Also, students who like life science appeared to have a more positive attitude in environmental literacy. Third, informal education must be considered to form students' environmental literacy. In particular, the effect of mass media is inarguable. Thus, we should find a way to link formal education and informal education to improve environmental education. Fourth, high school students' interest in the environment must be encouraged since it is evident that higher interest would result in better outcome in environmental education.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop basic data for the prevention of shipboard disasters and measures to improve the safety and health of seafarers by using a survey on the safety and health activities of seafarers. The questionnaire was administered to 437 people who have worked on a ship in the last six months. According to the results from the analyses (t-test, crosstab, and ANOVA), the level of safety and health activities of seafarers averaged at 68.82 points. The workplace clearance was the highest at 76.08 points, and the safety and health management system were the lowest at 62.78 points. As a result of the differences in the level of safety and health activities, the number of marine workers was higher than workers on land, and higher education was higher than lower education (p<0.01). It was higher for workers in coastal zones than for those in pelagic areas, and special cargo ships were higher than other ship types (p<0.01). Larger ships had a higher number of activities than small ships, and ships that were less than five years old had more activities (p<0.01). Therefore, in order to raise the level of safety and health activities of seafarers, it is necessary to develop safety and health education programs that take individual, job, and ship characteristics into consideration, and promote active safety and health activities on ships.

  • The current study examined the effects of early social support of first-time mothers on the home environment for their preschool-aged children via the mediation of mothers' depression. The study sample included 755 first-time mothers participating in the Panel Study on Korean Children(PSKC). Using Structural Equation Modeling(SEM), the longitudinal structure from mothers' social support when the child is one year old to the quality of the home environment when the child is 4 years old was examined. The results revealed that mothers' social support at age 1 predicted social support at age 3, which in turn predicted higher quality of the home environment for their children at age 4. The mediation of depression was also significant. Mothers' social support predicted lower levels of depression at both phases and mothers' depression was significantly associated with the quality of the home environment.
