  • Applying the criteria regularly used in sustainability assessment of "ordinary" buildings leads to the observation that tall buildings are "not sustainable." But nothing is ordinary about tall buildings and such an evaluation is not appropriate. While tall buildings may not measure up to the same sustainability standards applied to not-tall buildings, they do indeed have a significant sustainability impact if assessed within their appropriate context. This paper promotes the idea that in evaluating "sustainability" of tall buildings, we must look at their sustainability impact beyond their physical boundaries and within the urban context.

  • The Spiral, a supertall tower at the Hudson Yards Zoning District of NYC is an new iconic commercial office tower. The spiraling terraces throughout the height of the building creates unique outdoor spaces at each level for its occupants while introduces structural challenges unlike common office towers. Innovative structural solutions and an integrated connection design and steel detailing delivery process proved to be a key factor in the success of the project.

  • The 43 story, 178m tall Atlantis The Royal Resort and Residences tower nearing completion on the Palm in Dubai is a unique project in terms of its overall scale, geometry and form. The tower superstructure has a long narrow curved floor plan, measuring 400m in length above the podium with significant long span bridge structures forming voids and cantilevered blocks. This paper describes the innovative structural design solutions adopted and the construction solutions adopted by the Contractor to realize the Architectural vision.

  • The tall building and super tall building has been a common building type in China, with multiple functions and complex geometry. Composite construction is broadly used in tall building structures and constitutes the mixed structure together with concrete and steel constructions. The mixture of the constructions is purposely designed for specific area based on the analysis results to achieve the best cost-effectiveness. New types of composite construction are conceived of by engineers for columns and walls. Material distribution is more flexible and innovative in the structural level and member level. However the reliability of computer model analysis should be verified carefully. Further researches in the design and build of composite construction are necessary to ensure the success of its application. Composite or Mixture Index is suggested to be used as a performance benchmark.

  • Recently, construction work's tendency has become a high-rise building, a complexity and a large size. According to the KOSHA data, construction work accidents have not been decreased. Looking at from the side of accident accidents of construction industry are occupied over 1/3 among all industry accidents. Therefore, this study will analyze the accident of the building construction work from the data of KOSHA which were collected during 11 years$(1992\~2002)$ data relating to serious accidents of the building construction work suggest the counterplan according to the each work type in building construction work.

  • This paper summarizes the results of a two-year-long research project conducted by the CTBUH on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of tall building structural systems. The research project was made possible thanks to a $300,000 contribution from ArcelorMittal and the support of some of the most important structural engineering firms and players in the tall building industry. The research analyzed all life phases of a tall building's structural system: the extraction and production of its materials, transportation to the site, construction operations, final demolition of the building, and the end-of-life of the materials. The impact of the building structure during the operational phase (i.e., impact on daily energy consumption, maintenance, and suitability to changes) was also investigated, but no significant impacts were identified during this phase.

  • The emergence of tall buildings in the late $19^{th}$ century was possible by using new materials and separating the role of structures and that of non-structural walls from the traditional load-bearing walls that acted as both. The role of structures is more important in tall buildings than in any other building type due to the "premium for height". Among the walls freed from their structural roles, façades are of conspicuous importance as building identifiers, significant definers of building aesthetics, and environmental mediators. This paper studies dynamic interrelationship between the evolution of tall building structural systems and façade design, beginning from the early tall buildings of skeletal structures with primitive curtainwalls to the recent supertall buildings of various tubular and outrigger structures with more advanced contemporary curtainwalls.

  • Vertical meteorological conditions encountered by super tall buildings, such as wind speed, temperature and humidity, vary due to their height. Therefore, it is necessary to consider these environmental changes to properly estimate the heating and cooling loads, and to minimize the energy demands for HVAC in super tall buildings. This paper aims to analyze how vertical meteorological changes affect heating and cooling loads of super tall buildings by using numerical simulation. A radiosonde, which observes atmospheric parameters of upper air such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative humidity and pressure, was used to provide weather data for the building load simulation. A hypothetical super tall building was used for the simulation to provide quantified characteristics of the heating and cooling loads, comparing the lower, middle and upper parts of the building. The effect of weather data on the heating and cooling loads in super tall building was also discussed.

  • Sustainability is becoming more and more important in our everyday lives. Thus, it is apparent that more sustainable initiatives are incorporated in a building design concept to reduce operation costs and environmental impacts. However, will the construction cost go up if the building is going green - especially if it is a tall building? This is the question on everyone's mind. In the following paragraphs, we will look into a case study of a skyscraper in Nanning, China. That 411-metre skyscraper, Nanning China Resources Centre East Office Tower, is currently under construction. Designed to LEED-CS Gold standards, the building has adopted a number of sustainable design elements and operation practice, which indeed only accounts for a small percentage of the total construction cost.

  • An operation planning of lift car is crucial in tall building construction especially it's arrangement plans, because it is related with transportation distance of finishing materials affecting construction productivity. Since tall building construction, composed of complicating and huge plane have complex traffic lines of finishing materials, to determine the position of lift car empirically or intuitively has limits. Therefore this paper suggest an optimum layout model of lift car minimizing the transportation distance both at site-level and floor-level using Graph theory and Dijkstra algorithm.
