Remote sensing data is collected and analyzed to enhance understanding of the terrestrial surface. Since Landsat satellite was launched in 1972, many researches using multispectral data has been achieved. Recently, with the availability of airborne and satellite hyperspectral data, the study on hyperspectral data are being increased. It is known that as the number of spectral bands of high-spectral resolution data increases, the ability to detect more detailed cases should also increase, and the classification accuracy should increase as well. In this paper, we classified the hyperspectral and multispectral data and tested the classification accuracy. The MASTER(MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator, 50channels, 0.4~13$\mu$m) and Landsat TM(7channels) imagery including Yeong-Gwang area were used and we adjusted the classification items in several cases and tested their classification accuracy through statistical comparison. As a result of this study, it is shown that hyperspectral data offer more information than multispectral data.
This research intended to estimate the damage information from torrential rainfalls using airphotos and spatial data which have been rapidly increasing their applicability recently. The study area was Bonghwagun of Gyungsangbukdo where the large amount of damages were occurred from torrential rainfall in July, 2008. For this study, the database was constructed for the study area by collecting usable data. The interpretable items from the airphotos of 40cm spatial resolution were selected. Also, the useful GIS layers such as road were selected in the digital map to extract the damage information more accurately and rapidly. The damaged area was easily identified through the comparison of pre- and post-disaster airphotos. The recovery cost was estimated by applying unit cost to the damaged area. GIS's overlay function was used to extract the damage information of for individual items damaged. The method for extracting damages information using GIS and airphotos could be more efficient and cost effective in case of relatively wide and unapproachable damaged areas. It is also expected that the method using high resolution imagery would lead to minimize the secondary damages as well since it can facilitate the damage estimation within short period of time thereby supporting early securing budget for recovery.
Estimation of chlorophyll a concentration (CHL) on coastal areas using remote sensing has been mostly performed through multi-spectral satellite image analysis. Recently, various studies using hyperspectral imagery have been attempted. In particular, airborne hyperspectral imagery is composed of hundreds of bands with a narrow band width and high spatial resolution, and thus may be more effective in coastal areas than estimation of CHL through conventional satellite image. In this study, comparative analysis of hyperspectral and satellite-based CHL images was performed to estimate CHL in coastal areas. As a result of analyzing CHL and seawater spectrum data obtained by field survey conducted on the south coast of Korea, the seawater spectrum with high CHL peaked near the wavelength bands of 570 and 680 nm. Using this spectral feature, a new band ratio of 570 / 490 nm for estimating CHL was proposed. Through regression analysis between band ratio and the measured CHL were generated new CHL empirical formula. Validation of new empirical formula using the measured CHL showed valid results, with R2 of 0.70, RMSE of 2.43 mg m-3, and mean bias of 3.46 mg m-3. As a result of applying the new empirical formula to hyperspectral and satellite images, the average RMSE between hyperspectral imagery and the measured CHL was 0.12 mg m-3, making it possible to estimate CHL with higher accuracy than multi-spectral satellite images. Through these results, it is expected that it is possible to provide more accurate and precise spatial distribution information of CHL in coastal areas by utilizing hyperspectral imagery.

Recently, large-scale multi-hazards have been occurred in the various areas of the world. A variety of Earth observation sensors such as satellite EO, aerial and terrestrial LiDAR have been utilized for global natural disaster monitoring. Especially, commercial satellites which observe the Earth regularly and repeatedly, and acquire images with cm-level high spatial resolution enable its applications to extend in the fields of disaster management from advanced disaster monitoring to timely recovery. However, due to existing satellite operation systems with some limitations in almost real-time and wide regional disaster response, close international collaborations between satellite operating organizations like NASA, JAXA, KARI etc. have been required for collecting satellite images in time through a satellite platform with multi-sensors or satellite constellation. For responding domestic natural disaster such as heavy snowfall and extreme rainfall in 2011, this paper proposes a disaster management system for timely decision-making; rapid acquisition of satellite imagery, data processing, GIS analysis, and digital mapping through cooperation with NDMI in Korea and International Charter-Space and Major disasters.

Many applications in the areas of agricultural, hydrological and environmental resource management require data over very large areas and with a high imaging frequency - monitoring crop growth, water stress, seasonal wetland flooding and natural vegetation development. This precludes the use of fine resolution data (Landsat, Spot) on the grounds of cost, accessibility and low imaging frequency. Meteorological satellites have the potential to fill this need, given their very wide spatial coverage, and high repeat imaging. The Remote Sensing Unit (RSU) at the Zambia Meteorological Department routinely receives, processes and archives imagery from both Meteosat and NOAA AVHRR satellites. Here I wish to present some examples of applications of these data sets that arise from the RSU work - relationships between rainfall and vegetation development as assessed by satellite, derived information and seasonal patterns of flooding in the Barotse floodplain and the Kafue flats. I also wish to outline ways in which a more widespread use of this data by the Zambian institutions canbe achieved.
As land remote sensing applications are expanding to the extraction of quantitative information, the importance of atmospheric correction is increasing. Considering the difficulty of atmospheric correction for land images, it should be applied when it is necessary. The quantitative information extraction and time-series analysis on biophysical variables in land surfaces are two major applications that need atmospheric correction. Atmospheric aerosol content and column water vapor, which are very dynamic in spatial and temporal domain, are the most influential elements and obstacles in retrieving accurate surface reflectance. It is difficult to obtain aerosol and water vapor data that have suitable spatio-temporal scale for high- and medium-resolution multispectral imagery. Selection of atmospheric correction method should be based on the availability of appropriate aerosol and water vapor data. Most atmospheric correction of land imagery assumes the Lambertian surface, which is not the case for most natural surfaces. Further BRDF correction should be considered to remove or reduce the anisotropic effects caused by different sun and viewing angles. The atmospheric correction methods of optical imagery over land will be enhanced to meet the need of quantitative remote sensing. Further, imaging sensor system may include pertinent spectral bands that can help to extract atmospheric data simultaneously.
Accurate knowledge of land use/land cover (LULC) features and their relative changes over upon the time are essential for sustainable urban management. Urban sprawl growth has been always also a worldwide concern that needs to carefully monitor particularly in a developing country where unplanned building constriction has been expanding at a high rate. Recently, remotely sensed imageries with a very high spatial/spectral resolution and state of the art machine learning approaches sent the urban classification and growth monitoring to a higher level. In this research, we classified the Quickbird satellite imagery by object-based image analysis of Dempster-Shafer (OBIA-DS) for the years of 2002 and 2015 at Karbala-Iraq. The real LULC changes including, residential sprawl expansion, amongst these years, were identified via change detection procedure. In accordance with extracted features of LULC and detected trend of urban pattern, the future LULC dynamic was simulated by using land transformation model (LTM) in geospatial information system (GIS) platform. Both classification and prediction stages were successfully validated using ground control points (GCPs) through accuracy assessment metric of Kappa coefficient that indicated 0.87 and 0.91 for 2002 and 2015 classification as well as 0.79 for prediction part. Detail results revealed a substantial growth in building over fifteen years that mostly replaced by agriculture and orchard field. The prediction scenario of LULC sprawl development for 2030 revealed a substantial decline in green and agriculture land as well as an extensive increment in build-up area especially at the countryside of the city without following the residential pattern standard. The proposed method helps urban decision-makers to identify the detail temporal-spatial growth pattern of highly populated cities like Karbala. Additionally, the results of this study can be considered as a probable future map in order to design enough future social services and amenities for the local inhabitants.
The purpose of this study is to present a standardized scheme for providing agriculture-related information at various spatial resolutions of satellite images including Landsat + ETM, KOMPSAT-1 EOC, ASTER VNIR, and IKONOS panchromatic and multi-spectral images. The satellite images were interpreted especially for identifying agricultural areas, crop types, agricultural facilities and structures. The results were compared with the land cover/land use classification system suggested by National Geographic Information based on aerial photograph and Ministry of Environment based on satellite remote sensing data. As a result, high-resolution agricultural land cover map from IKONOS imageries was made out. The classification result by IKONOS image will be provided to KOMPSAT-2 project for agricultural application.
Fire fuel map is one of the most critical factors for planning and managing the fire hazard and risk. However, fuel mapping is extremely difficult because fuel properties vary at spatial scales, change depending on the seasonal situations and are affected by the surrounding environment. Remote sensing has potential to reduce the uncertainty in mapping fuels and offers the best approach for improving our abilities. Especially, Hyperspectral sensor have a great potential for mapping vegetation properties because of their high spectral resolution. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the potential of mapping fuel properties using Hyperion hyperspectral remote sensing data acquired in April, 2002. Fuel properties are divided into four broad categories: 1) fuel moisture, 2) fuel green live biomass, 3) fuel condition and 4) fuel types. Fuel moisture and fuel green biomass were assessed using canopy moisture, derived from the expression of liquid water in the reflectance spectrum of plants. Fuel condition was assessed using endmember fractions from spectral mixture analysis (SMA). Fuel types were classified by fuel models based on the results of SMA. Although Hyperion imagery included a lot of sensor noise and poor performance in liquid water band, the overall results showed that Hyperion imagery have good potential for wildfire fuel mapping.
In this paper, we introduce the SSResUNet network model, which integrates the SPADE structure with the U-Net network model for accurate land cover classification using high-resolution satellite imagery without requiring user intervention. The proposed network possesses the advantage of preserving the spatial characteristics inherent in satellite imagery, rendering it a robust classification model even in intricate environments. Experimental results, obtained through training on KOMPSAT-3A satellite images, exhibit superior performance compared to conventional U-Net and U-Net++ models, showcasing an average Intersection over Union (IoU) of 76.10 and a Dice coefficient of 86.22.
